Dental insurance for children (without waiting time): Top 10 tariffs in comparison & test

In many cases, taking out private dental insurance can also make sense for children in order to protect themselves from the high costs that arise in particular with orthodontic treatments. Almost every second child in Germany needs orthodontic therapy to correct tooth or jaw misalignments. However, the statutory health insurance only pays for severe to extreme malpositions and in this case also pays a maximum of 80% of the costs. In addition, many dental supplement insurance take on far more extensive dental care measures than the statutory health insurance. Some premium tariffs meanwhile even waive the usual waiting time after the contract is signed.

What should a good tariff for children (without waiting time) include??

In contrast to adults, a tariff for children should be able to demonstrate strong performance, especially in the areas of orthodontics and dental care. In particular with orthodontic treatments, high costs can arise, which should be borne to a high degree (80 to 100 percent) by an additional dental insurance.

In the event of serious malpositions (KIG 3 to 5), the health insurance company pays up to 80%. Care should be taken to ensure that the additional costs for higher quality therapies, such as ceramic brackets or invisible braces, are covered by the dental insurance. The health insurance does not pay for minor tooth misalignments (KIG 1 and 2). Good private dental supplement insurance for children, on the other hand, bears the treatment costs here too.

In addition, dental care measures play an important role in childhood. A good tariff includes, for example, the takeover of professional teeth cleaning and the fissure sealing of the molars in its scope of services.

The following table shows the costs of orthodontic treatment according to orthodontic indication groups (KIG levels) of a legally insured child and with private dental supplement insurance (UKV ZahnPrivat Premium, 90 percent reimbursement, maximum reimbursement 3600 euros).

Table 2: Costs of orthodontic treatment with and without dental supplement insurance (ZZV)

KIG level (specification) Expected costs Own contribution of the GKV insured Own contribution with ZZV
1 (very easy) € 5000 € 5000 € 1400
2 (easy) € 5000 € 5000 € 1400
3 (medium) 2500 – 7500 € 500 – 1500 € € 50-150
4 (strong) 5000 – 10000 € 1000 – 2000 € € 100-200
5 (extreme) € 7500 – 12500 1500 – 2500 € € 150-250

The expected costs shown represent average costs and can also be higher or lower depending on the regional location and the chosen treatment method.

What are the advantages of a tariff without waiting time?

After taking out dental insurance, many tariffs initially provide for a waiting period of up to 8 months, during which no costs for upcoming dental treatments are covered. The only exception to this are usually accident-related tooth damage. A tariff without a waiting period, on the other hand, pays from the first day and should be selected if treatment is already in sight (but not yet advised).

What are the limits of a tariff for children (without waiting time)?

Just like dental insurance for adults, tariffs for children limit the benefits in the first few years. Here, the highest possible sum limits should be observed in the first 4 to 5 years. The total amount of services for orthodontic services is often limited. A good tariff should provide at least 3000 euros for minor malpositions (KIG 1 and 2) and 1500 euros for severe malpositions (KIG 3 to 5). Of course, optimal performance is unlimited (e.g. Signal-Iduna ZahnTop). Prophylaxis services are often limited separately. Therefore, care should be taken to ensure adequate reimbursement for the professional dental cleaning advised every six months.

When is the best time to take out dental insurance for children??

It is advisable to think about taking out additional dental insurance for a child from the age of 2 to 3 years when the milk teeth have fully developed. On the one hand, the insured child can then benefit from many useful dental care services. On the other hand, early insurance is particularly important because it is no longer possible to take out a treatment that has already been advised or has started. This already applies if only individual teeth are under observation due to an incorrect position.
