9 tips on electric sonic toothbrushes

If you follow these 9 tips, get the maximum out of your electric sonic toothbrush and protect your teeth and gums.

Although sonic toothbrushes are still significantly more expensive than conventional electric toothbrushes, prices have fallen in recent years. The cheapest models, such as the Braun Oral-B Pulsonic Slim, are not only affordable with around 50 euros, but also convince by a great price-performance ratio. However, there is a lot to be considered in the application, because the use of a sonic toothbrush differs more or less clearly from a manual toothbrush or a conventional electric toothbrush. In order to achieve the best possible result while protecting your teeth and gums, you should pay attention to the following 9 tips.

  1. A blob of toothpaste is usually enough. Even and especially with sonic toothbrushes, less is more. In the toothpaste advertising you can always see a great 2-3 centimeters long strip on the brush head, but this is not necessary. Rather, the manufacturers want to boost consumption and thus their own sales.
  2. Spread the toothpaste in the mouth before switching on the toothbrush. In order for the toothpaste to reach all the places in the mouth, you should roughly distribute them in the 4 quadrants with the brush and then switch on the toothbrush. Once the sonic toothbrush is in operation, it is more difficult to evenly distribute the toothpaste.
  3. Always switch on in the mouth first. Anyone who has turned on an electric toothbrush with toothpaste on it before knows why this point is important. Otherwise there is a lot of fun.
  4. Better clean carefully. Especially at the beginning you should very carefully brush with a sonic toothbrush and if you are unsure, the cleaning time may first reduce to 1 minute. The very intense vibrations can be irritating to beginners, but make sure that the toothbrush does most of the work itself. Scrubbing is not necessary here!
  5. Less pressure is more. If you brush with little pressure, this is not only gentler on the gums, the cleaning result can be even better. Because the less pressure is applied, the better the toothpaste-saliva mixture can flow into the interdental spaces and clean them.
  6. A plan is always better than chaotic cleaning. Get used to a fixed process when cleaning. For example, start at the top right outside and brush the row of teeth on the outside to the top left. Then below, then inside, then the chewing surfaces.
  7. Also with sound the principle applies “from red to white”. Always brush from the gum to the tooth, for example, in a gentle circular motion. This is how the teeth are cleaned, the gums are massaged and also the gingival margin is cleared of bacteria.
  8. Achieve the optimum cleaning time. Try brushing from tooth to tooth and devoting around 3-4 seconds to each tooth. Overall, the cleaning time should be at least 2 minutes, but not longer than 3 minutes.
  9. Do not save at the wrong end. The brush head of an electric sonic toothbrush should be replaced every 3 months. Similar to manual toothbrushes, first of all, the performance decreases and, secondly, bacteria often accumulate on the old brushes.
