Diseases of the periodontium, the consequences and the possible therapy

When the periodontium gets sick

The periodontium is a delicate tissue. The technical term for him is "Parodont". When it becomes inflamed, the clinical picture of one arises periodontitis. The cause of the inflammation are bacteria that spread in the gap between the tooth and the surrounding tissue (gingival pocket) in the direction of the root tip.
First of all, almost nothing is noticeable. They only notice that the gums are bleeding more frequently. The reason for this is the inflammation.

What are the implications? What can be the result?

As the inflammation progresses, bones and periodontium slowly retract. Finally, the tooth root becomes visible, the tooth acts "long". As the disease progresses, the tooth becomes mobile. Chewing and biting off becomes heavier and can be painful. The position of the tooth can also change. If the disease progresses unhindered, it can eventually lead to tooth loss.

How can we help you?

First of all, the dentist must determine the extent of the disease. He measures the depth of the periodontal pocket. The distance in millimeters between the deepest point of the periodontal pocket and the edge of the gum is measured. The dentist determines if it is bleeding from the bag and makes an X-ray. In the picture he can estimate how much the bone has already gone down. The therapy of periodontal disease is to remove the bacterial plaque on the root surface and ensure that it does not re-emerge. With an ultrasound tip of the bacterial plaque – and thus the infection – removed. In repeated sessions (supporting periodontitis therapy) regular, renewed cleansing ensures that the success of treatment is permanent.

What comes to you??

If your dentist has diagnosed periodontitis with you, therapy will be performed. This removes the cause of the disease, the bacterial plaque, safely and permanently. At the beginning of the treatment is the diagnosis: a special periodontal examination and, if necessary, the preparation of an X-ray. The therapy begins with a professional tooth cleaning. The tartar, the coating and the discolorations on the tooth surfaces are removed. In addition, the daily routine of your individual dental care will be discussed and you will learn from our experienced dental assistants how and with which they can be optimized. The real one "active" Treatment consists of removing the bacterial plaque on the root surface in the gingival pocket. This is usually done under local anesthesia with an ultrasound tip and special hand instruments.

What can you do yourself?

After periodontitis treatment, you should have a very thorough oral hygiene and regularly have your teeth checked by the dentist. In some places, an infection may occur again, then act immediately and the bacterial plaque removed. For this to occur as rarely as possible, regular re-cleaning under the gum line is essential. All teeth are carefully removed from the floor and practiced the efficient oral hygiene. Your dentist will determine the necessary interval for your visit to the professional tooth cleaning according to the severity of your gum disease.
