What is the car tax and who has to pay it??

The motor vehicle tax, in short KFZ-steuer, must be paid by almost all vehicle owners once a year. Until 2009, each german state could decide individually on the vehicle tax. Today, however, this is an federal tax that applies uniformly throughout germany.

The car tax works with the polluter pays principle: vehicle owners should pay for the damage to the environment and nature. The amount of the contributions depends on the environmental compatibility of the individual car. The federal government uses the income from the vehicle tax to finance road construction and other infrastructural projects.

All persons have to pay motor vehicle tax who

  • Keeping a domestic vehicle;
  • Keeping a foreign vehicle, which is located in the inland;
  • Use a vintage license plate and red license plate recurrently.

what is the old car tax and how is it calculated?

Since the vehicle tax was still a state tax until 2009, slightly different rules apply to some vehicles. The contributions for cars, the vor the 01. July 2009 registered were charged only according to the pure polluter pays principle.

The pollutant class and the cubic capacity of a vehicle determine how high the motor vehicle tax will be. However, the more power a vehicle has, the more expensive the vehicle tax will be.

Damage to the environment was not taken into account in the old car tax, in fact it was only the wear and tear that a vehicle leaves on the road that was taken into account.

The car tax is calculated depending on the emission standard, per 100 cc or part thereof of engine capacity. A base amount is used here, which must be offset against the engine capacity. If a vehicle has a displacement of 1400 cc, then the amount in the table must be multiplied by 14.

exhaust emission standard gasoline diesel
euro 3 – and better 6.75 euro 15.44 euro
euro 2 7.36 euro 16,05 euro
euro 1 15.13 euro 27,35 euro
euro 0 (formerly without ozone driving ban) 21.07 euro 33.29 euro
euro 0 (other) 25,36 euro 37,58 euro

How is the new car tax calculated?

Since 2009, motor vehicle tax has been regulated on a nationwide basis and also takes into account damage to the environment. In addition to the type of fuel, i.e. gasoline or diesel, the amount of CO2 emitted is also integrated into the calculation.

in the previous calculation, only the wear and tear on the road was taken into account, but not the environmental impact due to the emission of exhaust gases. The basic amount per 100 cc or part thereof has been reduced, but vehicle owners will now pay CO2 emissions of your vehicle. this value is measured in g/km.

According to the new calculation of the motor vehicle tax, vehicle owners pay an amount depending on the fuel type of their vehicle, which is offset against the engine capacity of the vehicle. With a displacement of 1400 ccm, a diesel driver would have to multiply the basic amount of 9.50 euros by 14.

Fuel type per 100 cc or part thereof
gasoline 2.00 euro
diesel 9,50 euro

To this amount, which depends on the fuel type and power of a vehicle, a fee of 2 euro per gram of emitted CO2 added.

However, only those emissions are included that are above a tax allowance lie. The amount of the exemption limit depends on the first registration of the vehicle.

First registration exemption limit
up to 31. December 2011 120 g/km
from 01. January 2012 110 g/km
from 01. January 2014 95 g/km

Even if a further cost component was added to the vehicle tax due to the integration of the CO2 fee, the overall burden is lower.

A different calculation applies to certain types of vehicles?

Motorcycles

In the case of a motorcycle, only the engine capacity is taken into account for the calculation. 1,84 euro per 25 ccm or part thereof will be charged. If a light motorcycle has a displacement of less than 125 cc with an output of less than 11 kW, no vehicle tax is payable at all.

motorhomes

When calculating the motor vehicle tax for motor homes, only the permissible total weight and the special S pollutant class are taken into account.

TRUCK

If a truck has a maximum permissible gross weight of 3.5 t, then the taxation is based on the kilograms. For every 200 kg or part thereof, a certain amount will be charged. For all trucks with a permissible total weight of more than 3.5 t, a fee for emissions and driving noise is charged in addition to the basic fee per 200 kg.

Trailer

For trailers, the calculation is also based on the permissible total weight. per 200 kg or part thereof 7,46 euro is calculated. However, vehicle owners of trailers must pay a maximum of 373 euro. In addition, only trailers that are subject to registration are taxed.

How is the vehicle tax paid?

From 2009 to 2014, the local tax office was responsible for collecting the motor vehicle tax. Currently, the customs administers the vehicle tax. Each vehicle owner can decide for himself whether he wants to pay the fee by bank transfer or have it collected by direct debit mandate.

The vehicle tax must be paid once a year in advance. If you register your vehicle in february, then the vehicle tax is due every year in february. If you have a seasonal registration for your vehicle, you only have to pay taxes for the months in which you actually use and register your vehicle.
