Locator prosthesis

A locator prosthesis is a combination of fixed and removable dentures to provide a complete edentulous jaw. As a rule, a locator prosthesis with four implants per jaw is attached. Each implant contains a so-called locator. This construction element has at the upper end a flat male part, which fits exactly into the counterpart in the removable denture, the female part. Both fasteners fit together to provide a strong and stable connection, similar to a button on clothes or bags. The titanium locators are easy to care for and offer a defined hold for the actual plastic locator prosthesis.

Cost of a locator prosthesis

The price for a locator prosthesis consists of the dental fee and the material and laboratory costs. Since the implants used are not individually supplied with individually produced dental prostheses (crowns, bridges) but with a prefabricated structure (locator), the costs are lower. In addition, there are the costs for the preparation of the prosthesis.

How long does a locator prosthesis last??

In general, dental implants can last a lifetime, with actual lifetimes depending on many factors. In addition to the quality of the implantation and the implants themselves, the patient also plays a decisive role. For a good and thorough oral hygiene and regular check-ups extend the life, while about smoking or alcohol consumption can affect the durability of the implants. At least, however, a shelf life in the range of 5 to 15 years is assumed, wherein the rubber inserts on the locators should be replaced and renewed every 1 to 2 years by the dentist.

Stegprothese or Locatorprothese?

A bridge prosthesis represents a comparable restoration. Again, implants are inserted into the jaw and then connected with bars. This bar construction is firmly gripped by corresponding recesses on the back of the prosthesis and thus ensures a secure hold of the prosthesis in the mouth. The provision of a bridge prosthesis is comparatively more expensive and also has the disadvantage that the dentures can be cleaned worse. Oral hygiene is a bit more difficult in comparison. However, a Locatorprothese requires a more intensive follow-up by the dentist. Therefore, a check-up is required at least once a year, during which the dentist closely examines the condition of the locators, the prosthesis and the jaw.

Treatment procedure for a locator prosthesis

At the beginning there is a thorough examination by the dentist, also with the help of X-rays or computed tomography, in order to be able to assess the quality and density of the jawbone. Thereafter, the required implants are placed under local anesthesia in the jawbone. Depending on the initial findings, a bone structure is also performed in parallel in order to enable firm healing of the implants. As a rule, the healing period lasts 4 to 6 months. During this time, the patient is provided with a long-term temporary restoration that ensures chewing and speech function.

If the implants are firmly established, the locators can be used in a second treatment step. This is followed by an impression of the jaw, which is sent to the dental laboratory. There, the prosthesis is made based on the individual situation of the patient. Later, it is used by the dentist in practice.
