Baby mattress types compared

There are many different materials from which cot mattresses are made, we illuminate the best known and introduce the advantages and disadvantages.

Latex mattress as a children’s bed mattress

Latex mattress as a children’s mattress

A latex mattress is made synthetically from isoprene, which is obtained from petroleum, or from the milk sap of tropical rubber trees, which can be produced in a significantly more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly manner. Latex mattresses usually consist of a combination of isoprene and rubber and are mainly offered as premium latex. The higher the rubber content, the more expensive the baby mattress and the better the lying properties.
Pure latex mattresses have an optimal body adaptation and do not sag, as is often the case with other materials. In addition, no moisture is drawn into the mattress core by leaking diapers or spit.

  • High point elasticity
  • Adapts to individual body shapes
  • Good resilience and suspension behavior
  • Very hygienic and easy to care for
  • Ideal for allergic and sensitive babies and toddlers
  • Insulating and regulating moisture
  • Weighs significantly more than, for example, a foam baby mattress
  • Either too soft or too little ventilation and low moisture transport
  • Slight smell of your own that should evaporate after a few weeks

Cold foam mattress for the baby bed

The core of a cold foam mattress is made of a foamed plastic, which is usually made of polyurethane. This material is non-toxic and is particularly characterized by its good tolerance for allergy sufferers.
The foaming is carried out by means of air and low temperatures, so that health-endangering propellant gas or CFCs are not used. They are offered in a wide variety of designs. For example, a large number of air channels can be selected, which ensure good air permeability and do not make babies sweat quickly. The open-pore structure of a cold foam mattress underlines this, while the mattress core stores body heat, adapts to the baby’s body shape and offers a soft, elastic sleeping pad.

  • Very hygienic
  • moisture repellent
  • Particularly breathable
  • heat insulating
  • Good body shape adaptability – therefore gentle on the back
  • Low purchase price
  • Possible sweating if the thermal insulation is too high
  • Unpleasant smell when buying new, which only escapes after intensive ventilation
  • No standardized degrees of hardness and can vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer

Coconut mattresses as a baby mattress

At least the core of this mattress type is made from coconut raw material. This is often covered with latex. The coconut is strongly compressed and offers the baby body a firm base. Since the baby’s spine does not yet have a typical S-shape, the coconut mattress is characterized by its stabilizing properties in relation to the baby’s back.
If the core is surrounded by latex, the coconut mattress is given an adaptability to the body shape. Coconut is usually integrated as a hollow fiber that lasts for many years and therefore gives a coconut mattress a long lifespan.

  • Good air permeability through cross ventilation due to the hollow fibers
  • Heat insulating and moisture absorbing
  • Natural raw material
  • Suitable for allergy sufferers
  • High resistance to germs and fungi
  • Fixed lying surface that is ideal for stomach sleepers and straight baby spines
  • Relatively heavy weight
  • Hardly (if latex is included) or no point elasticity
  • High maintenance effort because regular ventilation is required

Spring mattress for the cot

The innerspring mattress contains a core of steel springs over which different layers of other materials are stretched so that they cannot be felt by the body. With this type of mattress, a distinction is made between pocket and Bonell innerspring mattresses and rarely as children’s mattresses, the barrel pocket innerspring.
Above all, these have a different point elasticity, in which the mattress gives way when there is a load at a certain point. Barrel-shaped innerspring mattresses have a bulbous shape, which allows additional pressing in under load and thus adheres to best can adapt to the body.
Spring mattresses are characterized by particularly good ventilation, which is due to the numerous cavities inside the mattress. This dissipates body heat into the ambient air.

  • Particularly breathable
  • High stability
  • Good elasticity (pocket spring core)
  • Enormous durability
  • Long durability
  • Good value for money
  • Moisture is absorbed by the tissue
  • Mostly not suitable for allergic babies
  • From an orthopedic point of view less suitable for side rackets (Bonell version)

Baby mattress sizes

Baby beds are available in several different sizes, which is why there are many different sizes for the baby mattress.

Baby mattress in 60×120 cm

For smaller cots, such as those often found in Swedish furniture stores or as travel cots, are mattresses with the dimensions 60x120cm offered. They have a lying surface of 0.72 square meters and are equally suitable for babies and toddlers up to a body length of one meter. That roughly corresponds to an age of up to two years.
Especially for mobile use in travel cots, the mattresses with a size of 60×120 cm are usually characterized by their foldability. In this way, transportation in a vehicle is facilitated.

Baby mattress in 70×140 cm

Children’s mattresses with the dimensions 70×140 cm are the standard mattress for children’s beds and are among the most common children’s mattress sizes. They are used in babies as well as in toddlers up to about four years of age. As a rule, the mattress height is between seven centimeters and 13 centimeters.
It is available in a wide variety of materials, such as those offered for adult beds.
If the child has reached a height of approximately 120 centimeters, this mattress size should be replaced with a longer one.

What to look for when buying a baby mattress?

size

It is important to choose the right size when buying, whereby both the height of the child and the bed frame size are important and should be measured before buying. The mattress should not have any free space to the slatted frame, if any, but cover it completely so that babies and toddlers cannot get their fingers caught in it. The child mattress should offer enough space for the child to stretch up and down. Experts recommend a mattress size that is at least 20 centimeters longer than the child’s size. The greater the difference between mattress length and child size, the longer the baby and child mattress can be used.

temper

The degree of hardness plays a major role, as it contributes, among other things, to the development of the spine and sleeping comfort. In the first months of life, babies do not yet have a typical S-shape of the spine, so that good support for the baby’s body due to a higher degree of hardness is particularly advantageous here.
Too soft mattresses immerse the body too far, promote poor posture and increase the risk of suffocation if the face can sink into the material.
For long-term use, mattresses with a degree of hardness are optimal, which corresponds to the body’s development "grows" and gives way and stabilizes where it is necessary for a healthy sleeping position. The degree of hardness should therefore be selected so that the mattress adapts to the body shape. Since the degree of hardness can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, a look at Stiftung Warentest is recommended, which determine children’s mattresses according to the standard DIN EN 1957: 2012. If the mattress is too hard for the child, it can be softened with a mattress topper.

Breathability / moisture protection

Breathability and moisture protection are important criteria that should definitely be considered when making a purchase. Good breathability ensures that the baby gets enough air when sleeping on the tummy. In addition, a breathable mattress allows perspiration to escape and optimizes the bed climate through better ventilation.
Breathability is pointless, however, if a moisture protection is pulled over the mattress that is not also breathable, which is why you should always pay attention to this detail. Moisture protection prevents moisture from penetrating the mattress, which keeps it hygienic and makes it last longer. In addition, good wetness protection can absorb moisture so that the child’s body feels dry and, above all, absorbs sweat, reducing the risk of a cold.

materials

Cold foam is currently one of the best-selling materials, closely followed by latex and innerspring. In comparison, coconut is quite hard and is suitable for infants and babies under the age of one, as long as the spine is still quite straight and stability is paramount.
Although latex mattresses rarely consist of 100 percent pure rubber, they offer children with an appropriate level of firmness adaptable lying comfort and healthy posture in every sleeping position.
Spring mattresses adapt well to the body shape. However, they should not be used for the other siblings, because beds do not recede, as is the case with latex. But they are extremely hard-wearing and withstand hopping and romping well.

washability

Hygiene plays a role in babies and toddlers play a particularly important role. The milk bottle quickly drips onto the mattress, saliva runs out of the child’s mouth and sometimes the diaper does not hold tight and despite the protection against moisture, the mattress can be affected. In addition, bedrooms and mattresses often offer optimal conditions for mites and house dust. If the mattress cover is washable, a significantly higher level of hygiene can be achieved than with mattresses without a washable cover.

reference

When buying a mattress, it should be ensured that the cover is removable and washable in order to maintain the highest possible standard of hygiene in the long term. In addition, an elasticity is advantageous, which ensures optimal adaptation to the mattress. In this case, covers made from mesh formation are particularly suitable, while woven covers are much more rigid.
The hard-wearing Drell fabric is a classic reference. It has a dense and firm fabric and supports the firm lying properties of mattresses. Drell covers are usually not removable and are therefore less suitable for children’s mattresses for hygienic reasons. Removable Drell covers can be found on high-quality models.
Terrycloth covers are considered a particularly absorbent cover and adapt particularly well to mattresses. However, terry wears out very quickly. This can be prevented with a fleece quilting.
The so-called double cloth cover consists of an elastic fabric in which several layers of fabric are knitted together. It has a good arch adjustment, is very durable and breathable and can usually be removed for washing.

Reinforced tread edges

The thinner and softer a baby mattress is, the more important it is to buy a reinforced tread. This surrounds the mattress and ensures stability. Especially if babies pull themselves up and stand, there would be a risk without a reinforced edge that the child could pinch their feet between the mattress and the bed frame if the edge of the mattress sags. The reinforced step edge ensures that the edge of the mattress cannot be pushed in significantly and thus offers children more safety and protection against injuries. In addition, the tread edges of the mattresses give more stability overall, keeping them in better shape, especially when subjected to high loads, such as bouncing, so that they last longer.

Little pollutants

When buying a baby mattress, make sure that it contains no or at least only a few pollutants. Children, especially as babies, are in bed for ten or more hours in the first year of life and could suffer health problems from inhalation or contact with pollutants and not infrequently become more susceptible to allergies. New mattresses often smell unpleasant. This does not necessarily indicate chemical pollutants. It is often production or packaging smells that evaporate quickly after intensive ventilation. For sensitive and allergic children, only a material that has anti-allergic properties should be selected.

Seal / Opinion

If you want to buy a baby mattress, you should not rely solely on the statements of the seller or advertising slogans. Numerous mattresses have a so-called seal of approval, which provides information in various areas, especially for pollutants. For example, Öko Tex issues safety seals after a detailed assessment and pollutant checks of mattresses, so that customers can be assured that they can buy a low-pollution or pollution-free mattress. TÜV and QUL seals also certify low pollution levels. The LGA quality certificate awards pollutant-tested certifications and also relates to other factors such as workmanship, materials, durability and much more. So far, the seal of approval is rare "Blue Angel" was awarded, which is primarily based on environmental friendliness. Stiftung Warentest creates extensive test reports.
