Cargo bike: compare utility bicycles or e-cargo bikes

cargo bikes

Find a cargo bike or e-bike that suits your needs and select individual models to compare.

A cargo bike is a great alternative to the bicycle trailer and bicycle seat for children. The cargo bike has the advantage that it can be used both for the transport of children and for the transport of other things, which is particularly useful in the city. Most cargo bike manufacturers now offer loads e-bikes or e-cargo bikes, so cargo bikes that are equipped with a motor and thus provide a pedal assist. More information on cargo bikes and the differences between the different variants can be found below on this page.

What is a cargo bike?

A cargo bike is a bicycle that is designed to handle loads such as a bicycle. Transport goods, children, dogs and the like can transport. It is usually a bicycle, in which a large transport box is mounted in front of the handlebar, in which the children or the load can find space. The cargo bike is especially popular in big cities, as it is a good alternative to the car. In many cities, the average traffic speed of 20-25 km / h is reached by car due to heavy traffic and congestion. In addition, there is no need to search for a parking space, which saves time in the case of several stopovers on a route, so a cargo bike can often be a full substitute for transport by car. In addition, it is flexible in use, much cheaper to buy and compatible with family life with children.

Cargo bikes are available either with or without assistive e-motor drive. The models with pedal assistance via an electric motor are referred to as e-cargo bicycles.

Cargo bike as a two- or three-wheel: This is how the variants differ

Cargo bikes for transporting children are available in two larger versions, namely models on 2 wheels and models on 3 wheels. The two variants differ not only in appearance and space requirements, but especially in the driving style.

Two-wheeled cargo bikes

For bicycles with two wheels, the wheels are arranged so that the rear wheel is at the back of the same place as a regular bike. The second wheel is mounted in front of the transport box. In terms of design, cargo bicycles with two wheels are often narrower than variants with three wheels. In a way, they are more like a normal bike, as you can get along pretty well with the bike and adapt quickly to changing traffic situations. In this design, the transport box is usually a little narrower than three-wheeled models. As a result, it is often not possible to accommodate more than two children in the transport box. Of course there are exceptions. The cargo bikes, where it is possible to transport more than two children with a two-wheeled model, can be found in our filter.

Three-wheeled cargo bikes

In the case of the three-wheeled models, the wheels are arranged so that there is a rear wheel at the rear, as in a normal bicycle, and at the front one wheel on each side of the transport box. The three-wheeled model is due to this construction very stable on the ground and in contrast to the agile handling of the two-wheeled variants, it goes with a three-wheeled model rather comfortable and relaxed. The three-wheeled cargo bike is not quite as manoeuvrable as the two-wheeled model and it takes up more space in traffic because of its wider width. This should be considered when buying, especially if you are going to be on narrow bike paths a lot. A great advantage of the three-wheeled cargo bike is that the cargo bike stays stable when it is parked or when you have to wait at an intersection. This makes it much easier to start up and makes it easy to move around this design even without special prior knowledge and practice. Due to the larger width, it often offers more storage space than its two-wheeled counterparts. Depending on the model, up to four children can be comfortably accommodated in the transport box.

It is therefore primarily a matter of taste, whether one decides on a two-wheeled or three-wheeled cargo bike. It is important that the cargo bike meets the requirements that are placed on the bike. With a little practice and after a short settling-in period, you usually get along well with both variants.

Equipment and functions

Depending on the manufacturer and model, there are a variety of equipment variants and functions in the cargo bikes. However, all wheels have one thing in common: all models have a transport box in which the children can be transported.

Transportbox

The transport box is in front of the driver, so in front of the handlebars. In this way you have a good overview of the traffic while driving and can communicate well with the children at the same time. For some manufacturers, the transport box is made of wood, others made of plastic. The choice of material is completely different depending on the model. For all models, however, the children are transported in the transport box either in the child seat or on a seat belted.

Often, the transport box with a few simple steps in a pure storage area for cargo such. To rebuild the purchase, so that you can use the cargo bike well even if you just do not have to take children.

Infants and newborns

You can start early with babies and babies in the cargo bike to take. Here, however, it is important to secure the child properly and sufficiently. Many cargo bikes offer the possibility to carry an infant carrier, which is either clicked firmly into the cargo bike via Isofix brackets or is strapped in by a special strap. It should be noted that you should avoid uneven roads and cobblestones with small babies if possible to protect the head and back of the little ones.

Some manufacturers also offer their own baby bowls, which are suitable for the transport of infants from 2-3 months. These are often designed so that they can be installed directly into the transport box without additional accessories without giving away space unnecessarily.

Seat, child seat and seat cushion

Often in the transport box one or more benches are installed on which the children can sit strapped. Depending on the manufacturer and model, children are usually strapped down with either a 3-point harness or a lap belt. On many models it is possible to configure the accessories for the transport box according to individual needs. So it is e.g. it is possible to buy extra baby bowls with or without headrest for babies. For toddlers who are not yet stable enough to sit alone or who need a bit of support in the back when shaken, there are child seats. In addition, it is often possible to install a second seat and upgrade it with a soft, shock-absorbing seat cushion. Thus, the transport box with the appropriate accessories can be tailored to your own individual needs.

Rain and sun protection as well as other accessories

As a further accessory, there is a rain and / or sunscreen to buy in just about any model. Often, a small scaffolding is mounted on the transport box, over which the covers are stretched. As a driver, you can continue to look good over it and the children can comfortably sit up underneath without banging their heads up. In addition, there are other accessories, such as Rain cover tarpaulins pulled tight over the transport box when not in use. So you avoid that it runs full of water. A protective cover for the parked cargo bike is also often offered. This is especially useful if there is no suitable place in the house where the wheel can be turned off and this therefore often has to be parked outdoors.

Cargo bike – with or without motor drive?

A cargo bike is not least because of the transport box heavier than a regular bike. And when it’s loaded with kids and weekend shopping, it takes a certain amount of fitness to scale the next hill without getting out of breath. That is why motorized cargo bikes are becoming increasingly popular. These are called e-cargo bikes.

E-cargo bicycles are approved despite their motorization according to road traffic regulations as a normal bicycle. The engine must not apply more than 250 W of power for this purpose, and the speed achieved with the aid of the pedal support of the engine must not exceed 25 km / h. With the e-cargo bike, the motor drive works as a pedal assist. This means that you have to constantly pedal like on a normal bike to get ahead. The engine then additionally pushes the cargo bike along and thus makes it easier to move forward, especially when heavy loads have to be transported and / or when hilly routes have to be negotiated. Some e-cargo bikes also have a traction help that you can operate to get the cargo bike from a stand in motion.

If you rely on a cargo bike every day, transport heavy cargoes and drive a lot uphill, you will appreciate the advantages of the e-bike.

engine

Each e-bike has a pedal assist, which is powered by a built-in electric motor. Depending on the model, the engines of the various e-cargo bicycles have different specifications and scope of performance. Some engines assist the driver of a cargo bike by selecting a level from different levels of assistance. In other engines, there is a force sensor that automatically doses the force used to assist pedaling. For all variants, they can push up to a maximum speed of 25 km / h and thus make driving considerably easier. The engine is powered by a built-in battery and can be switched off when not in use. Then the e-cargo bike can be driven without support, just like a conventional cargo bike without e-drive. Almost all manufacturers offer e-cargo bikes. Most also offer the option of retrofitting ordinary cargo bikes with a battery and a motor. It is also possible to have a conventional cargo bike retrofitted by an external service provider with a motor and battery. However, it is important to clarify in advance with the manufacturer, whether the warranty expires by retooling the cargo bike.

Battery and range

Each e-bike has a battery, which drives the motor. The built-in battery is usually under the luggage rack or under a seat in the transport box. For charging, the battery is either removed from the cargo bike and can then be easily charged with a charger or the charger can be connected directly while the battery is still attached to the cargo bike.

The battery life of the manufacturers usually expressed in range in kilometers, say, how many kilometers an e-cargo bike with a full battery charge can cover. It is important to note that these are always guideline values. For those who travel with a fully loaded e-cargo bike in a hilly area, comes with a single charge of course not as far as someone who drives with a barely loaded bike, which is correspondingly lighter, on a flat, paved road.

The e-cargo bike as a replacement for the car?

Especially in big cities, where many people are dependent on getting quickly and often from A to B, where children have to be taken to the kindergarten or kindergarten before work, and where purchases and other payloads have to be transported over relatively short distances, wins the e-cargo bike in particular to popularity. The heavy traffic in the cities is not only very annoying, also the lack of parking places in big cities leads to the e-cargo bike to develop into a real alternative to the car. In many situations, you can even reach your destination faster with the e-cargo bike than with the car, which is often stuck in a traffic jam during peak hours. Another argument for an e-cargo bike is the lower cost. Although an e-bike in the purchase in comparison to a normal bike is not exactly cheap comes (from about 2,000 euros have to be invested), it is still considerably cheaper to purchase and maintain than a car. The investment is especially worthwhile if the e-bike does not make the purchase of your own car unnecessary.

Cargo bike or bike trailer – which variant should I choose?

Although both cargo bikes and bicycle trailers are suitable for transporting children, it is difficult to compare these two products. The reason for this is that the two variants satisfy very different needs. However, there are a few parameters that can be used to try to compare the two types of transport.

Age of the children

In a bicycle trailer children may only be transported up to a maximum age of 7 years. Thereafter, it is not allowed to transport the child in a bicycle trailer. This restriction does not exist with a cargo bike. Here even adults may be transported.

Space and payload

Depending on the model, a bicycle trailer can carry a maximum of one or two children. The bicycle trailer, if it is no longer needed to transport children, can be used as a transport trailer for purchases and other goods. In a cargo bike, depending on the model, up to 4 children can be taken in the transport box at the same time. This is especially relevant when more often friends of the little ones from the kindergarten should be taken or if you have more than two children. The cargo bicycle, like the bicycle trailer, can be used as a means of transport for purchases and the like.

Whether the cargo bike or the bicycle trailer is the better option is very difficult to answer. The preferences for one or the other product depend on many factors. In the cargo bike you have e.g. Even while driving a good overview of the children as they sit in front of you. The bicycle trailer with the children, however, is attached to the rear of the bike. Here is the communication with the children, especially in traffic noise in the city, only very limited possible. But the handling of a bicycle with a bicycle trailer is much more similar to normal cycling than the handling of a cargo bike.

A cargo bike can be used over a longer period of time, as there are no age restrictions like the bike trailer. For this one can uncouple and turn off the bicycle trailer flexibly, e.g. at the kindergarten, so that one parent can bring in the morning and pick up the other in the afternoon and use the same bicycle trailer.

In an e-cargo bike with battery and electric motor, however, there are a number of advantages over the bicycle trailer. The e-cargo bike rides fast and flexible, even as the kids get bigger and heavier. There are still the advantages of a traditional cargo bike, such as the good visibility and the good communication possibilities with the children during the journey. And for many parents, the e-cargo bike is actually a full replacement on short and medium distances in the city, as you get along well with the pedal support and manageable effort despite full load in everyday life.

What to look for when buying a cargo bike

To find the right cargo bike, you first have to be aware of your own needs. Therefore, you should ask yourself a few questions before you buy to find out what features you need and what comfort you want. Here are some important questions:

  • How many children would like to transport in my cargo bike?
  • I already know from the beginning whether I would like to drive a two-wheeled or a three-wheeled model?
  • For how much payload in kilograms the transport box must be approved?
  • Up to what weight in kilograms the saddle may be loadable?
  • Is the extra charge for an e-bike for me and my typical everyday situations justified?
  • I have certain requirements for the capacity of the battery, that is, the range of the cargo bike in kilometers?
  • Is it important to me that the cargo bike has a specific type of gearshift or type of brake (for example, derailleur, hub gear, roller brake, disc brake, etc.)??
  • Should the transport box be made of a specific material and have a specific color?
  • Is there a particular accessory that is indispensable to me?

In our filter you can choose exactly the parameters that are important to you. The filter then shows exactly the cargo bikes that fit your needs and wishes. Simply scroll back up until you can see the filter function.

ask & reply

Is it difficult to drive a cargo bike??

A cargo bike, of course, runs differently than a conventional bicycle. But you get used to the unfamiliar driving behavior relatively quickly. Whether you prefer a two- or three-wheeled model depends on your personal preference. It will be unusual at the beginning to maneuver the unusually large cargo bike over roads and paths. At the latest after a few days, it should be a lot easier, until one day you do not even notice that you are traveling on a cargo bike.

Do I need a cargo bike with electric motor?

That can not be answered so flatly. Rather, one should consider what advantages an e-cargo bike brings and whether this justifies the additional costs. If you e.g. Knowing in advance that you will carry many children or heavy loads, daily relies on the cargo bike or maybe lives in a hilly area, then the e-cargo bike will certainly give great pleasure. The same is true for long distances that need to be overcome on a regular basis.

How much is a cargo bike??

The prices for cargo bikes are very different depending on the model. Basically you can say that it starts at about 1,500 EUR for a conventional cargo bike. But for a high-quality e-cargo bike you can also invest up to 4,500 euros.

Is it safe to transport children in a cargo bike??

As long as you follow the traffic rules, considerate and careful drives, quite yes. The children are strapped into the cargo bike and should also wear a helmet. In this way, they are protected in the event of an accident as well as possible.

lexicon

Each e-bike has a battery, which drives the motor. The battery is charged via a charger and depending on the model has a battery life, which is usually described in range in kilometers. Depending on the running time, the e-bike can be operated for a certain distance in kilometers. The battery is usually under the luggage rack or under a seat in the transport box. It is important to note that a battery in winter cold weather is not broken and of course can be operated in winter. However, performance may be limited at low temperatures. This means that the range can be shorter on cold days. In order not to strain the battery unnecessarily, you should take it with you into the house in winter if possible and only charge it here.

Baby Seat

Even small babies can be transported in a cargo bike. However, for this it is necessary to buy and install a special baby cup holder. This can then be a baby seat, e.g. a Maxi-Cosi, attach in the cargo bike and transport the baby safely in this way. It is important to note that the infant carrier occupies much more space in the transport box and often the entire space on a bench seat. Therefore, you may not be able to transport the maximum number of children specified by the manufacturer in the cargo bike when a baby carrier is installed.

loading

lighting

A lighting on the cargo bike is in most cases standard equipment. But even if this should not be included in the delivery, it must be ensured that there is sufficient lighting. This is not only required by law, but also serves the safety of the driver and passengers. Depending on the model, the lighting is either powered by a classic dynamo, by batteries or directly via the battery of the e-bike.

brakes

Depending on the model of the cargo bike, different braking systems are encountered. Further information on the different brake systems can be found here: Roller brakes Drum brakes Disc brakes

theft protection

As with a normal bike, you should always take care of having a bike lock so that you can safely park and lock the cargo bike. Some cargo bikes have a built-in function that allows the transport box to be connected to the bike. Cargo bikes are unfortunately very popular with bicycle thieves. Therefore, you should definitely pay attention to a sufficient anti-theft device.

own weight

A cargo bike is obviously a lot heavier than a regular bike, because the cargo bike is considerably longer and includes a spacious transport box in which the children sit. The weight is additionally increased by the load, if e.g. Children ride or the purchase is transported. If the weight of a cargo bike is too high, the e-bike is an interesting alternative. Here, the mass of the vehicle less important, as an electric motor acts as a pedal support. In this way, you can move quickly with a heavy, fully loaded wheel with relatively little use of force.

E-trike

An e-cargo bike is the name given to a cargo bike that is designed to carry children, dogs or goods in transit. It also has a rechargeable battery and motor for pedaling to make it easier to ride a cargo bike. The cyclist must always come along. However, the e-cargo bike supports its own pedaling motion (see pedal assistance).

gear shift

Depending on the model, there are different systems. For more information, see derailleur and hub gearshift.

harness

All cargo bikes are equipped with a belt system to fasten the child in the seat. These are usually a 3-point harness or a lap belt that holds the child safely on the seat. The fastenings on the seat ensure that the child can not fall out of the seat and thus of the cargo bike in the event of a fall.

There is no helmet requirement for cyclists in Germany. The same applies to cargo bikes. However, it is strongly recommended to wear a helmet when driving, especially children who are traveling. In this way, everyone is best protected in case of an accident or fall. Also for e-load bicycles with an engine power up to max. 250 watts, there is no helmet requirement. Of course, the above recommendation also applies to all electric bike riders and riders.

derailleur

The derailleur is one of the most commonly used gears on the bike and now also on the cargo bike. The gear change takes place in a chain shift step by step. This means that all gears on one side have to be switched through to reach a certain gear. The reason for this is that the chain has to change from one chainring to the next when switching. In contrast to a hub gearshift must be stepped on during the gear shift when changing gears, so that the chain can change the chainring and thus the translation. However, you should make sure that the gear changes only at low load on the chain is done (when driving downhill roll briefly and kick easily, so that the chain can easily switch from one sheet to another). In general, a derailleur consists of a front and a rear set chainrings, which are controlled by a left and a right lever. So I often left on the handlebars a 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear and right, for example. 8 gears, giving a total of 24 gears. If I switch the first gear on the left and on the right, I have the easiest gear for uphill cycling. If I turn the 3rd and 8th gears on the left, I have the heaviest gear for downhill cycling. In between, I have much more gradations than, for example, in a 5-speed hub gear, although I can not make sense all combinations, because the chain is too crooked for some combinations. The advantages of a derailleur are that you do not have to remember to refrain from stepping on the gear change that you can continue driving uphill in the gear change that the open design facilitates cleaning and repair of the shift and engine that you can turn the pedals in the backward state Without having to raise the rear wheel, which makes it easier to level the pedals before starting The disadvantages of derailleurs are the lack of coaster brake the open design, which can sometimes lead to dirty legs that you can not switch in the state. So you have to, for example, Before stopping at a traffic light, think about which gear you want to drive to and then switch off before stopping

cargobike

Cargo bike is the name given to a bicycle designed to carry children, dogs or cargo. This is the front of the bike, so in front of the driver, a transport box.

steering damper

The steering damper is a construction that prevents the handlebar from knocking out sideways undesirably or surprisingly. This means in practice that, in a bicycle having a steering damper, the front wheel can not swing away sideways, e.g. when the wheel is turned off or the wheel gets into an unstable driving condition at high speed. Especially with a cargo bike, a steering damper is very useful because it stabilizes the wheel especially when starting. In addition, steering is made easier overall. Due to the high weight of a loaded cargo bike, the front wheel or the front wheels may tend to swing out. The steering damper ensures that the handling remains stable in such a situation.

engine

Each e-cargo bike has a pedal assist by a built-in motor. Depending on the model, the engines of the different e-cargo bicycles have different specifications and different performance. Some engines support the driver by selecting a level from several levels of assistance. In other engines, there is a force sensor, which automatically meters the power input of the pedal assist.

hub

In contrast to the derailleur, the chain plays no role in the hub gear. As with the derailleur, the gear change takes place step by step with this type of shift. If you prefer a coaster brake, you rely on a hub gear, since only this type of gear allows a coaster brake. A particular advantage of the hub gear is that you can change the gear even when the wheel is stationary. So you do not have to pre-plan here and already choose the correct starting gear, while rolling towards a red traffic light. The NuVinci hub gear works on the same principle as the regular hub gear. However, it is possible here to steplessly switch, which makes the bike can run smoother and more comfortable.

passenger weight

Each cargo bike has a maximum permissible weight capacity with which the transport box can be loaded. It does not matter how much the individual children weigh. It always depends on the total weight of the load. You should always try to distribute the load in the transport box as evenly as possible so that the bike stands safely and stably on the road.

rain Cover

With the cargo bikes, it is possible to buy a rain cover as an accessory. This is attached to corner poles on the transport box and allows the children to sit upright in the transport box while remaining dry in the rain.

reach

An e-cargo bike has a battery that can be charged at home. On the way, the battery provides the energy for the built-in engine that helps the driver pedal while riding the cargo bike. Each battery has a certain capacity, which is usually expressed in range in kilometers. This means that most cargo bikes can travel for at least 40 km on a full battery charge before it has to be recharged. It is important to note that the range of a battery at low temperatures may decrease. In addition, a battery is a wearing part. He loses some of his capacity over time and may need to be replaced after a few years.

roller brakes

The roller brake is installed like the classic coaster brake in the hub. However, it is operated like rim brakes with handles on the handlebars via a cable. The braking effect is created by rollers, which press on a cam ring when braking outward into a drum, which is then braked together with the entire wheel. The advantages of the roller brake are that it is virtually maintenance-free (it must be greased very rarely over a designated opening) that it is protected from weather influences that the rims or other components are not worn, such. in rim brakes, where the brake pads act on the rim. that the brake works even if the chain is broken (an advantage over the coaster brake) that the pedals can run backwards, e.g. to put the pedals for starting in a level position (an advantage over the coaster brake) Disadvantages of the roller brake are: the relatively high weight the fact that the braking effect, even if the effect of fat decreases, can be very sharp normal bicycles have ever led to heavy falls over the front wheel. Roller brakes are partially installed with cooling disks, which should dissipate the heat occurring in the hub on the long slopes to the outside, to avoid a decrease in the braking effect.

disc brakes

In a disc brake, the braking effect is not generated on the rim or on the hub, but it is a brake disc mounted on the hub, which is then intervened by various pad braking systems. Advantages of the disc brake are: very powerful braking system rims or other components are not worn, but the wear of the discs is accepted relatively low weight Better braking effect in wet conditions as rim brakes Disadvantages of the disc brake: a slightly increased risk of conditions in which the braking effect can (fading, ie reduction of the braking effect due to overheating, glazing of the brake pads by braking too long, which is why jerky strong and not easy for long periods should be slowed) Lower braking effect in wet conditions as roller brakes / drum brakes Higher maintenance in the form of wear on the grinding Sharing and Occasional Adjustment / Adjustment Requirements Due to the one-sided, compact mounting of the brake disc, a higher load of the wheel on the hub and spokes

seat height

The seat height of a cargo bike indicates how big the distance from the bottom of the transport box or from the top of the seat to the rain or sun canopy. This value can be an indicator of how long the children will have space in the cargo bike.

sun protection

As with the rain canopy, most cargo bicycles designed to carry children have the option of installing a sun canopy to protect the little passengers from the sun’s rays. As a rule, the soft top is attached to the same frame as the rain cover. For some manufacturers, the rain cover acts both as a sun and as a rain cover. The sunscreen is definitely a useful addition to the cargo bike, especially if you regularly take longer distances in attack.

storage space

Cargo bikes have a large transport box in which the children to be transported have enough space. On some models, it is possible to fold down the seat (s), which may result in stowage of cargo such as purchases and the like. facilitated. However, it is important to note that in many cases the transport box can not be covered without additional accessories (such as a tarpaulin). The cargo is then loose in the transport box and may jump when driving over rough terrain under certain circumstances from the cargo bike.

Transportbox

The transport box is the heart of a cargo bike. Here the children are strapped and transported. Depending on the model, the transport box may be a box made of wood, steel or plastic. Most models have integrated benches on which the children can be strapped. If you have opted for an e-cargo bike and knows that you want to stow in addition to the children still further cargo, such. shopping, then you should definitely pay attention to where the battery of e-cargo bike is installed. This is namely stowed under many models under the seat and thus takes up a lot of space in the transport box.

pedal assistance

The pedal support says in an e-cargo bike with battery and engine, with which help the cargo bike can be pushed. When pedaling, the engine can help with different force to push the cargo bike. There are either different levels of assistance that can be set manually, or the engine has a built-in force sensor that automatically adjusts how much power to apply in addition to the driver’s power. The pedal assist is on most cargo bikes from a speed of max. 25 km / h regulated.

drum brakes

A drum brake is a brake built into the hub of the wheel. It generates its braking effect by braking pads are pressed outward into a drum, which is braked together with the hub and wheel. Unlike the roller brake, the drum brake is not grease lubricated, as the braking surfaces must be kept dry and therefore more prone to water penetration. It is now offered and installed only by a few manufacturers. The advantages of the drum brake are: Relatively low maintenance Weather-independent operation, as installed in the hub The disadvantages of the drum brake are: Relatively high weight At long brake episodes, e.g. in long descents, by the closed design a special risk of overheating with concomitant decrease in braking force (fading) When running as a coaster brake, the same disadvantages as the coaster brake (see here roller brake and disc brake)

payload

Each cargo bike has a maximum weight capacity with which the transport box can be loaded and loaded. Unlike bicycle trailers, there is no maximum passenger weight per child in cargo bikes, but there is a total maximum load per transport box.
