Children at the dentist

The regular visit to the dentist as a positive experience

From when children should visit the dentist regularly, it is not possible to determine a general rate. There are different recommendations from dentists, with the age of around three years often being used as a guideline. Regular visits to the dentist ensure, on the one hand, that the development of the teeth is monitored, and on the other hand, parents have the opportunity to obtain comprehensive information from the dentist about the development of the teeth, the correct oral care of the child, sensible aspects of nutrition and other things.

The fact that children are mostly curious and can be enthusiastic about new experiences can be used: Children who are introduced to their new dental visits in a playful and child-friendly manner do not experience any uncomfortable or fearful feelings. Small children can also be taken by parents or older siblings to check-ups to familiarize themselves with the environment in which the practice is carried out.

A child who knows that dentists keep teeth healthy has an easier time visiting them. Unfortunately, some parents still transmit their own dental fears to the children. Exaggerated promises in the child’s head mean that something bad must follow.

With sentences like: "It does not hurt", "You do not have to be scared" and "it’s not that bad", you subconsciously convey the opposite to children. Terms like "Pull the drill, syringe, tooth" inspire children’s imagination (negative). How about "Remove rumble brush, small peaks and loose tooth"? Parents should never threaten the dentist, even if their teeth are not brushed or if they eat too many sweets. It is unfavorable if treatment has to be carried out the first time you visit the dentist.

Positive experiences with the dentist from an early age increase the chance that the patient will see dentist appointments regularly and without shyness throughout his life.

There are different offers and approaches in dental practices to make the treatment positive for the child, for example: play corners in the waiting room, the child-specific assignment of subject-specific expressions, playful handling of the practice equipment or practice devices (e.g. the child with the Let the chair move up and down), a specially designed children’s treatment room, …)
