you might wonder why i – who many people associate with nature, trees and pilgrims – am now coming around the corner with an article about driving a car. but honestly, as nice as hiking and pilgrimage is, sometimes it has to go a little faster and such a car is a really fancy invention. Maybe you are also one of those women who often drives hundreds of kilometers in the car, whether for private or professional reasons. Maybe you’re in a long-distance relationship, work away from your family, or travel a lot for your job in sales or as a project manager. Or you just don’t work that close to home and spend a few hours in the car every day.
You have of course the possibility to say: "it annoys me every day anew", but you can’t change it. You like everything else and driving is only a means to an end. The question is, what can you do to not find the trips stupid??
I am very often on the road on the autobahn and have now found a way to enjoy the time.
Let me tell you about a key situation:
I am employed as a project manager at a logistics company. We are in the middle of starting a new business and so I was at work many days in a row 12 – 14 hours and always under power. there was no break, no moment to take a breath. Even going to the toilet is delayed until it is not possible anymore. And then there is a date in hamburg on the plan. I am in prague at the time by the way. I had booked a flight long in advance, but from stuttgart, where I live nearby. Since there is no time for the return trip to stuttgart to catch the plane, i get back in the car and drive the 700 km to hamburg. After only a few kilometers I realize the luxury I suddenly find myself in. I have it nice and warm (it’s winter), pleasant music is playing on the radio, I have food with me and finally, for once, SILENCE. No phone, no colleagues who need help, no work assignments. I can just be for myself, think, feel inside myself. I have time to reflect, to look into the future, what will await me in hamburg, I can listen to my needs and do a check-in in my neglected body. From that moment on, I start to enjoy driving as a wellness time.
The following are recommendations to sweeten your car rides only under the following conditions:
- You have many years of driving experience and you are safe on the road!
- You are alone in the car.
- The traffic situation is little or. Monotonously demanding.
If these points are given, now come the possibilities you have while driving to make the time perfect for you.
Your 12 tips for YOUR time on the highway
- Prepare for the trip and pack some food. Equip yourself with a mug of to go coffee or tea. Have some nuts ready, fruit and whatever else you like. Always have enough to drink!
- Turn up the heat the way you like it. Let’s face it, where else can we women really live out our urge for warmth, if not alone in the car??
- Put on the music you like. Enjoy the sounds, sing along, "dance" along. Have fun!
- Get inspiration in the form of interviews, podcasts, audiobooks on your ears. Oh, how many times I had to stop in the last months, no not because I had to go to the toilet again, but because I had so many ideas in my head that I just had to write down.
- Make phone calls, to friends, family, people you rarely call because you know the calls will take longer. This, of course, only with headset or hands-free device!
- Do breathing exercises and muscle tensing exercises. watch your breath – how your belly rises when you inhale. When you exhale you can tense your belly, press your back into the seat. Be creative here!
- Enjoy the peace and quiet when you feel like it!
- Observe nature or other road users in a targeted manner.
- Listen to the sounds. It’s insanely beautiful to listen to the raindrops as they patter on the car.
- Discover beautiful things on the side of the road.
- Make a check-in with yourself. Feel inside your body. How it feels?
- Watch your thoughts. What keeps you busy? Why does this bother you?
You see, the possibilities are manifold! Every car ride is what you make of it! Try one or the other and you will look forward to your next longer drive and maybe, like me last week, miss the departure because you have arrived all at once and don’t want to be yet – because it is so beautiful in your wellness oasis CAR.
My call to you: use every car ride for yourself. Enjoy the precious time as your wellness time! Make the most of every ride!
