Baby and child hood impromtu

Ohhhhh, I’m excited !! A few days ago I showed you J’s new hood, the hood called Impromtu, which I knitted according to French instructions and then immediately cut open and knitted again.

And since the hood is really very nice and easy and to knit quickly, I asked Solenn Couix-Loarer, the creator of the knitting pattern, if I could translate the instructions into German. And here it is now .. for you. the instructions of this great hood! At this point, a big thank you to my sister-in-law, who not only proofread the translation, but also knitted a sample! But really now, the instructions!!

Baby and child hood Impromtu

Wool: 30 – 35 – 40 grams of Ecological Wool by Gwenola K.
Stitch sample: 15 sts x 22 rows make 10 x 10 cm
Needle size: 5 mm; 4.5 mm for the cuff

Sizes: 3-6 months, 9-18 months, 18-36 months.

There are two options, to knit the hood:
1. Round knitted with double pointed needles
2. Knit flat on two needles, at the end this hood is sewn together.

Variant 1: Knitted round with double pointed needles

Stop: 52 (60 – 64) sts
Knit 8 (10 – 12) R in double ribs (2 sts right, 2 sts) with double pointed needles size 4.5 mm. This corresponds to approximately 3.5 (4 – 4.5) cm.

Now change to the larger needle, 5 mm thick. When the sizes 3-6 months and 18-36 months work in the following row knit 2 sts. Number of stitches: 54 (60 – 66). Continue knitting to the total height of 11 (12 – 13) cm (including cuffs). Work to the right until the end.

1st decrease row: (knit 2 sts together, knit 7 (8 – 9) sts) x 6, number of stitches: 48 (54 – 60) sts.
Knit 1 row.
2nd decrease row: (knit 2 sts together, knit 6 (7 – 8) sts) x 6, number of stitches: 42 (48 – 54) sts.
Knit 1 row.
3rd decrease row: (knit 2 sts together, knit 5 (6 – 7) sts) x 6, number of stitches: 36 (42 – 48) sts.
Knit 1 row.

Now decrease in every row: continue to decrease the number of right sts by one st each – this creates the spiral pattern – until 6 sts remain. Either knit another 1 or 2 rows (this creates a small tip) or immediately pull the thread through the 6 sts, knot and sew the threads.

Voilà – the hood is ready!

Variant 2: Knitted flat on two needles (with seam)

Stop: 56 (62 – 68) sts
Knit 8 (10 – 12) R in double ribs (2 sts right, 2 sts) with 4.5 mm needles. This corresponds to approximately 3.5 (4 – 4.5) cm.

Now change to the larger needles, 5 mm thick. Continue 1 row on the right, 1 row on the left alternately up to a total height of 11 (12 – 13) cm (including cuffs). End with a back row.

1st decrease row: K 1, knit 2, K 7 (8 – 9) sts) x 6, K 1, number of stitches: 50 (56 – 62) sts.
Knit 1 row.
2nd decrease row: K 1, knit 2, K 6 (7-8) sts) x 6, K 1, number of stitches: 44 (50 – 56) sts.
Knit 1 row.
3rd decrease row: K 1, knit 2, K 5 (6-7) sts x 6, K 1, number of stitches: 38 (44 – 50) sts.
Knit 1 row.

Now decrease in every row: continue to decrease the number of sts between the decreases by one st each – this creates the spiral pattern – until 6 sts remain. Either knit 1 row, 1 row (this creates a small corner) or immediately pull the thread through the 6 sts, knot and sew the threads.

Close the seam.

Voilà – the hood is ready!

I didn’t knit the hood with the original wool but with the bingo wool from Lana Grossa, because the stitch test and needle size fit very well, but I knitted with 5.5 needles because I don’t have 5. For the largest size, which is still big enough for my boy, I pretty much needed a ball, i.e. 50 grams.

Incidentally, impromtu means something improvised and unexpected. Solenn named this hood because one evening she had to knit a hood for her son very quickly because his was lost and the next day he urgently needed one.

Here you will find Solenn’s knitting patterns for a long time – she offers some really pretty patterns, some of which are free!

Hach, I am so happy that I can provide you with the instructions for the cool hood here in German and would of course be happy about feedback and links to / photos of your knitted Impromtus! Merci et bon weekend!
