Mediterranean cruises, shore excursions and cruises from cruise planning

Mediterranean cruises

Mediterranean cruises are the cruise destination from a German point of view. Only Northern Europe comes up. No wonder, because the journey is short and the Mediterranean offers warmth and sunshine almost all year round. The big asset of the destination is its versatility. Sunshine and dream beaches can be enjoyed on a Mediterranean cruise as well as exciting cities and the oldest history. The classic is a circuit in the western Mediterranean with stops, e.g. in Barcelona, Marseille, Rome, Naples, Palermo, Palma de Mallorca or a voyage to the eastern Mediterranean (for example from Venice) to the Greek islands, to Athens, Dubrovnik and Istanbul or even to Israel or Egypt. In addition, there are cruises with a trip to the Black Sea. In winter, combined Mediterranean and Canary cruises are very popular.

The journey to the ship

A big advantage of Mediterranean cruises is the short journey. All major ports in the Mediterranean can be reached from Germany in one to two hours by air. Many tourists even travel by car or opt for an organized bus arrival of the shipping company. The latter is e.g. offered by the two Italian market leaders Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises.

The main ports of departure in the region are Barcelona, Venice, Genoa, Civitavecchia (Rome) and Savona. Savona? About 40 kilometers west of Genoa lying town is the home port of the cruise ships of Costa Crociere and therefore, of course, heavily frequented. But you can start a Mediterranean cruise today in various launch ports. The shipping companies have become much more flexible in this regard. German shipping companies also like to use the port of Palma de Mallorca.

The best travel time

Mediterranean cruises are offered throughout the year. Every season has its advantages. A boat trip in winter and spring is ideal for people who want to see something and just want to soak up some sun. Nature is much farther than ours and sightseeing is more enjoyable when it is not so hot. And there is a lot to see in the Mediterranean! In the summer months is of course high season. It is holiday time and many families with children are on the way. From about mid-May you can swim in the sea and dream beaches are truly enough. Autumn is also an interesting travel time. It is not so warm anymore, but you can swim in the sea until the end of October. For many people, autumn is the best time to travel.

The shipping companies in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean is one of the most important and popular cruise destinations ever. The shipping companies in the Mediterranean are therefore numerous. By far the most Mediterranean cruises have the two Italian giants Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises in the program. These two Italian shipping companies have the largest fleets in Europe and are also extremely popular in this country. We Germans obviously like the international ambience with delicious Italian food and lots of zest for life. But Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises also offer a very good price / quality ratio that convinces many people. Families with children benefit from very reasonable child prices. In the parents‘ cabin, children often travel for free! Language skills are not needed with the Italians.

From a German point of view, of course, the German market leaders AIDA Cruises and TUI Cruises are mentioned. Here the audience is purely German-speaking. Both are more expensive than their Italian competitors, but the travel price includes a little more. In recent years, the major American shipping companies have become ever stronger.
