The root canal treatment method is one of the dental treatment measures. What exactly is “root canal treatment”?
Root canal treatment is used to preserve a tooth when its pulp, the so-called pulp, is inflamed or dead. The causes are often carious infections and bacteria that penetrate into the dental pulp and ignite purulent inflammation. This can cause the tooth to die.
In the case of a root canal treatment, the root canal is first opened, cleaned and infected or dead tissue is filed and removed. Finally, the root canal is filled with a special filling material and sealed.
Root canal treatment and an overview of the alternatives
With acute inflammation, there are not many alternatives to root canal treatment. In principle, tooth extraction is also a therapy option and is in some cases the only solution paid for by the health insurance company, but the loss of a natural tooth should be avoided as far as possible. Only when tooth preservation is no longer possible will tooth removal become unavoidable. In addition, it should be borne in mind that the costs of subsequent dentures (e.g. dental implant) exceed that of a root canal treatment. The GKV fixed-cost subsidy shown in the table depends on the documentation of preventive examinations in the years before the treatment measure (bonus booklet).
