How much does whitening cost??
White teeth are considered ideals of beauty – so more and more people are trying to lighten their teeth naturally or artificially.
For a professional treatment with a dentist (in-office bleaching) you have to expect costs between 200, – and 650, – Euro.
On the other hand, you get products for a light lightening at home from just 10, – Euro.
Cost composition for whitening
Since whitening is often performed for purely aesthetic reasons, and only in very rare cases has a medical benefit, this benefit is not covered by the health insurance (whether statutory or private) or a dental insurance.
For this reason, the dentist can set the price for whitening (basically) himself. So come quite different prices.
The whitening is also subject to VAT, unless there is a medical need.
The costs are made up of the treatment fee, the bleaching material and any laboratory costs if a home rail is manufactured.
Since the result of professional bleaching usually only lasts about two years, you should think carefully about which method is the right one for your needs.
The different whitening methods
Bleaching for Home – Home Bleaching
One possible method of whitening is home bleaching, which uses over-the-counter preparations such as whitening strips or gel-filled strips.
The active ingredient is usually rather small doses, so injury or irritation of the gums are prevented. Therefore, you achieve so only a small brightening.
Whitening Strips
Whitening strips or whitestrips are bleach-filled strips of plastic that can only be used once and can be used at home. They are available at the drugstore or pharmacy.
They are inexpensive, but are only suitable for a slight whitening and only for the front tooth area.
Although the product is over-the-counter, it should not be used without medical supervision. Otherwise hypersensitivity reactions or application errors can not be detected in time.
However, whitening strips are only suitable for a straight, regular row of teeth. With crooked teeth or tooth gaps, it can lead to an irregular result, which is due to the mass production and the lack of individual fit.
Whitening gels / varnishes
Bleaching gels or lacquers are also over-the-counter and are applied directly to the teeth.
However, you should follow exactly the instructions on the leaflet.
The bleaching performance is rather low here, so the product should be used rather supportive, for example, to refresh an earlier lightening.
Whitening kits
In the trade, you are often lured with ready-made sets for home-bleaching. These usually include a mouthguard, a whitening gel and a syringe to disperse the gel.
You should be aware that the splint is not individually adapted and bleach can escape. If this comes into contact with the gums this can lead to irritation and even serious inflammation.
Therefore, use these products only under dental supervision.
For home bleaching methods you should expect about 10, – to 150, – Euro per set.

Well-known additional products
mouthwash
Special lightening mouthwashes have no lightening effect per se, but can prevent or reduce discoloration.
For example, they are a sensible supplement for smokers or frequent use of strong coloring foods (coffee, tea …).
Lightening toothpastes
Special whitening toothpaste advertise to lighten the teeth permanently. Discoloration in enamel, however, they can not solve, but only remove superficial contamination.
However, the regular use of such toothpastes is not recommended because the tooth surface can be attacked by the contained emery particles, so that the teeth are much more sensitive.
Professional bleaching to take away – pre-assembled rails
The dentist can also make customized splints for you.
They have the advantage that they are flexibly adaptable and therefore can cover the entire dentition. Therefore, this method is especially worthwhile for people with irregular teeth or tooth gaps.
The splints are then filled with stronger bleach and are applied at home for several hours daily for 1 to 3 weeks. The costs for a rail are between 100, – and 450, – Euro and 20, – to 70, – Euro for the gel to fill up.
In the end, you can expect a clear brightening that can last for several years.
Whitening at the Dentist – In-Office Whitening
Furthermore, you can also get treatment directly in your dental office, the so-called in-office bleaching.
First, the gums are covered for protection and then a stronger whitening gel is applied directly to the teeth. Depending on the desired level of lightening, two sessions may be necessary.
Here you should expect costs between 200, – and 650, – Euro. Again, you will achieve a strong lightening that lasts up to several years.
Whitening of dead teeth – Internal bleaching
For dead teeth that change their color from light gray to dark gray to blue over time, a bleaching can be performed.
Here, however, does not help normal bleaching, as this only penetrates into the surface but not into the tooth interior. The treatment of dead teeth therefore requires special expertise and a special pre- and post-treatment.
Therefore, the internal bleaching is usually more expensive than the usual bleaching.
The Walking Bleach technique uses sodium perborate or carbamide peroxide. Power bleaching uses hydrogen peroxide.
The bleaching agent is introduced into the interior of the tooth and, depending on the technique, repeatedly refilled or remixed.
Then the mouth and the tooth are thoroughly cleaned. Aftercare is recommended as the tooth may still darken.
The final result is a clear brightening that lasts for several years. Due to the increased effort costs of up to 500, – Euro are possible.
Procedure of the whitening treatment at the dentist
It is by no means unnatural for a tooth to darken over the course of a lifetime as the white enamel wears away over time and the underlying yellow dentin becomes visible.
But especially the genes are responsible for how fast the enamel wears off. The usual suspects such as caffeinated drinks (coke, coffee, tea), red wine or cigarettes accelerate the discoloration of the teeth.
Another variant of how tooth discoloration can develop is through excessive brushing or grinding teeth. The enamel is increasingly worn away and the yellow dentin (dentin) emerges.
Today, almost only the constant oxidation bleaching is used. Bleaches with hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide or various chlorine compounds are used. The bleaching agents release oxygen, which permanently destroys the dyes.
Prerequisites for whitening are healthy gums and no caries. You also need to be of legal age for the treatment.
It offers a professional teeth cleaning before bleaching, so that the bleach can penetrate better into the tooth. Depending on the practice you can reckon with 60, – to 150, – Euro.
After the treatment – which can take about two to three hours – the bleached tooth enamel should be cured with fluorides. How long the result lasts in an individual case depends on many factors (for example hygiene, care, meals, etc.).
The teeth are very sensitive after bleaching, which is why the consumption of coloring foods (beetroot, black tea, coffee, wine) should be avoided for a few days. You should also avoid or at least severely restrict smoking.
Risks and facts about bleaching
For one, you should be aware that whitening can only lighten natural teeth. Crowns or fillings are therefore not changed in their color.
Bleaching may also cause gum irritation and increased sensitivity of teeth and cervicals. The gums can swell or become irritated. The enamel becomes more vulnerable.
Therefore, acidic drinks and fruit should be avoided within 24 hours immediately after use.
If you accidentally swallow bleach, stomach and intestinal complaints may occur.
If the teeth are not caries free, the tooth nerve can also be damaged. Excessive whitening causes enamel depletion, causing it to lose hardness.
Therefore, a professional whitening should not be used more often than every 2 years.
Of course, you should also bear in mind that the result may not match your wishful thinking.
Alternatives to bleaching
As an alternative to bleaching, you may also consider microabrasion. The top layer of the enamel is easily ground, which removes superficial dirt. The cost starts at about 50, – Euro.
Another variant, which is especially useful for irregular tooth color (for example, white spots), are the veneers. These are thin ceramic shells that are placed on the top of the tooth and hide discoloration.
