All examples are calculated for berlin and with the smallest available vehicle category. We have chosen the cheapest car in the area. We generally used the basic rate, but chose hourly or daily packages if they were cheaper.

For stationary providers, we have added a flat rate of two kilometers to account for a possible detour to the station. This detour can be individually smaller or larger of course. And the prices can vary depending on the vehicle, day and time. There are even examples – but quite realistic.

If you have a taste for it, feel free to sign up with several providers from our list – first choose rates without a monthly base fee. So you can try out the different variants without cost pressure for you.

Pay attention to the deductible

If you are interested in a car sharing provider, you should not only look at the range of vehicles and the prices, but also at the insurance – especially the deductible (SB). This is the proportion of the damage that you have to pay out of your own pocket after an accident. In our comparison, the SB in the basic rates of the various providers ranged from 350 euros (miles) to 1.500 euro (flinkster). In general, only two providers were below the threshold of 500 euro, which is acceptable from our point of view.

With many providers, you can significantly reduce the deductible for an additional annual fee. This is recommended if you use the provider regularly. Sometimes the SB can be reduced for a one-time small amount per rental, at sixt for a fee per minute. In these cases you can weigh the risk before each trip. a leisurely drive on sunday probably has a lower accident risk than if you have to get a bag of cement from the hardware store under time pressure.

Methodology: this is how we arrived at the results

In july 2021, we took a close look at 13 carsharing providers in berlin, hamburg and munich. We checked the information on the websites and sent additional questionnaires to the companies. We have evaluated the following points:

  • Prices: admission fee and three sample trips each: shopping, trip to the lake, weekend trip
  • Fee for processing traffic tickets
  • Deductible (SB) in the event of a claim
  • How easy it is to find the prices on the website?
  • How extensive are the FAQ?
  • App ratings in the apple app store and google play store
  • Size of the business area or. number and distribution of stations
  • Number of vehicles
  • Variety of vehicles
  • Share automatic
  • Share electro

Prices, fees, and service are included in the overall rating with a total of 30%, website and app also with 30%, and vehicles and business area respectively. stations with 40%.

We have basically compared the basic rates without a base fee and calculated the price examples with the smallest vehicle category. Did not respond to our inquiries greenwheels, stadtmobil and snappcar.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What does free floating mean??

Free-flowing" car sharing (sometimes also called "flexible" car sharing) is the modern variant of car sharing that has only been around for a few years now. You can rent and park the cars almost everywhere within a defined zone – the business area; there are no fixed stations. you usually don’t have to pay parking tickets, the car sharing provider settles the fees with the city as a lump sum. this model of car sharing is only available in big cities like berlin, hamburg and munich.

Usually everything is done via an app. Well-known providers include share now from BMW and daimler (a merger of drivenow and car2go), weshare from volkswagen and the berlin start-up miles.

Advantages free floating:
+ book spontaneously if car is nearby
+ park the car "anywhere" after the end of the rental period
+ Some cool car models like convertibles and e-cars

Disadvantages free floating:
– only in a few large cities
– more expensive

What is station-based car sharing?

traditional car sharing, which has existed in germany since the 1980s, works with fixed stations where you pick up the cars and to which you have to return them. The idea was born out of ecological reasons and the consideration to prevent a traffic collapse caused by more and more cars on our roads.

With station-based car sharing, you book a car in advance for a certain period of time. you can pick up the car at a fixed location – such as a supermarket parking lot – or in a narrowly defined area such as a parking zone within certain streets. after rental you usually have to return the car to this location (in rare cases the rental can also be terminated at another station of the provider).

While it used to be common to pick up the key in an outside safe and handwrite any damage to the car in a book, today’s station-based car sharing is mostly completely digital via smartphone app. Known providers are flinkster from deutsche bahn, stadtmobil or cambio.

Advantages of stationary car sharing:
+ planning reliability (car is guaranteed to be there; unless the previous renter doesn’t return it on time)
+ also available in small towns
+ cheaper

Disadvantages stationary car sharing:
– spontaneous booking not always possible
– car can’t just be parked "anywhere" in the end

What is private carsharing?

the almost 50 million private cars in germany are standing around unused most of the day (on average more than 23 hours a day). So it makes sense to offer these cars to other people during the long idle periods. This way the owners can recoup part of the costs.

of course you can simply ask your neighbors or relatives if someone would like to share their car with you. But companies have also tried to turn it into a professional business in recent years – with binding bookings and additional insurance. Currently, there are mainly two major intermediaries for private car sharing: getaround (formerly drivy) and snappcar.

with some cars you still have to arrange a key transfer with the owner. In the meantime, however, quite a few private cars have been equipped with technology that allows you to open the car via app. In this case, the entire rental and return process is digital.

Advantages of private car sharing:
+ many, even unusual cars like teslas
+ can be inexpensive (price determined by owner)

Disadvantages private carsharing:
– spontaneous booking not always possible
– can be expensive (price set by owner)

What distinguishes carsharing from classic car rental??

With classic car rental, you usually rent a car for one or more days. In many cases, you book the car longer in advance and pick it up at a rental car station where you are personally attended to.

Car sharing is faster: you can rent a car spontaneously even for 10 minutes. You do not need to contact a person at the counter, but often open the car via app. But the boundaries between car rental, stationary car sharing and the free-floating model are blurred. That’s why sixt, for example, uses its cars flexibly as rental cars or carsharing vehicles.
