Hotel Bella Vista, South Tyrol

Skiing at the world champion!

Here families are welcome: Visiting Gustav Thöni in the dreamy mountain village Trafoi at the foot of the highest peak in South Tyrol! Our author Adrienne Friedlaender tells about a very special winter holiday with her boys …

“I’m as fast as the ski racer!” Exclaims Yuri with adventurous twinkles in his eyes. The gap between the felt speed of 140 and the actual of about 3 km / h, he bridged the gap with childish fantasy playfully. Ski instructor Jochen glides backward in snowploughs with outstretched arms in front of him down the slope to catch the racer in an emergency.
‘Bella Vista’ – The hotel is located in the small town of Trafoi, and lives up to its name in the panorama of the Ortler. And indeed, everything revolves around speed in the hotel at the foot of the Stelvio: it is the birthplace and home of former ski racer Gustav Thoeni. Here was the four-time ski world champion in 1951 on the world and in Trafoi also began his legendary sports career.
Who expects a large ski circus, is wrong in the small mountain village. Pistengaudi, après-ski, discos or huts magic you know here at best hearsay. In Trafoi it is tranquil, the place has only a small ski resort: Three lifts and a good handful of downhills. The ski area enchants with its fairytale snowy forest and the wintry silence. Snakes in front of the lifts do not exist here and during the day you can see the same faces again and again. No one lost here, which can be quite reassuring when traveling with a family with children. And if it does, no later than the Seppl at the T-bar lift knows where Filius stayed. “Look for Justus. Is not that the kloane fussy Bua mit’m Hölm? It’s just a few minutes away. “At lunchtime, everyone meets for Kaiserschmarren or a cup of hot liver dumpling soup in the Furkelhütte – the only farm on the mountain.

Already in 1875, the Ortler family laid the foundation stone for the pension at the foot of the highest peak in South Tyrol, and even then the travelers returned in stagecoaches for a rest in the “Gasthof zur schönen Aussicht”.
Around 100 years later, Gustav Thöni invested the fortune gained through his sporting achievements into the expansion of his parents‘ pension. A gallery full of trophies, medals and photos, the first hand-carved skis and an old racing suit tell the life story and the history of the ski world champion. In addition to the soulful and careful renovation, the traditional hotel now lives above all through the hospitality of the Thöni family. Ingrid Thöni, wife of ski legend and daughter Petra lead the operation with a lot of heart and helpfulness. The two are the soul of the hotel and certainly the reason that it attracts many regulars every year in the “Bella Vista”.

In the afternoon, one guest after the other comes in the hotel. In the hall a warming log fire crackles for the frozen skiers. A couple of kids eat homemade apple strudel with vanilla sauce and play Mau Mau. The adults read, retire to their rooms for a quick nap or spend the afternoon in the sauna. At 6 pm there will be dinner for the children and naturallemente tres corsi per Bambini – three courses for the children. Finally we are in Italy: Pasta, Carne, Dolci. After the children‘s menu, Yuri disappears with Natalie, who looks after the guests’ children in the afternoon and evening at the “Bärenclub” until the adults have eaten. In front of the fireplace we enjoy stuffed dumplings with truffle sauce, a souffled young pork steak with gorgonzola crust and pot souffle on plum sauce.
With his newly developed transfer technology, the racing driver revolutionized the driving style of his time and achieved new record speeds. But Gustav Thöni has mastered the transition to family life with flying colors. Thöni, who was the personal coach of Alberto Tomba from 1989 to 1996 and was also responsible for the Italian national ski team for many years, trains only his grandchildren today.

With red cheeks and gleaming eyes, Juri sits on the front of Gustav’s sled and, together with the ski expert, dashes down the torchlit ski slope. Once a week Gustav organizes the popular “night tobogganing” for the guest children. And the next morning, the adults are sitting with red cheeks at the breakfast table: skiing with Gustav is on the program. As spirited as the likeable South Tyrolean has conquered the hearts of his fans in the ’79s, he and a group of his followers are waving elegantly as ever down the slopes. Who does not dream of waving down the slopes in the lee of the world champion? In the guest race at the end of the holidays, Juris will win all children of the ski kindergarten – his first silver medal. Within a week he has managed to double his speed from 3 to 6 km / h. No world championship yet, but as history shows, miracles are possible in Trafoi.
