St. Lucia is characterized by green and picturesque landscapes, beautiful beaches and the year-round tropical climate. This makes Santa Lucia an island that is also a dream holiday destination in winter. Hidden bays, paradisiacal atmosphere and sea as far as the eye can see – this is what the Lesser Antilles is all about. If that’s what you’re looking for, then this island is for you!
St. Lucia – The Garden of Eden under the Lesser Antilles
Arrival – Your way to St. Lucia
Hewanorra International Airport is, as the name suggests, the island’s international airport. It is located north of the city of Vieux Fort, in the south. From Frankfurt airport, a weekly direct flight of 9.5 hours is possible, and there are of course numerous flights with a change. Otherwise, the island can be travelled via the cruise traffic or during an island hopping.
For all those who want to travel across the regions, there are several possibilities on site: If you decide to rent a car, I advise you to get an off-road vehicle because of the bumpy ground. You should be aware that there is left-hand traffic on Saint Lucia. In addition, driving a car is only allowed with a local or international driving license. But you can get it at the airport upon presentation of your German driving license. The fees for this are currently about 19€.
Another attractive way to explore the island is to rent a taxi. You can recognize them by the TX in the blue number plate. It is important for you to know that fixed prices apply here, so the taxis do not have taximeters. A trip from the international airport in the south to Rodney Bay in the north costs 68€ on average for up to three persons. In order to avoid nasty surprises, it is better to ask the driver about the prices before starting the journey. A travel guide is available on top, as the taxi drivers themselves know best what is on offer in Santa Lucia. A booking by the hour or by the day is also possible.
By the way, the best travel time is the dry season from December to April, where you can expect great weather and warm temperatures all year round. But in other months it can be a bit muggier, because the humidity is higher.

On Saint Lucia there is something for every type of travel. From the accommodation in luxury hotels up to comfortable private accommodations in the small villages of the island, everything is possible. I have picked out some really dreamlike destinations for you.
Luxury in Gros Islet
Treat yourselves to pure luxury! Rent a villa in Gros Islet, in the south of Saint Lucia. The exclusive Akasha Cap Estate offers exclusive design, a home cinema, a Jacuzzi and four bedrooms, each with its own sea view balcony. The villa can accommodate 8 people and at €2,320 per night the price is luxurious.
Beach house in paradise
Accommodation Coconut: Paradise on a Budget delivers what it promises. Located directly on Marigot Bay on the west coast of the island, you can book a private room for 83€ per night. The private pool is the perfect backdrop for the Caribbean sunset.
A villa by the sea
The next place to stay takes us to the very north of St. Lucia, to Vieux-Fort. There Villa Pierre awaits you with a breathtaking view over the sea. It is regarded as one of the top accommodations on St. Lucia. The villa can accommodate up to six people and can be rented for 325€ per night.
The most beautiful beaches of St. Lucia
There is hardly an island in the Caribbean with such a variety of beaches as Santa Lucia. From palm-fringed sandy beaches to small enchanted bays with rainforest at the back of the neck to thundering sprays on the east coast – on St. Lucia everyone will find their dream beach!
Marigot Bay
The old Hollywood charm of the 1950s has not been lost in the bay, which is extremely popular with sailors. Marigot Bay reflects a dreamlike idyll: a small beach overgrown with palm trees that extends far into the bay is nestled in green hills and lined with mangroves on the west coast of St. Lucia.
Reduit Beach
The white sand of Reduit Beach stretches north of the island, along Rodney Bay to Pidgeon Island. Only the artificial marina at Gros Islet interrupts the sand. By the way, this is one of the most exclusive anchorages of the Caribbean.
Choc Bay
If you are an avid water sports enthusiast, Choc Bay is the beach for you. The Cas en Bas in the northeast is also ideal for windsurfers thanks to the constant trade winds.
Anse Louvet
Anse Louvet beach can only be reached by land on foot. A special highlight at Anse Louvet: between March and August you can watch turtles laying their eggs.
I’ve got two little tips for you on the beaches: Watch out for all divers among you! There are nine diving centers on the island, the best diving and snorkeling spots are in the southwest of St. Lucia. Most of the reefs are under nature protection. There you can do a “Superman’s Flight”, flying like Superman over an underground mountain range. In Castries, Rodney Bay and Soufrière you can take water taxis along the coast to the beaches.
Places of interest on Saint Lucia
Volcano cone – the landmark of the island
The two volcanic cones Petit and Gros Piton, thus big and small volcano, form the landmark of Saint Lucia. Majestically, they rise at the southwest coast barely 800 meters steeply from the sea. The surrounding nature reserve was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
Pigeon Island National Park
The area of the Pigeon Island National Park on the north coast has already experienced a lot: First it was the home of the Indians, then it served as a pirate hideout until it finally became a military base. Today it is a popular destination for picnics and marriages. Music lovers watch out! Pigeon Island is also the main venue for the annual Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival, which takes place in May. At the most popular music event in the Caribbean, both national and international jazz, RnB, soul, reggae and pop greats are honoured.
The colorful Diamond Waterfalls
The Diamond Waterfalls are located in the botanical gardens on the west coast of the island. They draw their water from underground sulphur springs, which gives you a special natural spectacle: the water shimmers in yellow, violet and green tones! Near Diamond Falls you can bathe in 17th century mineral baths.
La Sikwi Sugar Mill
It’s the mix that does it! African, French, English and Indian – for all gourmets among you, a meal in this restaurant should definitely be on the to-do list. The La Sikwi Sugar Mill offers a buffet with local specialities. Lobster and seafood dishes, germou, a vegetarian pumpkin and garlic soup and chicken dudon, a crispy chicken in coconut sauce, are typical of St Lucia. You must try the delicious fried fish banana balls. Absolute danger of addiction!
