11 special Christmas markets in Munich 2019

11 places in Munich where you can watch fireworks on New Year’s Eve

"Let go for a mulled wine" – As soon as WhatsApp groups are opened for this plan, you can be sure where you are going anyway: either at the Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz or on Tollwood. Sure, the former is one of the largest Christmas markets in Germany, but nevertheless or precisely because of that, it is also terribly crowded. It is very similar with the Tollwood. That is why we have selected eleven Christmas markets in Munich for you that are particularly beautiful (and hopefully not so well attended). From the vegan sausage stand at the fairy tale bazaar to the warming fire bowls during the winter magic in the West Park.

1. Nostalgia in circus tents at the fairy tale bazaar

Wonderful news for the Christmas season: the fairy tale bazaar has found a new home in the creative quarter on Leonrodplatz! This year, too, there is dancing, feasting and strolling between artists, artists and colorful circus tents. Stroll through fairground buildings, feel like in a fairytale world and let yourself be pampered with culinary delights. From veggie doner kebabs to falafel with hummus and the world’s best cheese spaetzle to classics like bratwurst and mulled wine, the fairytale bazaar has everything in stock. Every day there is live music from Munich and all over the world in the beautiful tents with fairy lights and candlelight and free children’s programs from puppet shows to fairy tales.

2. Wild shows at the gay and lesbian Christmas market Pink Christmas

There is a pink Christmas market that is somehow different and super centrally located in the Glockenbach. For the fifteenth time the Pink Christmas gay and lesbian Christmas market is taking place on Stephansplatz, right next to the listed Old South Cemetery. You only walk five minutes from Sendlinger Tor. In addition to delicious mulled wine, small stands and good food, there are also colorful live shows in the evening, on which DJs, travesty artists or musicians perform. Originally created out of the queer community, Pink Christmas has now become a focal point for neighbors and all Munich residents in a Christmas mood. New this year: there is a Prosecco bar, which not only serves for a good mood, but also for a good cause!

3. Fire bowls and artist-yurt during the winter magic in the Westpark

The beautiful Café Gans am Wasser in Westpark is open again this Christmas! Since 2016, the team has been proving that the sweet Bauwagen kiosk beer garden directly on the banks of the Mollsee is not only good in summer: there is hot mulled wine on warm fire bowls, vegan crepes, a cozy stable tent with wooden floors, carpets , Sofas and heating – plus a varied program on the small stage. In addition to a colorful children’s program, the Winter Magic also offers exciting sustainable workshops. Hot tip for the Christmas gift search: There is also a small craft market in a yurt with handicraft companies and artists from the neighborhood and the surrounding area!

4. Romantic mood on the Ha >

For some the most beautiful, but certainly one of the smallest Christmas markets in Munich: The Haidhauser Christmas market on Weißenburger Platz. This small market has been shining fairly romantically in the Christmas season for over 40 years, only a handful of stalls gather around the beautiful fountain near the Ostbahnhof. Here you will not only be provided with culinary excellence – in addition to Christmas baubles, Christmas decorations and hand-carved all sorts, there are also scarves, soap and other small gifts to buy. And in the evening a band plays almost every day. What more does ma need? Nothing, exactly.

Weißenburger Platz | Weißenburger Platz, 81667 Munich | 26.11. until Dec 24, 2019 | Monday – Thursday: 11 a.m. – 8.30 p.m., Friday – Sunday: 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. | Christmas Eve: 10 am–2pm | More info

5. Special atmosphere at the Christmas market in Blutenburg Castle

Short but powerful – this motto applies to the Christmas market in the courtyard of Blutenburg Castle, which takes place over only four days. Despite the tight schedule, the Christkindlmarkt not only shines with its special location, but also with a great program: music, Christmas stories, art, lighthouse festival, Advent singing. If you still need a Christmas tree, you will certainly find a great little dance at the in-house sale. Either way, the trip to Obermenzing is worth it. If you don’t have enough, you’ll be on the Neuhauser Christmas market in good hands at Rotkreuzplatz – open from November 28th to December 23rd, 2019.

Blutenburg Castle | Sedlweg 15, 81247 Munich | 05.12. – 08.12.2019 | Thursday and Friday: 1 pm to 8 pm, Saturday and Sunday: 11 am to 8 pm | More info

6. Mulled wine in the magic forest on the Alte Utting

Yeah, this year the Starfleet is again mooring on the city’s most beautiful cutter at Christmas time! From November 23 to December 23, Alte Utting will be converted into a cozy Christmas harbor above Sendling. All sorts of delicacies are on offer: drink Feuerzangenbowle on deck, mulled wine under fairy lights in the magical forest and gobble up goodies from one of the various food stalls. There is also a lot going on in terms of programming – there is a varied music program and art in heated tents every day. If you are still looking for extraordinary gifts, you can also get handicrafts from all over the world here. Once there, we would say everything in it. And that in a most beautiful, maritime atmosphere!

Alte Utting | Lagerhausstrasse 5, 81371 Munich | 23.11. – 23.12.2019 | Monday to Wednesday: 4:00 pm to 12:00 am, Thursday: 4:00 pm to 1:00 am, Friday: 3:00 pm to 2:00 am, Saturday: 10:00 am to 2:00 am, Sunday: 10:00 am to 10:00 pm | More info

7. Glassblowers and cream stains at the Christmas village in the Kaiserhof der Res >

The Christmas market in the Kaiserhof is one of the largest Christmas markets in Munich – and yet, because of its location in the beautiful inner courtyard of the residence, it looks totally cozy. Surrounded by facades, it almost reminds a little of the fairy tale bazaar, but the program is completely the opposite, because tradition is very important here. Rustic farmhouses, craftsmen – from glassblowers to goldsmiths – show their craft live on site. You can eat hearty tarte flambées and crispy cream stains.

Christmas village in the imperial court of the residence Residenzstrasse 1, 80333 Munich | 11/21 – 12/22/2019 | Daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on November 24. closed, on December 22nd: 11 am–8pm | More info

8. DIY and music at the Untergiesinger Advent market

Untergiesing is getting cooler – you can see that from the fact that the small Christmas market on Hans-Mielich-Platz is taking place for the third time this year! On the first weekend in December you can order sausages and waffles from Untergiesinger Advent, drink mulled wine and buy roasted almonds – in the middle of the district. There is also a raffle, stands with homemade (children’s) things and live music. The sweet Christmas market organized by a parent initiative is a real insider tip!

Untergiesinger Advent | Hans-Mielich-Platz, 81543 Munich | 29.11. – 01.12.2019 | Friday: 3pm to 8pm, Saturday: 11am to 8pm, Sunday: 11am to 6pm | More info

9. Celebrate the pre-Christmas period atypical with the Hofglühing on the Eisbach

The courtyard in the Bavarian National Museum is always pretty. We imagine it even more beautiful, however, full of fairy lights and live music. This does not have to be a reverie this year, because for five weeks the inner courtyard turns into an atypical Christmas market! With open air bars and food stands, straw lounges, shipping containers, swings and light installations, it sounds more like a festival than a Christmas market. There are also live music, hot and cold drinks, film evenings, winter games and a load of art! We are more than excited and look forward to celebrating Christmas on the Eisbach this year.

Hofglow | In the courtyard of the Bavarian National Museum Prinzregentenstrasse 3, 80538 Munich | 28.11. – 31.12.2019 | Always Thursday to Sunday Thursday and Friday: 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday and Sunday: 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. | More info

10. Romantic mood and Christmas wind music at the Chinese tower

Where Bavarian beer garden culture is held high in the summer months, there is one of Munich’s most romantic Christmas markets in Advent. The Christmas market in the middle of the English Garden at the Chinese Tower is certainly no longer an insider tip, but it is simply very nice. Every evening it is demonstrated here with Christmas brass music that Christmas hats can do more than last Christmas in a loop. Stroll along the lovingly designed houses, take a round on the historic wooden carousel, measure yourself in ice stock sport and browse the craftsmanship of traditional manufactories!

Chinese tower | Englischer Garten 3, 80538 Munich | 28.11. – 23.12.2019 | Monday to Friday: 12.00–8.30pm, Saturday and Sunday: 11.00–20.30pm | More info

11. Soul food and DJs at the Lucky Who Nachtkindlmarkt

If you are bored of traditional Christmas markets, you should stop by the Lucky Who night-time market! For the second time this year, a Christmas market is opening in the inner courtyard at Briennerstraße 14, which makes everything a little different. Instead of Christmas poodles, the Local Heroes of the Lucky Who will be available from Tuesday to Saturday from 5 p.m. And instead of an infinite number of stalls with Krims Krams, there are a few beautifully designed market houses with homemade soul food and delicious drinks. The ideal spot to warm yourself up with organic rosé mulled wine – it is even refined with goji berries and honey. The Nachtkindlmarkt is the only Christmas market in Munich without a curfew, so you can dance here until late at night!

Night Child Market | Lucky Who | Briennerstrasse 14, 80333 Munich | 11/21 – 12/21/2019 | Tuesday to Saturday from 5 p.m., Open End | More info
