Which services are excluded?
In all cases, treatments that have already been advised or started are excluded from the insurance benefit. With regard to orthodontic treatments in particular, early closure should therefore be ensured.
What should a good tariff for children include??
In general, when choosing dental insurance for a child, the focus should be different from when you were an adult. While dentures play a minor role in childhood, the areas of orthodontics and dental care are becoming increasingly important.
Almost every second child in Germany needs orthodontic treatment to correct tooth or jaw misalignments. However, the health insurance only pays up to 80% of the treatment costs for regular care in the event of pronounced malpositions. In the case of minor deformities, it does not perform at all. Dental supplementary insurance, on the other hand, offers far more extensive protection and should also cover the additional costs of higher-quality treatment alternatives, such as ceramic brackets or invisible braces. It is important to ensure that the insurance provides both minor malpositions (KIG 1 and 2) and pronounced malpositions (KIG 3 to 5) regardless of the health insurance company. Good tariffs reimburse 80 to 100% of the remaining costs that the health insurance does not cover.
In addition to orthodontics, the range of services of a premium tariff should also include dental preventive measures, such as six-monthly professional tooth cleaning and fissure sealing of the molars. This helps prevent tooth damage in childhood. But dental treatments, such as fillings, should also be covered by the dental supplement insurance, because the statutory health insurance usually only pays the price of an amalgam filling, while private dental supplement insurance also covers the costs of higher-quality materials such as plastic.
The following table shows the costs of orthodontic treatment according to orthodontic indication groups (KIG levels) of a legally insured child without dental supplement insurance (ZZV) on the one hand and on the other hand with a private dental supplement insurance (Bayern ZahnPrivat Premium insurance chamber, 90% reimbursement, max. 3600 €) are explained.
KIG (version) | Expected costs | own contribution | Own contribution with ZZV |
---|---|---|---|
1 (very easy) | € 5000 | € 5000 | € 1400 |
2 (easy) | € 5000 | € 5000 | € 1400 |
3 (medium) | 2500 – 7500 € | 500 – 1500 € | € 50-150 |
4 (strong) | 5000 – 10000 € | 1000 – 2000 € | € 100-200 |
5 (extreme) | € 7500 – 12500 | 1500 – 2500 € | € 150-250 |
As shown in Table 2 above, the GKV does not support classification into KIG 1-2. Thus, parents who have not taken out additional dental insurance for their children and their children’s teeth have a very slight to slight misalignment of the teeth often have to make a difficult decision: make a high financial contribution or the children with it "blemish" let grow up.
What are the limits of insurance for children??
As with the adult tariffs, dental insurance policies for children limit their benefits in the first 4 to 5 years after completion. Here, the highest possible reimbursement limits of at least 3000 to 4000 euros should be observed in the first 4 years.
However, it is not uncommon for the services for orthodontic treatments to be limited. At least 3000 euros in benefits for minor malpositions (KIG 1 and 2) and 1500 euros for serious malpositions (KIG 3 to 5) are desirable. Tariffs that do not provide a service limit in the area of orthodontics are usually accompanied by lower total limits (e.g. Signal-Iduna ZahnTop, max. 2000 euros in the first 4 years).
In addition, some providers provide an age limit for orthodontic services. At best, these should be avoided or should be after the age of 21.
The following table shows the performance and total limits of the UKV ZahnPRIVAT Premium tariff.
calendar year | total limit | orthodontics | teeth cleaning |
---|---|---|---|
1 year | € 900 | Max. 3600 € (entire term) | € 108 |
1.-2. year | € 2,700 | Max. 3600 € (entire term) | € 108 |
1st-3rd year | € 5,400 | Max. 3600 € (entire term) | € 108 |
1st-4th year | € 8100 | Max. 3600 € (entire term) | € 108 |
from 5th year | unlimited | Max. 3600 € (entire term) | € 108 |
With the tariff Insurance Chamber Bavaria ZahnPRIVAT Premium, 3600 euros are available for the entire term of the contract for classification in KIG 1-2 and 3600 euros for classification in KIG 3-5. In addition to the high reimbursement rate of 90 percent and this rather high maximum reimbursement, all of the credit points examined by us are covered. This includes:
- Refund for orthodontic functional analysis
- Refund for Invisalign therapy (invisible braces)
- Refund for lingual technique (internal braces)
- Refund for mini brackets
- Reimbursement for plastic brackets
- Reimbursement for retainer (tooth stabilizer)
- Refund for colorless sheets
In addition to child benefits, orthodontic treatments for adults that become necessary after an accident are also covered.
When should an optimal dental insurance for children be taken out??
It is often recommended to take out additional dental insurance for children as early as the age of 3 when the baby teeth have completely developed. As a result, the insured child benefits in the long term from numerous dental preventive measures, such as sealing the fissures of the back and front molars. However, early conclusion is particularly important because the insurance no longer pays for treatments that have already been advised or started. A single tooth under observation due to a malposition is sufficient for this. In this case, the parents must pay the treatment costs themselves.
Can a tariff for adult children continue?
In some cases, it is possible to continue dental insurance for children beyond the age of 21. However, this is generally not recommended, since insurance with good orthodontic services is usually comparatively expensive. Instead, a tariff should be chosen that offers good performance in the areas of dentures and dental treatment, as these areas become more important with increasing age.
