Children take a sniff to prepare for the time after kindergarten at class

A bridge to school

Northeim. Many kindergarten children can hardly wait to start school. In reality, most school beginners find it difficult to transition from kindergarten to school.

Because new classmates, teachers, rooms and a strictly organized morning are waiting for the outgoing kindergarten children. "Driving a bus is a challenge," notes educator Heike Thiele from the municipal kindergarten in Hammenstedt. This transition is made easy for Justin and Luca: together with their day care centers Ostpreussenstrasse and Hammenstedt as well three other Northeim kindergartens are part of the "Bridge Year" project, which was started three years ago by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Education.

The aim is to build a bridge between kindergarten and school for the boys and girls. The idea was triggered by the PISA debate. “The need was recognized to support all children before starting school so that they can continue their individual learning process in primary school without a break can“Says primary school teacher Martina Vollbrecht-Materne.

She is part of the Northeim district advisory team that coordinates and supports the project in the region. There are 50 teams across Lower Saxony.

Three model projects are currently running in Northeim and the surrounding area: First, the Martin Luther School is working with the day care centers Ostpreussenstrasse, Hammenstedt, St. Sixti I and II and St. Marien. On the other hand, there are two agreements between schools and kindergartens in the Northeim district.

The whole thing is implemented by the kindergarten children of the oldest year sniffing as much school air as possible and gaining practical experience. In the year of the bridge, they attend the partner school, work in the learning workshop, take breaks and school parties.

"We even took part in the lessons ourselves," reports Justin proudly. Just like Thiel for her daycare, one of the other teachers is responsible for the implementation and accompanies the children on school trips.

The “Bridge Year” project ends in August 2011. "Until then, we will work out a concept that will provide organizational and content-related suggestions for them collaboration of primary schools and daycare centers, ”says Vollbrecht-Materne.

Ideally, the system would have established itself in such a way that kindergartens and schools would work together in the future without outside support and build the important bridge between two stages of life.

Taken away from fear

"By visiting the Martin Luther School, we were able to relieve the children of many fears," says educator Beate Bley from the Kita Ostpreussenstrasse Justin, Luca and the other school candidates well prepared for the first class in the school, which is no longer completely unknown.
