August, 2014

Archive for the month: August 2014

After our DNA-Test Family-Finder from FTDNA identified our first half-sibling pair last year in August, there is now a hit between two half-sisters, both of whom were born in the University of Giessen over 30 years ago.

And so it came to this: After Mia had learned at the end of last year from her generation and previously could not get any information about the donor from the clinic, she happened to learn of a person who had been conceived a few months before her also in the University of Giessen. Following a gut feeling, she contacted her and both registered with the Family Finder. Last week, they were notified that they were actually directly related!

Perhaps this little story can encourage other donor children to register with FTDNA. The more you participate, the greater the chance of further hits! For this you do not need to be a member of our association or have even contacted us – the participation in the test at FTDNA is sufficient.

Donor child is founding member of Donor Offspring Europe (DOE)!

Since today the website of Donor Offspring Europe (DOE) is online! DOE is an umbrella organization of donor child organizations from Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands and donor children from Denmark, UK and Switzerland.

The abbreviation DOE is based on the idea that in English-speaking countries a “John” or a “Jane Doe” is a person of unknown origin. Above all, DOE is intended as a platform to share information, but also to advocate our goals, such as knowing our descent at a European level. Last but not least, we hope that we can help to create donor child organizations in other countries as well.

On the website, the individual associations provide information on the situation in their countries from the point of view of donor children, but over the next few months there will be additional information on current events in our countries as well as European law.

Kenya gets donor registry

With artificial insemination, one might not immediately think of Kenya – nevertheless it is done there and the Kenyan parliament is currently discussing a bill for the regulation of artificial insemination. The In Vitro Fertilization Bill 2014 is primarily intended to protect people who are caused by artificial insemination, the same rights we should have children who are generated by sexual intercourse. It is intended to protect the children thus conceived, in particular from an incestuous relationship.

The law provides for the creation of an agency that will keep a register of births resulting from such treatments and the associated biological fathers. At the age of 18, anyone requesting information from this authority may ask if information is in the register of the applicant. The applicant must be advised of the possible consequences of the information before providing information. Minors can only be informed if they are in need of medical care.

However, the law makes no statements about how often a sperm donor can donate and how many children he is allowed to father.

We are pleased that another country has decided to regulate the field of artificial insemination legally and to speak out against anonymous donations. It is long overdue that the German legislator is also dedicated to these issues and does not continue to leave the unresolved questions to doctors and courts.
