Activities with children in Kassel

(Last update on February 15, 2019) Are you looking for things to do with children? There are many options in Kassel, regardless of the weather. Here we collect a few ideas for you and present you a small selection.

Activities with children in good weather

When the weather is good, it is of course above all outdoor activities that many are looking for. Regardless of whether it is sunny or cloudy – if it is dry, there are numerous things to do in Kassel.

Kassel climbing forest

How about, for example, a visit to the climbing forest in Kassel (see map)? In good weather, a trip is definitely worth it. The climbing forest is also not just for children. The courses in different heights and difficulties are an adventure for the whole family. There is an easier course for smaller children, where the children can test their body control and skill. The older ones can dare to tackle the routes at dizzying heights. Children from the age of twelve are allowed to climb alone, which requires a declaration of consent from the parents.

Prerequisite for the climbing forest: The weather should already be dry and stable, otherwise it can quickly become slippery. More information can be found here.

Opening hours: You can read the current opening times here. The winter break usually ends in mid-April.

Karlsaue

The large park near the center of Kassel (see map) offers many leisure options. When the weather is nice you can go for a walk, play frisbee, or simply enjoy nature. Although this is not an insider tip, it is certainly something for all those who live in the city and do not have much time for long trips. You can find out more about the Karlsaue here.

Requirement: Rather nice weather, although it can of course also be very nice in the Karlsaue in winter.

Opening hours: open all year

Shipping across the Fulda

Unfortunately, this offer was discontinued in April 2018. But maybe there is an organization again that wants to offer something like that. Celebrations are currently only possible on the steamers at the landing stage.

Zoo at Rammelsberg

A visit to the zoo is one of the classics of the popular excursion tips. If the children are even smaller, the Rammelsberg Zoo (see map) is perfect. There they come in close contact with the animals. In addition to goats and donkeys, there are also various owls, storks, flamingos and even tufted marmosets, as well as giant snakes and other animals.

Requirement: Nice weather, fun with animals

Opening hours: Closed for winter break in December and January. You can find current times here.

Activities with children in bad weather

Even in bad weather, museums, shops or sporting events in Kassel offer opportunities to do something with children. Here are some examples:

Natural History Museum Ottoneum

The Natural History Museum at Steinweg 2 (see map) in Kassel probably offers the perfect balance between experience and playful learning. In workshops during the holidays and regular series of events, children have the opportunity to discover nature for themselves. Here you can also live out your creativity. More information can be found here.

There are also so-called “Children’s Time” demonstrations in the planetarium especially for children. You can find the current program here.

In the city museum (see map), visitors can learn everything about the more than 1100-year history of Kassel. The changing special exhibitions in the city museum are perfect for activities with children. There are also regular museum educational offers for young people. A rainy day does not have to fall into the water on this excursion. The city museum offers a total of 700 exhibits. So it should take a while until they were all visited. Further information is available here.

This means that you climb without a rope, since you only climb to the jump height. In children as well as adults, it improves the feeling of movement, as well as strength and body tension. The center also offers birthday parties for children. You’ll find more about it here.

Requirements: Climbing fun

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10.30 p.m., Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Ice rink in Kassel

The Kassel Huskies play in the Kassel ice rink. You can find the current schedule here. For whom that is nothing: If the huskies do not play, the hall is released for ice skating. There is an ice disco at the weekend. Activities with children are particularly popular there because beginners can use walking aids to support them during the first attempts. Since the opening times vary, it is best to look here before you visit.

Turn laps on the go-kart track

Children can feel like a racing driver on the go-kart track – and finally the professionals started out small. Special children’s karts are available in the hall.

Requirement: Children from the age of 6, who are at least 1.25 meters tall, can drive on the Kasseler Kartbahn. Children under the age of 14 need a Junior license. To do this, they have to attend a two-hour course in which they learn flag signals and behavior on the route.

Opening hours: The current opening times can be found on the Kartbahn website.

Activities with children: Kinderebafe Mausebär

In the children’s café Mausebär, parents can relax with a piece of cake while their children play. Slippers or socks should be brought. You can play in the game house, ball pit or on the slide. All dishes are also child-friendly, and there is also no ready-made meals.

Requirement: Rather for smaller children
