Expert review: dental supplement insurance test
Many consumers are quickly unsure when it comes to the very complex issue of finance and insurance in general. Hardly surprising considering the German financial landscape with all its scandals in the past.
One source of information many people rely on is the Stiftung Warentest, with her sister magazine FINANZtest takes a close look at various financial and insurance products at regular intervals. Also the topic dental insurance has the Stiftung Warentest illuminated at regular intervals.
In the past, Financial Testing has been examining dental supplements about every 2 years – so we were a bit surprised that it was already time again in May 2019 after the last test was published a year earlier (5-2018). Much has not changed compared to the previous year’s test!
Some providers had to adjust their contributions partly due to increased Leistungsausgaben not insignificant, other offerers brought out completely new tariffs – including some very good Zahntarife, e.g. the Bavarian with the ZAHN Prestige or the Hanse Merkur with the new 100% tariff EZL or Ottonova with the Tariff tooth 100.
Unfortunately, the testers from Stiftung Warentest do not learn – ours Criticism of the past years was unfortunately not accepted by Stiftung Warentest. The test focuses solely on the performance area dentures. A Subdivide the test into categories, e.g. Tariffs with prophylaxis and tooth preservation, pure dental insurance would have made sense.
Therefore, it is no wonder that the contributions of "Very well" evaluated tariffs in the test very much apart – you compare so synonymous a bit Apples with pears!
Also in the supplementary dental insurance test 2019 the following points have to be criticized:
- no Inclusion of benefits for Dentistry & prophylaxis in the test results
- impractical “weighting” of the individual service areas – the services for implants & Inlays should be weighted much more in contrast to the standard care and normal crown / bridge restorations
- the initial ones power limitations the individual tariffs were barely included in the rankings – a point which in our experience is very much weighted by many interested parties
- too low requirements for one "very good" rating – Example implants: After Stiftung Warentest a tariff is not devalued, if he Limits the services for implants in the terms of insurance. According to the criteria of financial test, it is sufficient if a tariff reimburses 2 implants every 5 years and a maximum of one in the remaining years. Anyone looking at dentures invoices in excess of 10,000 or 20,000 euros, however, quickly realizes that such high bills will only arise when more than 1 or 2 implants "installed" become. Here, the wheat is separated from the chaff – tariffs with such limitations should be deducted in such a test. In our review of implant dental insurance we include such restrictions.
In addition, e.g. a tariff rated “Very Good” indicating its performance to the advance payment of the statutory health insurance “knots”, which in our view is an absolute negative criterion. This is the tariff DKV KDT85, which was rated at 1.3.
Pays the statutory health insurance no fixed subsidy for a medically necessary treatment, it is also from the private supplementary insurance “no benefit” – is such a dental insurance sense makes you can ask?
Evil tongues claim, Stiftung Warentest would base its evaluation criteria on a low level so that as many providers as possible are rated good or very good – after all, an organization such as the Stiftung Warentest has to work economically – and every purchased test seal generates a fair amount of money (between 5,000 and 25,000 Euro). And for one "satisfying" Of course, I do not want to pay any insurance company.
In any case, the consumer is doing a disservice – nice and good, if the Stiftung Warentest examined over 200 dental tariffs – the decision does not really make it easier for the consumer, if about 2 thirds with the highest grade "Very well" have been evaluated. We are curious if the next test will be published in 2020 or 2021.

Best Dental Supplementary Insurance – Now with the Expert Test 2019 Finding
Are you also looking for the “best dental supplement insurance”? Not so easy to find, right? In our detailed guide we tell you what really matters and how to find the insurance that suits you best.
Interested dental insurance, would rather remain anonymous
Why you should not rely solely on the Stiftung Warentest
Every 1-2 years, dental supplements are taken under scrutiny by Finanztest. Can not you make it easy and just finish the test winner of Stiftung Warentest? That must be the best dental insurance, or not?
No, it’s that easy >does not take into account acceptance guidelines – in this respect it is unclear whether the test winner’s rate is even lockable
So you should not blindly trust a test verdict and complete any product just because it has been awarded by the Stiftung Warentest as a test winner!
But how do you find then the best dental insurance?
A “rigid” test may not be the best way to find the best and most appropriate dental insurance. The results are usually too inappropriate, taking into account individual aspects such as acceptance guidelines and desired benefits.
The way to the best dental insurance therefore leads to only one Combination of several instruments:
- Expert Rating
- Comparison computer with acceptance check
- needs-based advice
In our opinion, finding the perfect insurance requires a little more than just some kind of test – and even with a comparison calculator, it’s not always easy for a layman to stay in the picture.
The question of which insurance suits you best, is a very individual. A first overview can be found here on the basis of To win the test winner of our expert test (see below).
Whether the desired tariffs are also lockable, check with the help of our free comparison calculator. This asks before displaying the tariffs first of all a few details on your dental condition and filters out the unrealizable tariffs for you.
–> here you go to the dental supplement insurance comparison (simply enter date of birth and start the calculator)

Our dental supplement insurance expert test
Of course, the benefits and conditions of an insurance must be scrutinized. We believe that the price of a product should not initially be included in the rating of an insurance company for the following reasons
- on the one hand, the contributions can be adjusted – so it is of little use to you if an insurance today gets the predicate “very good”, because the contribution is very cheap, if just this insurance then later increase the contributions, because the tariff too cheap was calculated
- On the other hand, quality rather than price should be the main focus – you can also complete cheaper fares, but then you should be realistic about realizing that there is less / worse performance for less money as a rule
For these reasons, our expert test evaluates only the benefits of each dental insurance.
So the performance for our expert test was weighted:
