Dental supplementary insurance for root canal treatment: Top 10 tariffs in comparison & test

Caries and invading bacteria can ignite the tooth pulp of a tooth. Then root canal treatment is often necessary. Otherwise there is a risk of severe pain and even loss of the tooth. It is a very complex and expensive dental treatment. However, the costs of a root canal treatment are only covered by the health insurance under certain circumstances. In difficult cases, the health insurance usually only pays when the root canal treatment is necessary to save a previously closed row of teeth or an intact denture. In addition, the full costs are not always borne by the health insurance. Since the cost of a root canal treatment can well amount to over 1000 euros, a private dental supplementary insurance is helpful for the financing.

What exactly is “root canal treatment”?

Root canal treatment is used to preserve a tooth when its pulp, the so-called pulp, is inflamed or dead. The causes are often carious infections and bacteria that penetrate into the dental pulp and ignite purulent inflammation. This can cause the tooth to die.

In the case of a root canal treatment, the root canal is first opened, cleaned and infected or dead tissue is filed and removed. Finally, the root canal is filled with a special filling material and sealed.

Root canal treatment and an overview of the alternatives

With acute inflammation, there are not many alternatives to root canal treatment. In principle, tooth extraction is also a therapy option and is in some cases the only solution paid for by the health insurance company, but the loss of a natural tooth should be avoided as far as possible. Only when tooth preservation is no longer possible will tooth removal become unavoidable. In addition, it should be borne in mind that the costs of subsequent dentures (e.g. dental implant) exceed that of a root canal treatment. The following figure compares a root canal treatment with the alternative tooth removal and restoration with a dental implant, with regard to the characteristics for the characteristics durability, aesthetics, costs, fixed subsidy from the statutory health insurance (GKV), the deductible without dental supplement insurance (SB without ZZV) and the excess with Dental supplementary insurance (SB with ZZV).

Table 2: Comparison – root canal treatment and the alternatives

characteristic root canal treatment tooth extraction dental implant
durability Success can vary Tooth gaps can result in consequential damage to the teeth and bones With good care very good (up to 20 years)
aesthetics Of course, tooth usually looks like before Unsatisfactory Very good results
costs 450 – 1000 € € 80-250 1400 – 3000 €
Fixed grant GKV € 280 – € 650 * € 80-250 € 336 – € 437 *
SB without ZZV approx. 0 – 400 € 0 € 1100 – 3000 €
SB with ZZV 0 € 0 € 0 – 300 €

The GKV fixed-cost subsidy shown in the table depends on the documentation of preventive examinations in the years before the treatment measure (bonus booklet). The range of costs shown for the individual treatments results from regionally different price structures as well as from the different degrees of severity and the associated different billing rates.
