5 tips for zeeland, a weekend by the sea in domburg

5 Tips for Zeeland | A weekend in Holland

advertising | For a weekend by the sea … we have often dreamed about this in recent months. From the west of North Rhine-Westphalia, we are after about two and a half hours by car at the sea. In Zeeland, a province in the southwestern Netherlands with numerous islands and peninsulas. Our weekend tour takes us to Domburg. In summer, tourist life pulsates here, both in the village and on the beach, which in 2015 was voted the most beautiful in the Netherlands.

Now in November, it is much emptier, but the small 1,500-inhabitant town of Domburg is still a great place for a weekend break. And our tips for your next trip to Domburg are of course independent of seasons – okay, luck with the weather will never hurt!

Breakfast in the beer en Mel Salon

As always on our travels we do without hotel breakfast in Domburg (15 € per person in Aparthotel Bommelje). Around the Weststraat there is a good selection of small cafes that are perfect for having breakfast or a delicious piece of cake in the afternoon. The Bier en Melk Salon offers a fine selection of five different breakfast dishes. The menu also includes delicious toasts, sandwiches and smoothies. All plates, cups, dishes and deco are also available for purchase in the Bier en Melk Salon.

Breakfast in the gallery Pop

The combination of a cozy café and a small shop is also available in the Galerie Pop. Fairtrade and organic are very important here. The delicious Chocomel z. B. is made of organic chocolate and wonderful herb instead of usual sweet. On Sunday morning we enjoy a delicious breakfast with ham, cheese, hard-boiled egg, croissant, rolls (unfortunately only baked) and of course chocolate sprinkles. They must not be missing from any Dutch breakfast.

In the evening De Visbar is one of the most popular restaurant addresses in Domburg. Mackerel tapenade with bread, king crab or sole … we all tasted delicious here. Also the market Zes is a nice address for a dinner.

Beach walk in Nieuw Burgh Haamstede

Zeeland is characterized by bridges that connect the many small islands and peninsulas. A sunny late autumn day is perfect for a long beach walk. We explore the surrounding area by car and head to Nieuw Burgh Haamstede.

Granted, we were looking for a beautiful lighthouse in the middle of the dunes. The Google Image Search has helped us and so we stood in front of the diagonal red and white striped lighthouse and have made us on a tour through the dunes to the beach. In November, it is wonderfully lonely, the beaches are almost deserted despite the sunshine. All the better that “De Strandloper” was still open and we were able to warm up a little bit with a large pot of pea soup.

Great on the beach you can of course also in Domburg itself. Just walk to the beach and then right and left in the dunes and as far as your feet wear. Just beautiful!

Sunset at the sea

A sunset on the beach is simply part of every trip to the sea. Even though the late autumn demands thick jackets during the day, the light in the sunset compensates for all cold and fresh breezes. Up in the dunes or directly down the beach between the fishermen, the spectacle is the most beautiful to watch. Incidentally, a great spot for sunset is also the lighthouse in Westkapelle. On the way from Domburg to Westkapelle you can leave the road after a few meters in the direction of the dike. The ride on the wide dike in the sunset is a real experience. After a few minutes you reach the lighthouse of Westkapelle in the evening sun.

Alfa Romeo Giulia

The easiest way to reach the Dutch North Sea is by car. On our weekend trip we extensively tested the Alfa Romeo Giulia. A sporty sedan, which is almost too wild for Dutch speed restrictions with its 180 hp. But even on rural roads or on the dike, we felt comfortable with her all around. Not infrequently car friends waved us in the town – Giulia makes just impression!

Whether for driver or passenger: The practical center console with Navi can be great to use the large thumbwheel. The seats are sporty but comfortable. In terms of comfort would definitely like to go much further than just to Zeeland. The tank would have been enough for any case: Overall, we have had for the approximately 750 km at the end almost 50 euros in fuel costs – and in the tank was still a lot in it.

A few words to CARO

We have received our car in the branch in Dusseldorf. Apparently a bit confused when booking, because the staff expected us only for Saturday. The car was briefly looked at together, defects were found no, signatures were quickly done and off we went. The Alfa Romeo Giulia was in top condition and came back as new. This is one of the principles at CARO: rental vehicles are a maximum of seven months old. We could park our own car on site in the parking garage – very convenient!

CARO is available throughout Germany at around 40 full-service locations. The collection is also possible at many other small service offices. The booking of a vehicle runs online very clearly transparent to us. Via practical checklists incl. Prices, you can simply add or deselect desired insurance packages, excess, additional driver or similar.

Returns are usually not possible on Sundays, but if there is an emergency number, as we have requested. (Additional costs for a return outside business hours: 40 euros). One hour before the return we have announced by phone. The basic rental was completely problem-free. Reliably the local staff a bit more friendliness and a smile on the face would have been good. Incidentally, parking costs for the own vehicle do not arise on site in Düsseldorf.

For 2017 we have decided to visit the Netherlands in spring and summer. What are your tips and recommendations for Domburg and Zeeland?

We were supported on our trip by the CARO car rental with the Alfa Romeo Giulia. Of course, our own opinion remains untouched as always.
