Aldi changes chocolate cream recipe – and gets worse for it

Aldi changes chocolate cream recipe – and gets in trouble

The Aldi Nord nut nougat cream has been popular with many people – and not only because it’s cheaper than Nutella. “Nusskati” was an insider tip, because unlike most other chocolate creams it contained no palm oil. Aldi has changed that quietly.

Even if somehow everyone knows that Nutella & Co. is not a healthy breakfast, we love German chocolate nut creams. In addition to the high sugar and fat content, however, chocolate cream still has a problem: Almost all products contain palm oil.

Palm oil is included in almost every second supermarket product, because the vegetable fat is versatile and cheap. However, the cultivation of oil palms is extremely harmful to the environment and the climate: it takes place largely in Southeast Asia, where valuable rainforests are cut down for the plantations.

Palm oil in chocolate cream

Fortunately, because this problem is becoming more and more known, many people are trying to do without palm oil. For a long time, the Aldi Nord chocolate cream “Nusskati” was regarded as a good alternative to Nutella, because unlike the popular branded product it was free of palm oil. Relevant Internet portals led the chocolate spread therefore so far in lists of palm-free products.

But now Aldi Nord has apparently changed the recipe. Aldi has not communicated this change – that has taken over an Aldi customer, Merkur.de writes. According to the newspaper, the angry customer posted a (now deleted) photo on Facebook, on which the current and the new ingredient list of “Nusskati” can be seen – and clearly shows that where previously stood Sheafett now palm oil is called.

The oil is second to the list of ingredients, sugar and hazelnuts. Incidentally, the recipe is almost identical to that of Nutella. The palm oil used by Aldi Nord is RSPO certified and thus more sustainable than conventional palm oil – however, there are sharp criticisms of this seal as well.

Better alternatives to Nutcats, Nutella & Co.

For those who want to do without palm oil, Aldi Nord’s Nougat cream is no longer an option. Currently there are some branches still the old version without palm oil to buy, but these are only remaining stock. In any case, there have also been better alternatives to Nutella: There are also chocolate creams that – unlike the Aldi product – contain local sunflower oil instead of palm oil, are organic certified, fairly traded and / or vegan.

You will find a selection here: High score: chocolate spread without palm oil.

Alternatively, you can also try, Make chocolate spread yourself.

Not healthy, but popular: chocolate spread for breakfast. Chocolate spread without palm oil is the more sustainable alternative …
