On average, braces cost between 1,500 and 8,000 euros.

Fixed braces for children

Most children receive braces between the ages of 9 and 11, because the jaw is not fully grown there and the treatment is more effective.

In the case of children, health insurance companies only take on orthodontic treatment if there are clear medical problems. Five identification groups were set up for this.

If your child is one of the lowest two groups, you will have to pay for the braces yourself. From level 3, the health insurance initially pays 80% of the costs. The other 20% must first be taken over by the parents. You will get this back after successful treatment.

Many health insurance companies offer large subsidies to large families. For example, the AOK pays 90% of the costs for the second child and other children (as of 2017).

Here, the provisional own contribution that the parents have to make is only 10%. However, the treatment should be very convenient and economical. Additional services are not covered by the health insurance companies.

Fixed braces for adults

Adult jaw correction is also possible, but since jaw growth is already complete, it is less effective and therefore more lengthy.

The costs are only borne by the health insurance in the event of serious malpositions. If only there Parts of the jaw treated are approx. 1,000 to 1,500 euros due. A complete treatment can, however up to 5,000 euros costs.

Adults often wear braces for 2 to 3 years. You should have the brace adjusted medically about once a month. Regular follow-up checks are then recommended.

Special case: removable braces

Removable braces are a solution for dealing with less severe misalignments. They are also suitable for children who have not yet broken all their teeth.

In contrast to fixed braces, they have various advantages, especially when it comes to easy cleaning. However, in contrast to fixed braces, speaking is much more difficult.

With loose braces, an individual plastic base is first formed, which is then attached to the teeth using stainless steel correction elements. There are orthodontic screws on the removable braces, with which the braces can be adjusted accordingly.

A removable brace must also be readjusted at regular intervals in order to be able to optimally shape the jaw.

It is recommended to wear the removable braces at least 14 hours a day. Many orthodontists advise against wearing comfort and limited ability to speak using the braces overnight.

The orthodontist must always decide individually whether a fixed or loose brace makes more sense.

How can I save?

Especially with fixed braces, many orthodontists offer extra services, such as Brackets and arches in different designs. For example, self-ligating brackets should stick to the teeth without the striking rubber. From a medical point of view, however, standard braces without special additives are just as effective.

With a fixed brace, tooth cleaning is made more difficult by the brackets. As a result, those affected have a much higher risk of caries, so oral hygiene should be taken very carefully. For this reason, special braces cleaners are recommended.

In order to avoid illness, many orthodontists also recommend smooth surface sealing. However, this must be paid privately.

A professional tooth cleaning orthodontist is also recommended. Here you should come at a cost between 80 and 120 euros count. But the house dentist can also perform special services for braces wearers. Here, some services are even supported by the health insurance company.

Good to know

After the braces have been removed, so-called retainers are often used, which ensure that the teeth remain in the intended position. If you stay in the patient’s mouth for a maximum of 2 years, these costs will also be covered by the statutory health insurance.

Caution is advised with long-term retainers, which are often recommended by the treating doctor, but are not always absolutely necessary and must also be paid for.

If you add all the additional services together, most parents give between 500 and 2,000 euros in addition to braces for special extras out.

However, DAK-Gesundheit found in a study that even a quarter of families do not get an offer for their free treatment from the orthodontist.
Here it is advisable to inquire exactly and to request a corresponding cost estimate.

If the budget for such a large expenditure is not immediately available, in many medical practices you can also pay monthly flat rates.
