Santo Domingo's highlights include the colonial old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest city in the New World. The Columbus Monument and the Columbus Palace commemorate the great explorer.

The city is rich in history from the past, ruins of palaces and fortresses can be found everywhere. The almost completely preserved Ozama Fortress is a popular sightseeing destination for tourists. The museal offer in the capital also does not leave much to be desired.

To mention are here u.a. The Palace of Fine Arts, the Larimar Museum and the Museum of Anthropology. Avenida George Washingten is the name of the Caribbean beach promenade in Santo Domingo, which runs directly along the sea.

Beach vacationers enjoy the dreamlike ambience at Playa Boca Chica, the most famous beach close to the city. In the middle of the city is the Los Tres Ojos Cave Lake Park, an idyllic place where vacationers forget that city life is pulsating all around them.

Beautiful beaches can be found on the coast of the province of Puerto Plata, which stretches over 100 kilometers. Beach vacationers stay at the golden Playa Dorada or in Sosúa, Cabarete is an Eldorado for surfers.

In addition to the extensive bathing pleasures and the large offer of water sports, both the province and the city of the same name, Puerto Plata, have numerous important sights.

This includes the San Felipe Fortress, the TaIno Museum dedicated to the indigenous people, the Amber Museum, Victorian buildings, the first Columbus settlement La Isabela, the temple and the local mountain Pico Isabel de Torres with the statue of Christ and a fascinating botanical garden.

The peninsula of Samana

To the northeast is the peaked Samana Peninsula, which is one of the most scenic destinations in the Dominican Republic.

The capital of the island is called Santa Barbara de Samana and is the cultural and economic center.

You will not find big hotel chains and spacious hotel complexes on the island, because here eco- and individual tourism determine the picture. Almost pristine white beaches with Robinson Crusoe feeling attract visitors to the popular resort of Las Terrenas.

Samana Bay is known for the impressive rendezvous that humpback whales have there from December to March. Peninsula restaurants offer a variety from around the world.

The beautiful landscapes offer opportunities for hiking or exciting exploration and safaris. The absolute highlight is the Los Haitises National Park, a natural paradise with dense mangrove forests and a gigantic flora and fauna.
