Buy diesel now?

Diesel. The evil D-word. Or rather a normal petrol engine? Even though compression ignition engines have gotten a lot of bad press lately, the technology still comes with some advantages. But whether they are actually worth it depends on the use case. And of what the future brings. The question of whether your next car should run on gasoline or diesel, tries passenger cars.De answer here.

Is it worth it for them to buy a diesel instead of a gasoline engine??

The first question most car buyers ask first is: "and how much does it cost me then?" at the moment the diesel price is about 20 cents lower than gasoline, the fuel consumption is also 15 to 20 percent lower compared to a similar gasoline car. For this diesel drivers must more money for insurance and car tax plan. Besides, the purchase price of a car with a diesel engine is usually higher than the price of a gasoline engine. our conclusion: if you are a frequent driver and have at least 15.000 kilometers per year driving a diesel is definitely worth it. On the running costs but also the driving behavior has an influence – long distances are more economical for a diesel engine, because it must first be properly warmed up. For short distances, the engine does not warm up completely and thus does not necessarily consume less fuel than a gasoline engine.

In the past there was also durability of the diesel engine a buying argument, but today diesel and gasoline engines are same as far as your lifetime is concerned.

Diesel, gasoline and adblue

Regardless of whether it runs on gasoline or diesel, the way the engine works is basically the same: an exploding air-fuel mixture drives a piston through a cylinder, and this motion drives the wheels. The main difference is in the ignition: diesel engines have no spark plugs, the mixture ignites itself under pressure. However, in addition to water, oil and fuel, modern diesels need a fourth liquid: adblue, a urea solution responsible for cleaning exhaust gases. But this is not a really significant cost point, because adblue is relatively cheap and you don’t need much of it.

Driving a diesel in the city center?

And then there is the thing with the driving bans. Since the diesel scandal, there are more and more environmental zones in cities and diesel driving bans are coming into force. diesel vehicles that have passed the new euro 6 standard are exempt from this requirement, but they are also correspondingly expensive. Everyone else theoretically has to take a detour that avoids the environmental zones. However, there is no known case of a diesel driver being stopped in an environmental zone. Of course, this does not mean that you should give it a try, after all, an infringement costs up to 80 euros. So if you travel a lot in cities and buy a diesel, please make sure that the pollutant emission complies with the latest standards. In this way, you increase the likelihood that you will not be affected by future tightening of environmental zones.

Diesel or gasoline – which do you choose??

So at the end of the day, it’s up to you: if you drive a lot and are often outside the city center, a diesel could make sense for you. For the average driver, however, a gasoline-powered vehicle is more suitable, and anyone who really wants to drive a gasoline-powered vehicle is better off if you want to do something sensible, buy a small electric car. The problem with diesel exhaust is not due to the greenhouse effect. On the contrary: nitrogen oxides can allegedly even help slow down global warming. Unfortunately, they are also the main cause of acid rain and can cause a number of serious illnesses.
