Bombardier today celebrates the 170th anniversary of the Bombardier plant in Görlitz, where rail vehicles have been built since 1849. With its numerous innovations, which enjoyed great demand worldwide, the plant wrote a piece of railway history and is the oldest plant in the country with continuous activity in rail vehicle construction.

“It all began 170 years ago with the construction of a simple wooden wagon and a vision of the founder Christoph Lüders. From the first saloon sleeping cars for the imperial court train to the development of the modern double-decker multiple-unit trains, we have built and continue to build for rail,” says Michael Fohrer, Bombardier Germany boss. “The employees here are partly working in the third and fourth generation and ensure the success of the plant with their tireless commitment.

For many decades the double-deck cars, whose success story began in 1936 with the construction of the double-deck cars for the Lübeck Büchener Eisenbahn, have been the heart of the Görlitzer Bombardier factory. Intercity and regional trains as well as underground trains from Görlitz are also in use worldwide.

“170 years of concentrated competence in rail vehicle construction. The trains from Görlitz carry millions of passengers in Germany, Europe and other parts of the world. This is a great achievement,” emphasized Michael Fohrer. “With its reorientation as a competence centre for body shell construction, the location continues to play a key role at Bombardier in Germany”.

The approximately 1,200 employees of the Bombardier plant in Görlitz are proud of 170 years of rail vehicle construction. And this is celebrated from 12 o’clock with an “open day”! In addition to a colourful stage programme, children’s attractions and factory tours, an exhibition with historic model railways can be visited.
