Adventure vacation with children in Germany – Franconia

Chrissi invited me to the FP Family Camp Franconia to experience a day of adventure vacation and camp feeling with children.

Where is the Franken family camp??

Getting to the Franken family camp is very easy. The family camp is located on the campsite in Hohenstadt directly on the river Pegnitz and is located about 40 km east of Nuremberg in Hersbruck Switzerland.

The popular holiday region in Germany is also called Frankenalb or Hersbrucker Alb.

The FP family camp at the Hohenstadt campsite

I park my car in front of the campsite in Hohenstadt Pegnitz, take my backpack and go into the driveway. It’s half past seven, the sun is slowly rising over the trees and the only thing you can hear are the songbirds chirping cheerfully. I was supposed to meet with Johanna and Christopher, the two camp leaders, at three-quarter to eight. There is still time, so I walk to the campsite and look around. Everyone seems to be still asleep, the Hohenstadt Pegnitz campsite is well attended but no one is very wide. The license plates of the cars tell me that holidaymakers come from a wide variety of German states, but holidaymakers from neighboring European countries are also represented.

I’m looking for the yurt tent that Chrissi from FP Sportreisen gave me as a meeting point, but I don’t find it straight away, so I walk across the campsite pretty haphazardly. Ah, there are two big yurts on the left, they have to be. I go inside and see a man and a woman preparing breakfast. Hi, I’m Oli, are you Johanna and Christopher? No, the two are not there yet, but you are definitely the blogger to come today, I got an answer. The two introduced themselves and offered me coffee while they continued to prepare breakfast for the camp participants.

Then a tall, well-trained young guy with an impressive full beard came into the yurt tent. Hi, I’m Christopher, he introduced himself and started to help the other two with the breakfast preparations. Johanna appeared shortly afterwards, still looking tired and sleepy and also helping immediately. The yurt tent was now filling up and around me there were children of different ages everywhere, from 7 to maybe about 14 years and their parents were slowly arriving for breakfast.

Breakfast together in the family camp

Why do you write blog? Can you make a living I was asked by a man. Apparently, there is a belief that bloggers can make a living from writing. Very few can do that and for me it’s just a hobby. I explained why I write blog (blog = internet diary) and how it came about. I only write blogs when I am fine, when I feel creative and when I enjoy it and when there is something to tell, I explained. That’s why it may well be that there is nothing new to read on my FrankenLandler blog for a few weeks, I gave him to understand. Christopher invited me to grab the breakfast buffet and we sat down at one of the tables. The first palpation then took place during the breakfast together.

A wasp got lost in the tent and flew around Christopher’s head, who tried to get rid of it with hectic hand movements – not good. Regardless, shortly afterwards the wasp was gone again. A boy from Luxembourg sat down at our table and asked: You are a blogger. What is the most successful article you have written? I replied a family hike to Moritzberg. And how many people have read that? I think so 7600 people, I can not tell you exactly. Anyway, the expression on his face showed me that he was interested in it. We should both meet again later in the day. Now I wanted to find out from Christopher how it works here in the FP family camp. I could not imagine anything below that. I had questions after questions.

The first insights into the FP family camp Franconia

I wanted to know a lot about him, because I have absolutely no experience with family vacations and children in a group:

  • Who is going on vacation here at the FP family camp?? It is very different: there are families, patchwork families, mothers with their children, fathers with their children, so classic single child variants. The prerequisite for the family camp is that there are children between the ages of 6 and 16.
  • What interests do vacationers have?? They all have one thing in common, they are enthusiastic about the outdoors, connected to nature and want to spend adventure holidays as a family and with children. They are looking for calculated thrills and family adventures. They want to be active and above all not to be alone.
  • How big is the group? The group is a maximum of 30 people.
  • What about the food?? We have practically a deluxe camping with full board. The holidaymakers are provided with the food, we make suggestions for a meal plan with the recipes, but what there is for eating is regulated by the group. There is a kitchen and catering service and the children help their parents. We as the camp manager of the FP family camp get the food and give suggestions and support. The group organizes itself.
  • Are there any rules in the camp?? Of course, groups don’t work without rules. In general, the campsite rules with cleanliness and quiet apply from 10 p.m. In our activities, which have something to do with thrills and adventure, our requests must be followed, also in the interests of our own safety.
  • What adventures are they on the program?? The FP family camp in Franconia includes canoeing on the Pegnitz, caving, climbing and via ferrata on the Höhenglückssteig. Today we go climbing on the white rock and then you can climb the Höhenglücksteig on your own responsibility. For all who want this and dare to do it.

Now Christopher made the announcement, at 10:00 a.m. departure, carpooling, take food, drinks and your climbing equipment with you and please take enough drinks with you, it will be warm today. Johanna had already provided me with climbing equipment and asked if I already had climbing experience. I said no, I’ve never been climbing before. For me too there should be thrills and adventures.

The trip to the climbing adventure – Höhenglückssteig

I asked Johanna to look for a way to take a car in a car and so I went with an Upper Bavarian. Upper Bavaria go on an adventure holiday in the Nuremberg region? How does that happen? That interested me, because normally Upper Bavaria is more drawn to the southern climes and the Alps. The answer I got was: single child trip. You wanted to spend adventure vacation as a single with a child and not alone. In addition, she wanted to be active and in a group with her child, she just came across the FP Family Camp Franconia on the Internet. The whole concept sounds more and more exciting to me, it is far from the mainstream and the holiday offers of large tour operators.

In the meantime we drove through Eschenbach and passed the signs for the Goldener Engel inn of the Lehr family. I told her that I used to have a typical Franconian morning drink at the Eschenbacher Kirchweih. The Gasthof Goldener Engel in Eschenbach is owned by the parents of a friend of mine who now lives in Munich and where you can find good and typical Franconian home cooking. My little gastro tip on the edge. We drove on to Fischbrunn and Hegendorf and finally arrived at the hiking car park.
