Before and after the operation

Behavior before and after the procedure / checklists

At a glance:

  • Before the procedure: plan recovery time, prepare ice pack
  • For the procedure: Organize collection, comfortable clothes, sober for six hours before anesthesia and nitrous oxide
  • After the procedure: cool the cheek, take care, do not speak, eat well, take medication

Behavior before the procedure

At a glance:

  • Before the procedure: plan recovery time, prepare ice pack
  • For the procedure: Organize collection, comfortable clothes, sober for six hours before anesthesia and nitrous oxide
  • After the procedure: cool the cheek, take care, do not speak, eat well, take medication

There is little to note before the procedure. Most importantly, prepare ice packs or cool packs to cool the wound area. Please note that the cheeks should be cooled for at least 36 hours (even at night). A decent supply of cooling means should therefore be stored in the freezer compartment

At school or at the employer you should indicate the required recovery time. Please note that you are not allowed to do any physical work after 3 or 7 days (at complicated distances). You are fully operational after about 14 days. If you are a competitive athlete, competitions should be scheduled after about six weeks. In upper wisdom teeth, it may be that the maxillary sinus is opened. Then no air travel may be started for 14 days.

For the first 24 hours after surgery, you should not be alone to help with complications. You’re welcome

In this context, please note that you are not allowed to drive for 24 hours.

Behavior on the day of the procedure

At a glance:

  • Wear comfortable clothing for the procedure
  • For nitrous oxide: be there 30 minutes before (because of the sedative tablet)
  • For nitrous oxide and narcosis: Do not eat or drink 6 hours before!
  • Ensure collection

For wisdom teeth surgery, you should get unvarnished (make-up smeared during surgery) and in comfortable clothing. Even facial jewelry should be left at home. Please brush your teeth first. Very important is the sobriety requirement when treating with nitrous oxide or under general anesthetic: You must not eat or drink 6 hours before the procedure. Only a glass of clear water without soda is allowed until three hours before the procedure. Since we give you the tranquilizer tablet half an hour before the procedure when treating nitrous oxide, you should make an appointment earlier. Please make sure you are picked up! You are also prohibited from participating in road traffic after local anesthesia, and in any case after treatment with nitrous oxide or narcosis. You will receive some painkillers as well as a cool pack for your way home after the surgery. So you do not need to bring ice cream.

Behavior after the procedure

At a glance:

  • Chill the cheek for 36 hours, even at night
  • spare yourself, no physical work, little talk,
  • Store upper body and head high, sleep in a low position
  • Food or drinks better cold or lukewarm at most
  • Eat carbohydrate-rich foods, eat plenty, and puree the food best
  • Take medication as prescribed

Store cool, protect, upper body and head up: All these measures are designed to lower blood pressure in the wound area. As a result, less blood in the wound, which prevents the swelling of the cheek. By cooling the blood vessels contract, sitting quietly instead of physical activity ensures a low pulse. The head should always be stored higher than the heart. Best for a sitting or semi-sitting posture – even at night! Incidentally, chewing and speaking are also stimulating circulation. The best are therefore pureed food and the reading of a good book. Unfortunately, we experience again and again that the cooling at night refrain and also slept flat. The result is always a big cheek on the sleeping side. For cooling, use gel pads or ice cubes wrapped in a thick towel. Direct skin contact would lead to frostbite of the skin. Also, the sucking of ice cubes of clear ice is helpful.

Since the mouth is sometimes limited, but also because chewing boosts the blood flow, we recommend tasty meals from the blender or mashed. Carbohydrate-rich foods (eg mashed potatoes) provide good energy without having to eat large quantities. So you stay agile and fit. All meals should be cold or lukewarm at best. From the third day on, you can move on to a normal diet with a soft diet that requires little chewing.

– When sports, exercise and sauna? The first week please only slight movement, no sport. With Sport, you should start at the earliest after one to two weeks, but listen to your body. If the wound begins to throb or hurt, then it is important to stop. Please take a sauna after 2 weeks at the earliest. Competitive sports and competitions only after 6 weeks.

– Air travel, diving and nose brushing If the upper wisdom teeth had contact with the antrum, you must not blow your nose for 14 days and also make no air travel. Diving is taboo for 4 weeks. If the nose is blocked, use nose drops to deflate.

drugs

At a glance:

  • You will receive ibuprofen 400 tablets from us, which can also be purchased over the counter at the pharmacy
  • If we have prescribed an antibiotic, it must be taken at least 7 days
  • Mouth rinse solution only after 24 hours for a maximum of two weeks use
  • Nosedrops: If the nose is blocked and you are not allowed to whistle

In any case, you will receive some painkillers from us. Ibuprofen 400 is best used as a painkiller or ibuprofen 600 for more severe pain. Please note the recommended maximum daily dose of 2400 mg (equivalent to 4 tablets ibuprofen 600), which may only be exceeded in consultation with a doctor.

Depending on the type of wisdom tooth surgery, additional medication may be required.

Mouthwash (chlorhexidine): To disinfect the oral cavity on the days after the procedure. The application should take place over a maximum of 7 to 14 days. Prolonged application may cause the formation of a black coating on the tongue which, however, has no other side effects.

Antibiotic: The administration of an antibiotic is required only after very difficult wisdom tooth distances or if the upper jaw wisdom teeth had contact with the antrum. As a rule, we prescribe a penicillin (isocillin), as it is very effective in the oral cavity. Please let us know if you have penicillin allergy so we can prescribe you another antibiotic. The antibiotic must be taken for at least seven days, as otherwise resistant germs form. The dosage is three tablets a day, most easily with meals.

Nose drops: The upper wisdom teeth often have contact with the maxillary sinus. In wisdom tooth surgery, this often creates a connection between the mouth and the antrum (so-called mouth antrum connection, MAV), which is sutured tightly by me. In order to keep the suture tight, it is not allowed to bite in the next 10 days (overpressure in the maxillary sinus). If the nose is blocked, it can be cleared by means of the nose drops. The nose drops are therefore only used when the nose is blocked.
