Caries treatment: how dentists remove caries

CARIES TREATMENT: HOW TO REMOVE DENTAL CARIES

Caries, also called tooth decay, never heals itself as soon as a hole is created. Therefore, it is necessary to see a dentist. During the visit, the dentist decides which caries treatment is appropriate given the stage of the disease.

The general rule: The older the hole in the tooth, the longer your tooth has been attacked and the greater the intervention by the dentist. It is better to take care of it as early as possible to maintain dental health. You can find out more about the course and the individual stages of caries under Caries Symptoms.

STAGES 1 AND 2: SIMPLE CARIES

If the tooth decay only affects the enamel and dentin, filling therapy is usually recommended. A hole is drilled with a special drill and the carious tissue is removed. Then it is replaced by different filling material.

WHICH FILLINGS ARE THERE?

  • Dental amalgam: The classic tooth filling is still up to date. It is silver-colored, contains silver and mercury and hardens within a few hours after application.
  • composite: Composites are fillings made of plastic and reproduce the natural tooth color. They harden immediately.
  • Layered composites: Correspond to the simple composite filling and are used for larger holes.
  • Inlays and onlays are made with a dental impression made of ceramic or metal and are more expensive than amalgams and composites.

Whatever technique the dentist suggests, the aim of caries treatment is to stop it from spreading and ensure a good seal to prevent caries from recurring.

STAGE 3: DEEP DENTAL CARIES

If the caries attacks the pulp (the pulp), where the blood vessels and nerves of the tooth are located, this usually leads to very severe pain. Root canal treatment is often required at this stage. The dentist must remove the tooth nerve and then disinfect the root canal before filling it up. The tooth is devitalized.

STAGE 4: TOOTH ABSORPTION

If an abscess forms at the tooth root, this leads to very severe pain. As a last resort, the dentist has to remove the entire tooth and replace it with dentures, for example a dental implant.

Tips:

Even if your dentist has treated your hole in the tooth, an infection may reappear after a few years! Bacteria can also accumulate under a filling. The caries then spreads further and creates pain. If a tooth that has already been treated hurts, do not hesitate: see your dentist immediately!

If your tooth is devitalized, you will not feel the pain. Even so, the infection could be serious. Your dentist can detect the infection during your annual check-up.
