Cape Town with child - child luggage

Information: Cape Town with child

Why you absolutely have to travel to Cape Town / South Africa with a child – we tell you! Eight good reasons and pictures help you decide.

1. The arrival

There are numerous night flights to South Africa from Germany. Lufthansa only flies to Cape Town via Johannesburg, but low-cost carriers such as Condor, Eurowings or Edelweiß (from Zurich) offer direct connections, even if only in certain seasons. The good 10-hour journey with the children is quite comfortable and relaxed, since the majority of the flight is slept. The trip is also more comfortable for the parents, since the children do not have to be fun (consistently).

2. No time difference

Since there is no time change in South Africa, there is no time difference in South African winter and German summer. If the German clocks back to normal time "UTC + 1" change, the difference is one hour. In Central Europe, it is 8:00 p.m. in December, so it is 9:00 p.m. in Cape Town. This very small, to nonexistent, time difference makes it very easy for the whole family, since none "Jet lag" occurs.

3. The diversity

Cape Town and the entire near to somewhat distant surrounding area have a great range. City, beach, mountains, sea – Cape Town has something for everyone. Here you don’t have to choose between a beach or hiking vacation, city or adventure trip. In Cape Town you will find something for every type of holiday in a very small space.

4. The excursions

Due to the diversity of the surrounding area of Cape Town, there is a huge variety of excursions. The list is very long. Here are a few options. Hiking on Table Mountain, relaxing on small beaches, picnicking in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, looking at penguins or seals, shopping in the city or at traditional markets or simply visiting the typical highlights.

5. Child friendliness

The South Africans are very child-friendly. Those who travel to Cape Town with children do not have to worry about whether children are welcome in restaurants or cafes. It should only be noted that some apartments or houses with their own pool do not allow small children. However, this is only for technical reasons.

6. The animal world

Anyone who travels to Cape Town can observe a large number of wild animals live and in freedom. From small penguins, seals, baboons to whales and ostriches, everything can be found on the Cape Peninsula and the waters around it. Around 2.5 hours’ drive away, in the Bontebok National Park, various antelope species and zebras can be spotted.

Elephants, lions, giraffes and the like can only be observed near Cape Town in private reservations. These offer safari feeling, but at high prices and often not for small children. We advise small children to visit Addo Elephant Park near Port Elizabeth. It is malaria-free and is home to a large number of elephants and other wild animals, including lions.

7. The climate

Cape Town is actually worth a visit all year round, because the Atlantic climate means that the temperature fluctuations are not too great throughout the year. The South African winter is rather mild with daytime temperatures of sometimes up to 20 degrees and the summer heat usually remains pleasant. The thermometer only rarely jumps above 30 degrees. From May to September (winter) more rainy days are expected than from October to April (summer). However, you should be prepared for cold nights in the South African winter, as the houses and apartments have no heating.

8. The cost

Accommodation and living expenses can be kept very low in South Africa. Good, nice accommodations can be found for as little as 50 euros a night. Even entire houses, for example, if you are traveling with a family friend, can be rented at moderate prices.

The cost of living is significantly lower than in Germany. You can therefore take care of yourself perfectly. But even one or two family visits can be easily budgeted.
