I remember a while ago when I was looking for a place to live as a student. A real challenge back then – a tense real estate market, coupled with no noteworthy income and the prejudices that confront relatively young tenants.

But one morning, a curious friend decided to come along. Instead of a reaction to the motto “Oh, you scare, a shared flat!” The landlord was visibly pleased. My boyfriend wore a classic black work trousers the way carpenters carry them on the roll.

Here are the details of the ten pants in comparison.

1st recommendation – Blakläder work trousers

In stark contrast to the other work trousers presented here, is the Blakläder X1500. This blue work pants seems to me personally of the kind “unbreakable”.

It is made of 100% heavy, abrasion-resistant Cordura Denim, and thus follows the traditional classic of heavy jeans workwear (more in the guide below).

The Blakläder pants leaves nothing to be desired. It has many side pockets has a loose cut, the best material and workmanship.

With these pants I can do work of the heavier kind – I would not put on painting work, however, it is too heavy and somewhat “stiff”.

But that is not a disadvantage and otherwise I find the pants also very versatile. The only downside is the price, but I think that you will enjoy the Blakläder work pants for a long time.

For me, the Blakläder is indeed in the luxury category, but is the best work pants I have ever had.

2. Cheap – Carhartt work trousers

Let’s get straight to a real classic under the work pants, which are available in all sorts of colors, including:

Although the Carhartt work trousers are not made of durable denim, they are not to be despised. These trousers are made of heavy cotton canvas, the so-called “Cotton Duck” (I will discuss the advantages over denim in more detail below).

The triple seams and reinforced pockets clearly put on longevity. The multiple pockets and tool loops are not only practical, but also unobtrusive and thus never in the way.

The movement is never limited, on the contrary. This is also ensured by the so-called relaxed fit, which means that the trousers are cut further along the buttocks and thighs

So she has everything, which I think must have a working pants, at an absolutely fair price. The Carhartt work trousers is my price-performance favorite.

3. Pfanner work trousers

The work trousers by Pfanner are made of a light textile blend of cotton and polyester, like many work trousers of medium quality and quality.

Particularly noteworthy is the stretch on the buttocks and on the knees, which provides plenty of freedom of movement. The knee pockets for knee pads are another plus of these pants, although that is the standard for the newer pants.

Furthermore, these trousers have several additional cargo pockets, and thanks to the reflectors also the work safety is very important.

Conclusion: A solid work trousers with good price-performance ratio.

4. BP work pants

The BP work trousers are much cheaper than Pfanner trousers, but with similar characteristics. The differences are nevertheless essential.

The BP trousers are made of 100% cotton, so it has no elastane, but a rubber waistband on the back for flexible comfort. Nevertheless, it is expected that the trousers will change slightly after multiple wearing and washing in the fit.

In addition to cargo pockets, there are two lockable pockets for cell phone or keys.

All in all, the BP work trousers have much less to offer and are not as comfortable and hard-wearing.

5. Kübler work trousers “Pulsschlag”

Closer to the Pfanner pants is the Kübler work trousers – characteristic and material mixture are similar. Also, these Kübler pants reflectors.

In terms of price, Kübler trousers are in the middle range, ie under the Pfanner trousers, but a scrutinizing look at the workmanship shows clear differences in quality.

I’ll go into that later, but a key feature of a work trousers is their durability and it starts with the material and the seams. The latter I find the Kübler work pants less convincing.

6. Mascot work trousers “Faro”

The medium-price Mascot work pants, however, has little special features.

However, at first glance, the solid processing of the triple seams is striking. The canvas mixture also suggests a certain longevity.

The pants have an extra hilt for the hammer and a folding rule and mobile phone pocket. As with the Kübler work trousers, the Mascot only has Velcro closures on the pockets. Here I would prefer snaps, so deductions in the B-note.

7. Dickie’s work pants

And here is another classic and my design favorite. The Dickies work trousers have a so-called slim fit, so it is a bit more modern cut and is therefore often worn as casual pants.

But even as a work trousers, it is quite passable – no wonder, because the tradition is clearly reflected in quality here. Triple seams, the most important pockets (folding rule, hammer loop) and a fair price are impressive.

But for one or the other, the Dickies could become uncomfortable with certain, harder jobs.

8. Dassy work trousers “Liverpool”

Another cheap working pants comes from Dassy. The “Liverpool” – as promising as the name may sound – can not convince.

What I like most are the triple stitching and the elastic waistband, which is also adjustable. But neither material, nor the extras are worth mentioning for me.

If you are looking for a very basic work trouser, so as not to mess up your everyday clothes, all right. But in my opinion, that’s not worth it. It does not have to be the luxury model, but for 20 euros more you get something much better.

9. Crow work pants

Another cheap alternative is the crow’s work trousers “Profession Pro”, which makes a much more stable, durable look with just 10 euros more than the Dassy pants.

More specifically, the Profession Pro is made of extremely lightweight blended fabric, yet solid in construction and relatively sturdy.

Also, the crow’s work pants have eight pockets and a hammer loop. This is really neat for this price.

However, the Carhartt wins the title “Preis-Leistungsfavort” because for me the processing and the material at (almost) the same price are simply better. And longevity of my pants is saving me, especially since it is only a few euros.

10. Planam work pants

Last but not least a work trousers that relies on safety. The Planam work trousers not only have the usual upholstery pockets, triple seams or durable material.

This work trousers also have the orange signal color, which is not the worst, especially when working with others or outdoors on the street. But of course I do not necessarily need that for the home garden.

In any case, the Planam work trousers also offers a solid price-performance ratio.

These are much more than just a traditional uniform.

So are the black carpenter pants made of extremely durable and thick cord with loops for the hammer, one welding trousers needs fire and heat resistant material and so on.

And here is the reason why you need a pair of work pants, and what is the difference between a decrepit old pants and a work pants.

Maybe you’re thinking, “Oh, nonsense! I just need a pair of pants so I do not mess up my favorite pants! “

Let’s do a thought experiment to help us work out more specific requirements for a work trousers.

Let’s say you have old jeans in the closet that you do not want to wear anymore.

1. Fabric of the work pants

An interesting example, because real denim with a certain density is very popular in the production of work pants.

After all, the legendary Levi’s 501 jeans was nothing but a “simple work trousers”. Only workers wore jeans in the 1940s.

We keep jeans or better “Denim” as material in any case once in mind.

2. Thickness and durability of work trousers

Maybe you’ll take your pants off because they’re worn or even have holes.

Everyone should realize that these pants then, of course, no protection against dirt or dirt – for example, color – offers.

Another example that is more suitable for everyday use are simply pockets that offer a pair of work trousers – in any case, I can put my ruler or hammer badly in my jeans pocket.

And no, I can not always just drop my tool, because I’m standing on a ladder, for example, or completely on our roof … you understand.

Three features of a work trousers

From the above, therefore, there are three key factors that can play a role in the purchase of a work trousers.

  2. Fit and
  3. special features.

1. material

In principle, there are two substances that make up the work pants.

I’ve already told you, the classic denim or the “denim” is still popular. The other stuff is the so-called “Cotton Duck”, which has absolutely nothing to do with ducks. This is “canvas” cotton.

Here’s an overview of the respective advantages and disadvantages.

Jeans

  • The more often you wash them, the more convenient
  • stronger and thicker than conventional jeans
  • Flannel or fleece lining will warm you in cold weather
  • less durable, but more comfortable

Canvas

  • less prone to cracking due to the smooth surface
  • wind resistant
  • flammable, but proven in dealing with heat
  • must be entered over time (like denim)

Fire, scissors, light

In addition, there are special mixtures of substances and materials that meet special requirements.

  • flammability
  • heat resistance
  • and cut-resistant pants.

Often, these special work pants are coated accordingly, but you will also find appropriate essays, for example, made of tough leather.

The weight of the trousers also depends on the material. For heavier jobs, which load the pants accordingly, firmer materials are to be selected, which are then also heavier.

If, on the other hand, you only want a paint or splash guard, you can also resort to lighter material. Of course, these fabrics are not as durable, but also more comfortable in warmer temperatures.

2nd fit

There are basically three different variants on average, often with the Anglicisms

  • Classic Fit (“Normal” average fit),
  • Relaxed Fit (extra loose on the buttocks and thighs)
  • and Slim fit (more modern version with narrower legs)

Basically, the work trousers should be comfortable and never too tight. But that can hardly happen, because even with the Slim Fit, the legs are usually so far that they go over the work boots.

3. Special features

Let us now turn to the special characteristics of certain trousers. These have either a functional aspect or support the durability of the pants, so that keeps a good work pants for years.

These are essentially:

  • special seams, triple reinforced or glued,
  • rivet,
  • coarse / large zippers, which are better against dirt, abrasion and constant wear than conventional zippers,
  • Wind and water repellent (DRW) coated work trousers, especially softshell work pants,
  • additional belt loops like a hammer loop, and basically broader and reinforced belt loops to carry the weight of the tools,
  • reflectors,
  • wind resistance.

But speaking of shorts, is only a long work trousers a good one? Usually – and all of our examples above illustrate that too – pants are also a protection of the leg, not just practical toolboxes to put on.

And logically, short or 3/4 work trousers offer less protection.

Nevertheless, I can, for example, understand construction workers or roofers who in the middle of summer are reluctant to work in full sun in the blazing sun.

But for me personally short work pants are something for professionals – or to do light work.

And here, as with trekking pants, there are also the ever-popular zip-off legs, which I personally find very practical.

So you can wear the work pants all year round.

Ladies and children work pants

In the comparison above, we only looked at men’s work pants. I think ladies too can wear these pants if the size is right and the pants are comfortable.

Nevertheless, there are special work pants for women. Mostly the fit is the main difference between women’s and men’s pants, and that makes some sense.

But there are also differences in functionality – unfortunately, I would like to say.

Because women’s work pants are still more fashionable (of the type “stripped cargo pants”) and less functional than men’s trousers – I spare myself the cultural-critical comment here, but I would like to say that I see no reason why women are not the same should have functional requirements.

Sure, if you need a pair of garden pants, you might not put so much value on the many tool loops and pockets – but who says that women only work in the garden??

Child work pants – children and work

Even more interesting, however, I find the phenomenon of child labor pants – I can understand that the little ones like dad (or mom!) Want to be and “help” at work. Or to masquerade for carnival as a “master builder”.

But honestly – your child needs a real working trousers?

Summary – my first work pants

I think my good friend enjoyed dressing up then. Anyway, I’ve never caught him doing home improvement, let alone carpentry or the electrical system. And it speaks for the classic roofing work trousers like durability – it does not break that fast.
