Although Odin is the ultimate when it comes to flashing ROMs on Samsung smartphones. Linux and Mac users, however, look into the tube. How to explain how the Heimdall tool works and provide downloads for the Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux versions.

Heimdall is the best Odin alternative for flashing ROMs on Samsung smartphones. But first and foremost: what is Odin’s about which I’m talking about right now? The Windows program “Odin” is Samsung’s own application for transferring mobile operating systems to the South Korean smartphones.

Heimdall: Regularly developed Flash tool

Samsung does not offer the program officially, it is leaked software. Which means that it is an unofficial version in which possible errors may not be resolved directly, as the latest version does not make its way out of the Samsung halls.

Heimdall is the name of the alternative, which regularly receives updates from its developer “Glass Echidna”. Here each platform is served. Even Mac users who own a Samsung smartphone can enjoy the convenience of custom ROMs. But it’s not quite as easy as Odin. Depending on the operating system you have to take different steps.

Flashing with Heimdall on Windows (Instructions & download)

Windows users among you have an easy way to go. First of all you have to install (of course) the latest Heimdall version, which you can find behind our download button. If not yet done by other programs, the environment Visual C ++ 2012 from Microsoft must be additionally installed. You can find these here for download.

Flashing with Heimdall on Windows: step-by-step

Note: This guide is for flashing ROMs that are not compatible with Heimdall. If you want to flash a compatible .tar.gz file, you can paste it under “Load Package” and just paste the PIT file into “Utilities”.

You may also need the Samsung USB drivers, which you can find in the Heimdall “Drivers” folder. Execute the “zadig.exe” and install it. Once that’s done, you just have to unzip the .zip file Heimdall is stuck with. This can be done at the location of your choice, for flashing the path is irrelevant. It continues step by step:

  • Start home-front-end by double-clicking on the file in the folder
  • Download the ROM you want to flash
  • Unzip them until you find the following files (maybe not all):

Flashing with Heimdall under Linux (instructions & download)

While under the Microsoft operating system, the frontend (a user-friendly interface) for Heimdall supports you and is included by default in the package, you need to install this under Linux additionally.

Supported Linux distributions:

  • Ubuntu
  • openSuse
  • Fedora
  • Debian
  • Arch Linux
  • Centose
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux

On this page you will find the installation files for the various Linux distributions as well as the frontend file, which we recommend for a simpler flashing with Heimdall. Download and install the “Heimdall” and “Heimdall Frontend” files. Did you do this, you can start Heimdall via the terminal with “sudo heimdall-frontend”. It continues step by step:

Heimdall: Flashing with Mac OS X (instructions & download)

Mac OS X users can also rely on Heimdall. Samsung smartphones can be flashing so synonymous with the Mac. For this you only need the installation file, which we have deposited for you as a download.

On the one hand, the installation implements the required drivers, on the other hand, it also installs the user-friendly graphics interface and the program itself.

Note: Since the installation is not officially done through the iTunes Store, you must agree to the execution of third-party setups.
