Falk clinic

If you want to delve deeper into the cultural heritage of the Bedouins, you will quickly come across an interesting phenomenon: the Passion with which the Arabs have always dedicated themselves to falconry. The hawk is a hunting bird closely linked to the tradition of the desert people and still graces the coat of arms of the United Arab Emirates. What used to be important for survival is now available to some expensive (well-trained birds are worth up to 40,000 euros!) Hobby: Hawk, groom and hunt with their help.

Those who can afford it will keep some of the majestic birds and spend a lot of love, time and money to ensure the well-being of the falcons. But the hawks are usually more than a status symbol – rather, they will Appreciated as real family members. The following Fun Fact fits: Abu Dhabi’s airline Etihad also carries hawks in the aircraft cabin, while all other animals except guide dogs have to travel as cargo! :-)

A clinic for the proud heraldic animal of the UAE

No wonder there is in Abu Dhabi since 1999 a private hospital for the falcons gives? And yes, it’s the biggest in the world, of course, but you probably thought so, right? The Falcon Clinic, called “Falcon Hospital”, has been successfully managed by the German veterinarian Margit Müller for many years and produces more than 11,000 feathered patients per year.

The next please! Waiting room for falcons

What’s more, under the leadership of Ms. Müller, the clinic has opened up further services and today unites veterinary practice, animal board, animal shelter, falconry, research laboratory and event center.

One does not anticipate this diversity when one approaches the rather inconspicuous building, but as soon as the guidance begins, one knows that one has entered a completely different world. There are many here Hawk patients with the typical hoods on waiting bars.

Visit to the Falcon Clinic in Abu Dhabi: price and procedure

Also Tourists are welcome after prior registration at the Falcon Clinic. One is offered Guided visit in a small group (there were only four of us!), which during our visit in September 2013 included:

  • Tour of the outdoor enclosure
  • Observation of anesthesia and minor treatment on the falcon
  • Feeding a hawk
  • Access to a small museum room

Hawk manicure under anesthesia

The visit especially the hawk treatment was very interesting. The Claws were “manicured” and individual, broken feathers “repaired”. Incredible: The vets have a whole arsenal of different falcon feathers in their drawers so that they can perfectly restore ruined feathers …

Then everyone was allowed to own a hawk and there was opportunity for photos, before a tour participant was awarded the honor, to feed the animal. We had the normal tour booked without lunch (but there was a refreshment at the end) and without transport.

The Sightseeing can be booked daily (except Fridays) in fact either at 10 o’clock or at 14 o’clock. For The adult costs her AED 170 and for Children from 5 to 9 years AED 60. Younger children do not have to pay. You can book online, but keep in mind that yours at least 24 hours in advance have to do. With me, the payment via credit card did not work, I then contacted by mail and a very nice staff offered me to pay cash locally. Service is really capitalized there!

The hawk courageously makes the treatment over him

Unfortunately we arrived too late because we were trapped in a “hell taxi”. I had printed a map with directions and pointed out our date, but the taxi driver drove us to the gas station, where the queue was really long! Then he drove permanently under the speed limit (something I have never experienced!) He studiously ignored our instructions and paid attention to us unlike us, not on the signs. In any case He drove past the falcon clinic, though we both shouted, “Look, a sign! Turn right here! “

Somehow, he could not or did not want to turn more and we drove farther and farther away from our destination – despite the fact that we had lost enough time with the tank action. Instead of turning around, he finally stopped to ask a colleague for advice. He then called us to follow him and drove to our horror away from the tarred road across the desert sand …! Finally we arrived that way. But we were so stressed that we refused to pay the full taximeter price. I’m sorry today, but I was really pissed in this situation! :-(

Directions for a frictionless journey

That’s why I give you now a little directions with on the way, so you do not experience the same crap. Be sure to bring a map or cell phone with maps, so that you can track where you are right now, and if necessary, assist the taxi driver as you approach the destination. Although the Falcon Clinic is a unique tourist attraction, it is not visited as often as the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, which of course every taxi driver would find blindfolded. ;-)

Directions to Falkenhospital Abu Dhabi City from: The clinic is located near the airport. As you get closer to the goal, a few dive brown signs (typical signs indicating tourist attractions in Abu Dhabi!) on. Look out for it at the latest, if you on the Airport Road / Sweihan Road towards Falah City journey. After your Khalifa City A left hand have left behind, come right hand a gas station. If you have done this, it is not far and you should hold right. A last sign indicates that one to the falcon clinic from Sweihan Road turn right got to.

Here are a few pointers that might help the taxi driver: The hospital is located 3 km from Shawameikh Bridge, before the Al Shamka / Al Fahah exit!

The bird seems a bit reserved, do not you think? ;-)

If you are satisfied with your taxi driver, you can ask him to pick you up in two hours. Alternatively, you can of course call a new taxi. Will have joined us for the return trip to the city spontaneously with the other two tour participants. For a ride from the Corniche, the famous coastal boulevard in the city, to the hospital you have to expect a rough AED 75.

I think the Falcon Clinic is definitely on your own with the car well to find, If you keep your eyes open after the brown signs, do not drive too fast and keep to the right towards the end of the track. In any case, go on time, if you pass by and have to make a turning maneuver. ;-)

Your opinion?

And now tell me about your experiences: Did you find your way? Did you find the price for the entrance appropriate? What rating would you give the sightseeing tour? I am pleased about Kommetare!
