Buecherhimmel: review: children’s book

Myers Holt’s Spies (Monica M. Vaughan)

Every child has one year from the age of twelve "gift". It is different in the children and only the six with the strongest gift are allowed to go to Myers Holt and are trained there as spies for the Kingdom of Great Britain. Christopher Lane is one of those children. He can go to Myers Holt and live there too. He quickly settled in there and made friends with the remaining five children. But suddenly former students and teachers of Myers Holt are attacked and they have no choice: they have to send the six new students of Myers Holt away. As soon as they arrive, they embark on a dangerous mission .

With this book you really wish that you were 12 years old yourself "gift" and would then go to Myers Holt. Because this book enchants with so many things!

The characters alone got me off Beginning on convinced. The book scores with many different characters, but they are all well integrated into the story and no one is neglected. In addition, the protagonists really behave according to their age and do not act that way, i.e. whether they were already 16, even though they are only 12. You can learn a lot about them, but I still want to get to know the protagonists better;)

The author’s writing style is also really nice, but what struck me most about this is that the writing style is not as simple as in most children’s books. The descriptions are also so beautiful that they breathe real life into all of the locations, so you think this school, lovingly and with a lot of imagination, could really exist.

The whole story is really exciting. The tension slowly builds up to the end. You get excited with the characters and you could really put yourself in everyone’s shoes. Even the idea alone is totally interesting, because until now I have not read a single book in which something similar has occurred. Also the different skills that the children had at that time are really fascinating. For example can they read the minds of other people, penetrate their heads and manipulate them and (which would be practical for every student) learn and master all topics simply by leafing through a book and briefly looking at each page.

The cover is beautiful and would have caught my eye in a bookstore. It also fits perfectly and I really imagined Chris to be a bit like the boy on the cover.

The start of a wonderful children’s book series! This book has completely won me over and I really want to know how to proceed. I think the idea is really great and I’m excited to see how it will continue to be implemented in the second volume.
