ABC, Bugaboo, Joolz & Co – Which stroller suits me? | Test | mamiblock (January 2020).
Because animal strollers are a fairly new product, few people know what features to consider when shopping. However, if you bought strollers, you have a head start. Today we equip you with all the information you need to buy an informed stroller.

I know several cats who got their strollers through JustPetStrollers.com and they raved about personalized customer service, low prices and fast delivery, so I’m happy to recommend them. If you have any questions while shopping for a stroller, just shoot them an email and they will answer pronto. They fit at any low price (with a few restrictions) and shipping is free.
In addition to JustPetStrollers.com, Strollers.com is a good online source for strollers, and they also offer free shipping. If you want to spend some money, carry some elegant and very expensive Italian strollers – cat furraris, if you like.
Petsmart and Petco carry strollers, though not always in their local stores. I’ve seen them in some of the larger stores, but usually only one or two models are kept in stock.
Overstock.com and eBay are good sources for the bargain hunter. If you’re not sure if your cat is enjoying walking, buy a dirt cheap stroller on eBay, try it, then auction it or donate and upgrade to a model that better serves you.
Now let’s take a look at what you need to know before you go shopping.
Before you begin, answer the following questions to determine what type of stroller you should (or shouldn’t) get:
- What kind of terrain will you stroll through? Sidewalks? Gravel or dirt roads? Uneven paths? Small wheels are fine if you are walking on a smooth, smooth surface. Otherwise, consider the models with large (11 or 12 inch) wheels.
- How far will you go for a walk?? If you plan long walks, invest in big bikes and padded handles.
- How often will you go for a walk? Low-end models will likely suffice if you don’t go for walks very often.
- Walk, stroll or jog? The faster you ride, the better the wheels and the more stability you need. Joggers should consider the Jeep Rubicon. There are inflatable tires that allow a smooth ride at high speeds, and the 3-wheel configuration and that firm Front wheel ensure stability. The PetGear AT3 is a good choice for power walkers.
- Where will you stow the stroller?? If space is tight, consider a collapsible stroller.
- Are you going to travel with the stroller? If you stow it in the car (or pull it up), a lightweight collapsible model is the best choice.
- Will your cat stroll alone or will you double? Strollers are rated by weight, which the frame can support, but you also need to consider the size of your cat in relation to the size of the stroller cabin. You will need space to maneuver, especially if you are riding two at a time.
- Your stroller will need wind / rain protection? Many are made of rain-resistant fabric and some with rain and wind protection.
- Your cat needs a hidden place? Some strollers (like Kittywalk’s) have a private area for your cat.
I spoke to Augie Ray from JustPetStrollers.com to find out which stroller is his bestseller and what he would recommend as the best value for under $ 100:
Karen: What is your best-selling stroller, Augie?
Augie: Our best-selling stroller last year is the one that several cats you interviewed own: the Pet Gear AT3. It is spacious, sturdy and practical. We sold 50% more of them than our next most popular strollers. The reviews we get from customers are absolutely great.
Karen: What’s the cheapest pram you have for under $ 100?
Augie: The one that is likely to attract all cats and many dogs and is also the best overall value are the Pet Gear Happy Trails. We have it at $ 84.99 including shipping to the continental US, and at that price, it’s a very nice, reliable, sturdy, functional pet stroller. It has many of the features of the more expensive pet strollers, such as a parent container, a large basket for toys and water, and it folds for easy storage. The Happy Trails are only $ 5 more than the cheapest pet strollers that we offer and it is definitely a better, more spacious stroller for the money.
WHAT IS A CAR?
The following diagram shows a Pet Gear AT3 stroller. It is one of the higher quality strollers and a very popular model. It has a padded handle (more important if you take long walks); a cup holder and a "parents" -Tray (I’ve never used one); full ventilation at the top, front and rear (more important for good visibility than ventilation); Safety reflectors; Storage basket (this is really practical); 11 "Bikes; Parking brake; Shock absorber. Many models also have interior lines and cabin linings that are removed for cleaning.
The functions vary from model to model:
6 or 8-wheel: Four-wheel design (see right) with small wheels, with double wheels on the front like the classic stroller design (some also have double wheels on the back). If you only walk sporadically and only for short distances on flat surfaces, this design will probably suit you well (or serve as a beginner’s car while you determine whether your cat likes to walk or not). Some higher quality strollers also have a more robust version of this type of bike.
3-wheeler (non-inflatable tires): This is an increase from the classic stroller design. The 3-wheel design is more stable, the larger wheels (usually 11 "or 12") ensure a quieter and quieter ride and are ideal for jogging and power walking. If you want to walk on hiking trails, gravel or uneven terrain, choose a Ferris wheel model.
3-wheeler (inflatable tires): I really love the tires because the ride is effortlessly smooth and quiet. This design is best when you are jogging or doing a quick power walk as part of the walk as it offers the best stability at high speeds.
Believe me, cats love to be out of the loop "windows" of the stroller, and the amount of visibility varies from model to model. The mesh also serves as ventilation. The more visibility, the better. A feature of our stroller that I like is a top window so I can see the cats at any time. The cats also like to look behind.
In the specifications for each stroller you will find a weight capacity that gives a guideline for the number of cats you can stuff into. Believe me, you want to limit the number of cats per ride to two (unless you may have a group of kittens) because the cats are chasing position and moving from front to back and need space to maneuver while driving.
However, the weight capacity is only a guideline, and more importantly, the dimensions of the stroller cabin. Your cat (s) must be able to crouch and comfortably turn around.
Augie Ray from JustPetStrollers.com has this recommendation: "People always make the mistake of paying attention to the weight limits for a stroller, but not the dimensions. The weight limits set the upper limits for the frame of the pet stroller, but the dimensions are actually much more important. We recommend people to measure their pets before ordering. One tip is to use tape or newspaper to replicate the length and width of a pet cart’s pet compartment on the floor, which can help determine how a cat or dog will fit. "
Strollers are available that do double and triple duty as strollers, carriers, carriers / backpacks or car seats. For example, the PetGear system shown on the right can be converted into a carrier as well as a car seat. As with many general-purpose designs, this usually means that some design elements are compromised to serve the other purposes. In the case of the stroller, this usually means that either the cabin is much smaller OR the luggage rack is so big that it is cumbersome. If your main goal is to stroll, it may be better to use a stroller to walk around. But if you travel a lot with your cat, the multi-purpose stroller can be purfect for your needs – just don’t expect it to be comfortable for long walks.
Most models have parking brakes and some also have hand brakes. The parking brake is super practical, especially if you live in a hilly area.
LOW-RIDER vs. HIGH-RIDER
I spoke to a couple of cat owners who originally bought strollers with low drivers but switched to high riders. The main reason for buying a low-rider model is easy access for animals that have difficulty jumping into the stroller. This is rarely a problem for cat owners – if your cat is not outpatient, you can simply pick it up and put it in the stroller. We stow our stroller in the garage, so we always carry the cats to the stroller and put them in. Easy access is not a problem for most cats, so I recommend a high-rider model. The cats will have a better view of the landscape, and if you encounter an overly friendly dog, Fluffy will not feel that the dog could pounce on them – she will be eyeing larger dogs over small dogs and eyes, causing they feel more secure.
WIND AND RAIN COVERS
Some strollers come with wind and rain protection. If you live in an area where the weather can change quickly or sudden rain showers occur frequently, you should consider this option.
PORTABILITY AND STORAGE
Does it collapse for travel or storage? Many do it. I have one of the larger models and it folds up and fits well in the back seat of my little car.
If you walk a lot, you may want to vary your walks to parks and trails, and it is great to be able to pack and walk the stroller. Not all buggies are collapsible, so think twice before you make your purchase. JustPetStrollers.com has videos of some of the more popular strollers that fold – they can give you an idea of whether it is something you can manage or not (video links are on the product pages).
The specifications for each model typically include the folded dimensions so you can determine whether they will fit in the storage space or the car when folded.
Is it convertible weather? An inner line enables your team to drive safely in the stroller with the upper flap open. (I recommend that your cat is leashed and fully used to the walk before trying, and you only do this on solo walks.)
The parent compartment fits next to the handle and offers a container for a cell phone, keys, etc., as well as a cup holder.
These are more handy than you might think. We always bring a harness and a leash for each cat, a camera and sometimes a video camera, water bottles, a windbreaker, and before you know it, the basket is full. When Skeezix and I go to Catster headquarters, I drop a small litter box into our rack holder. It fits perfectly, and I don’t have to worry about it getting stuck anywhere.
Toulouse, pictured right, recently received the Kittywalk stroller as a birthday present. Toulouse says: "I love the little room that is available to me in the back!" If your cats are not quite sure, a stroller with a closed area can provide the privacy they need and make the walk more enjoyable for you.
If you buy online (and often even if you buy from a retail store), you need to assemble the stroller before use. In general, it’s easier than anything you buy from IKEA, but if you’re not McGyver, you may want to target an easy-to-assemble stroller. JustPetStrollers.com gives you an idea of how complex the assembly on each product page could be and you can contact them before you buy with your questions.
The weight of the sports car usually corresponds to the robustness. But heavier isn’t always better. If you pack your stroller a lot to travel to the walking places, or if you travel with your stroller, you may want to consider a compact, lightweight model.
ATTENTION CHEAPO KNOCKOFFS FROM CHINA
Augie Ray advises his customers to distance themselves from the cheap China knock-offs: "We bought a lot of customers from us who buy their second pet cart after they got a cheap discount and were disappointed. As pet strollers have grown in popularity, we have seen a lot of cheap, similar looking pet strollers imported from China. We refuse to take a stroller in which we would not trust our pet. Therefore, we only focus on brand names such as Pet Gear, Kittywalk, Petzip, DoggyRide and Burley. "
