The economic structure in the district of Steinburg today is characterized by small and medium-sized companies with less than 50 employees. It connects Poland with the Benelux region and passes through the Hamburg metropolitan region. Thus, for the first time, an efficient east-west connection within Schleswig-Holstein and beyond will be available, as well as an option to bypass the bottleneck Elbtunnel. With the A 20, not only the companies in Steinburg, but also those of the entire west coast, are given the opportunity to reach customers south of the Elbe much faster than before.

Another forward-looking project is the supply of the entire county area with fiber optic technology. For this purpose, Zweckverband Breitband Steinburg was founded in 2010. Here are 105 municipalities – almost the entire district – organized.
