After a lot of research and calculations, we decided to visit Christ the Redeemer by ourselves, without guided tours. We figured that the cheapest option apart from hiking was to take the train. This monument is quite impressive, it was inaugurated in 1931 and it is 38 meters high. It is a symbol of the peace and happiness of the carioca (people born in Rio) people.
Fun fact – Among the constructors of the head of the statue, was Gheorghe Leonida, a Romanian sculptor.
We booked tickets online the night before the visit and it proved to be very helpful. Therefore, we recommend booking online for a smooth process and less waiting in lines. More about how to get there below.
How we got there from Favela Cantagalo
We went to the General Osorio metro station, traveled for 6-7 stops to Largo do Machado station. Then, we changed to the 580 bus that left us at the Corcovado train station. It was terribly hot outside, about 37 degrees Celsius so we were boiling.
Tip: make sure you have plenty or carry some cash to buy some on the way or at the top.
A little about the Corcovado Train
The Corcovado train was built in 1884. It goes through the world’s largest urban forest, the National Park of Tijuca. Improvements have been made, such as switching from steam-engine to fully electrical in 1910. Most improvements have been done in order to protect the forest.
The train ride is about 20 minutes long and goes up to the top of the 710 meters tall mountain. Once you get to the top, you only need to go up some steps to reach the statue. There are also elevators and escalators for the ones unable to use the stairs.
