Alice: Madness Returns

Game description:
Who does not know the story Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Alice chases a white rabbit, falls into its rabbit hole and lands in the incredible wonderland. A land of fabulous creatures and fantastic places. This topic alone provides enough material for numerous adaptations such as the, sometimes more or less, child-friendly films by Disney and / or Tim Burton. But Alice, the Wonderland and the figures living in it can also be interpreted differently. In 2000, American McGee’s Alice created a computer game in which Wonderland was portrayed as a dark horror world of bizarre and dangerous creatures. The adolescent Alice is the inmate of a lunatic asylum plagued by traumatic visions since her family died in a fire. She flees again and again into her imagination, from which her inner turmoil, however, has made a cruelly alienated place. "Alice: Madness Returns" is the successor and as the name implies, madness and bizarre places and figures are also the focus here. With the nice wonderland that many of the cartoon know, this wonderland has nothing in common. In the role of Alice, the player must overcome tricky jumps, defeat opponents, unlock new costumes and weapons, and defend themselves with brute force against the enemies who seem to have sprung from the fever dream of a mad Alice.

Educational Assessment:
Alice madness
The story of the game ties directly to its predecessor (which was included as download content for the first edition of the game). The grown-up Alice lives in the fictional reality in an orphanage in London. Again and again Alice gets into Wonderland, where her virtual reality and the fiction of her delusions mix. Alice must save the wonderland and thus her state of mind, and with each completed chapter finds truths about the death of her family in the form of memories. Wonderland stands for her shattered mental health, in which she has to defend herself against the shadows of her self-reproaches in order to find the necessary memories. Although all the well-known characters such as the Queen of Hearts, the Hatter or the Cheshire cat come before, but all are monstrous modifications of themselves. In a later chapter, Alice is even in a madhouse again. The player controls Alice, who, with her head shaved and straitjacket, makes her way through the other insane inmates.

bloodlust
Generally it is noticeable that "Alice: Madness Returns" very brutal, bloody and scary. Alice gradually releases weapons such as the Vorpalblinge, the hobbyhorse or the pepper mill and has to use them skillfully to defeat their enemies. In addition, it can trigger hysteria in moments of greatest need. In this particular mode, she is much stronger, while the world around her is bathed in black and white except for the red blood. Their appearance also changes due to bleeding eyes. The opponents are very disturbing and range from skeletal card creatures with long bony fingers to living puppets without eyes. For many of these opponents, a tactic is needed to successfully master the often difficult fights. However, there are also different difficulty levels from which the player can choose at the beginning.

passion for collecting
There is a lot to discover within Wonderland. So-called Radula spaces include tasks such as solving a puzzle or defeating all opponents. If Alice has mastered four such rooms, her life advertisement gets an additional rose. It is also necessary to collect as many memories in Wonderland as possible to complete the story of Alice’s past as possible. As soon as Alice has picked up a memory, it is reproduced acoustically in German, the fragments of remembrance often coming across as very bizarre and as very unpleasant wisdoms. Porky snouts are hidden everywhere in the different levels and reveal secret treasures like memories or teeth after firing. These teeth are also left by defeated opponents and represent the currency, with the Alice, however, only the weapons can improve.

Small caves and breezy heights
"Alice: Madness Returns" Take the players to the most bizarre places in Wonderland. So Alice explores the “hatcher’s domain”, the “Queenland” or the “dollhouse”. In all these places there are different ways to move forward. Alice can, as in the children‘s book, make herself small and run through keyholes or jump from one platform to another during jump passages. The hopping passages in particular require a practiced handling of the control, since these jumps often have to be executed with pinpoint accuracy.

Conclusion:
In addition to the monstrous alienation of the characters and locations, the brutal fighting and the sometimes difficult control of jump passages, it is above all the background story that can have a disturbing effect on younger players. "Alice: Madness Returns" is a horror game that has little in common with the children‘s book, but is an adult and abstract interpretation or retelling of the story. Precisely for this reason and because of the portrayals of violence and blood and the eerie ambience that seems to have sprung from a horror cabinet, it is only playable without reservations for 16-year-olds. We therefore recommend it especially for young people who have less affinity for horror elements from 18 years.
