There is an opportunity for parents to continue receiving child benefit if the child is unemployed and registered as a job seeker with the Federal Employment Agency. In this case, the child’s 21st birthday is the upper limit for receiving child benefit. Parents can receive child benefit even longer if their children are studying or training. If your adult child is completing an apprenticeship or study, parents even receive child benefit up to the child’s 25th birthday. According to the new legal situation, the amount of income is no longer important. However, the child’s weekly working hours do not yet play a role in initial studies or initial training.

Children do not always find a training or study place directly. However, it is a prerequisite that the children also make serious efforts to get an apprenticeship or study place, otherwise the family fund may cancel the child benefit payment. Another way to get child benefit for an adult is for parents if the child goes into a voluntary social year. In this case, too, the child’s 25th birthday is the upper limit for child benefit.
