In mid-October 2017, the ADAC checked 17 current child seats for their safety and other factors such as handling and pollutants in the usual cooperation with the Stiftung Warentest, the Swiss and Austrian Automobile Club. We have included the results here and marked them with a double star (**) in the respective category. Our top recommendations for each child seat group are currently unaffected by this. We expect new recommendations for 2019.

The child seat advisor – our recommendations from group 1 (toddlers from 1 to 4 years or 9 to 18 kg body weight)

In group 1 our choice for the current top recommendation falls on the Maxi-Cosi AxissFix Plus. If it may be models from the previous year, we can also very safely give you the test reports Kiddy Phoenixfix 3 recommend. It is just as convincing Cybex Sirona M-2 i-Size, who did not show any nakedness in the test judgment. All of the child car seats presented in this group were included in all categories "Good" rated. The two 2016 seats even have a slight advantage in terms of pollution. Since the recommendation is easy.

The best child seats group 2/3

The child seat consultant – our recommendations from group 2/3 (children from approx. 4 to 12 years or from 15 to 36 kg body weight)

We recommend one of the following three seats to the somewhat larger offspring. The current recommendation of a 2017 child car seat, in which you can transport your child properly until the end of the child seat obligation, is Cybex Solution M-Fix. The safe and recommended restraint systems from Britax Römer and Maxi-Cosi are also a good choice. The one that was already tested in 2015 Britax Römer Kidfix SL, was able to convince the experts from ADAC and TCS with and without SICT (an additional side impact protection) and received purchase recommendations. The Maxi-Cosi Rodifix Airprotect with Isofix fastening is another good and safe alternative in this group (by the way: this is identical to the Bébé Confort Rodifix Airprotect).

The best child seats group 1/2/3

The child seat adviser – our recommendations from group 1/2/3 (toddlers and children from around 1 year or 9 kg body weight)

Are you looking for one, like so many other parents "growing child seat"? A seat that accompanies you and your child for almost the entire child seat requirement? The ADAC advises to use at least two other seats over the 12 years in addition to a baby seat. However, many parents resort to seats like that (for convenience, because of the cost) Cybex Pallas M-Fix, which overall perform slightly worse than specialized candidates. Ultimately, these also ensure protection and a high level of security. Just like the one presented here Joie Transcend, according to the TCS test judgment "highly recommended" rated. Finally, a real bestseller: the Britax Römer Evolva 1-2-3. This can only perform satisfactorily in terms of safety, nonetheless many very satisfied buyers swear by this child car seat and in most cases give the Britax Römer Evolva 1-2-3 top marks. Only in a few cases were the buyers not satisfied. For example, the processing of one seat was inadequate, whereupon the manufacturer Britax Römer offered to exchange it free of charge.

Information about child seats and child safety devices

Do you want to learn more about child car seats? Everything you need to know about the topic can be found here:

Basic information on child safety

Since 1993, Section 21 (1a) of the Road Traffic Regulations stipulates that children up to the age of 12, who are smaller than 150 cm, may only ride in motor vehicles if they are secured by officially approved restraint systems. In this case, officially approved means that the child seat has an orange test seal with test standard ECE R 44/03 or ECE R 44/04 – meanwhile, only child car seats with the 04 version of the seal should be offered in stores.

Older child seats, whose test number begins with 01 or 02, for example, no longer meet current safety standards. The use of these seats is no longer permitted since 2008 and we strongly advise against using them. If a child is nevertheless transported in a motor vehicle in this way, accident safety is not guaranteed and there is a risk of fines of 60 euros (70 euros for several children) and 1 point in the driving aptitude register (FAER). If rear-facing baby car seats are used despite the airbag being activated, a fine of EUR 25 is payable.

Why are child seats important?

A good car seat or baby seat to protect your child in an accident can be life-saving. For example, keep in mind that a collision at 30 km / h on a body already has forces equivalent to 10 times its own weight. An adult can usually no longer hold a baby on his lap. At a speed of 50 km / h it is already 25 times your body weight – in the event of a frontal accident, serious injuries, if not worse, are the result if you are not secured.

Since the introduction of child safety seats in Germany, very good results have been proven in accident statistics. Of course, not only restraint systems alone are responsible for the high decline in injured children and increased child safety. General safety-related improvements to vehicles (example: airbags) also contribute to better protection of the occupants. Furthermore, child car seats have also developed steadily over the years (previously, many models were without side impact protection).

Nonetheless, a decline of 85 percent in child accidents with fatalities in road traffic alone can be shown statistically. In 1990 there were 560 children killed – 25 years later the number was reduced to 84. In seriously injured children there was a decline of over 65 percent (1995: 13,047 to 4,253 in 2015) and in slightly injured children still 37 percent (37,979 to 23,898).

Which child seat do I take for my child??

The European Union has, according to ECE Regulation No. 44, child car seats in four different norm groups assigned. So it is divided into:

  • "Universal“(Approved for use in all vehicles, possible in most positions, fastening with an adult belt)
  • "Limited“(Special sitting position, fastening via car belt)
  • "Semi-Universal“(Use only in cars with Isofix fastening)
  • "Special vehicle"

Restraint devices are also differentiated according to body weight. According to the standard, there are the following four weight classes:

  • Class 0+: less than 13 kg (newborn)
  • class 1: 9 to 18 kg
  • 2nd grade: 15 to 25 kg
  • Class 3: 22 to 36 kg

Which child seat groups are there?

The manufacturers also grouped the classes listed above into child seat groups. These can be congruent with the class. In addition, the companies also offer multi-weight child car seats (the so-called "growing child car seat") that include two to three weight groups.

Group 0/0 + (0 to 13 kg)

In the 0/0 + group, strictly speaking, there are no child car seats, but so-called baby seats. Suitable for newborns and babies up to approx. 18 months, these baby car seats are mounted in the car facing backwards (against the direction of travel). This gives your baby a higher level of protection and a lower risk of injury, since the impact on the spine from the shell is minimized in a frontal accident.

It is recommended that babies be carried in rearward-facing baby car seats for as long as possible and only change to the next group when the child’s head reaches the edge of the seat pan. IMPORTANT: If the front passenger airbag is activated, these child car seats must be attached to the back seat of the vehicle.

Group 0/1 (0 to 18 kg)

Until your child weighs around 18 kg or is about 4 years old, they can use a group 0/1 seat. Newborns and babies can be transported safely and properly in this group’s seats for several years.

Group 1 (9 to 18 kg)

Group 1 restraint systems are suitable for children aged 9 months to approximately 4 years. Regardless of the weight and age of your child, you should only switch to a toddler seat when your head looks out over the backrest of the baby seat.

Group 2/3 (15 to 36 kg)

If your child is between three and four years old, you should switch to a group 2 and 3 restraint system. By the way: there are no child car seats "just" Group 2, all models grow with the age of up to the age of twelve or up to a height of 150 cm by adapting the seat to the body size.

Group 1/2/3 (9 to 36 kg)

You will find the best price-performance ratio for child car seats in groups 1/2/3. These can be used from the 9th month until the end of compulsory child seats at the age of 12. Due to the long use, these are naturally very attractive in terms of price. Many parents prefer to choose good car seats from this group if a child can no longer be transported backwards in a baby seat. However, depending on the child seat test, these do not cut slightly worse than a specialized one "grows with" Seat off. For example, if you choose the ADAC test winner in this group, criteria such as safety and reliability have been tested and you can easily follow this recommendation and buy the child seat.

More security through i-Size

In 2013, the division of child seats was adopted according to ECE Regulation No. 129. The standard, now recognized in 60 countries, no longer divides child car seats by weight, but – more practically – according to the child’s height. In order to be approved, these seats, unlike the previous directive, must pass a side impact test. An Isofix attachment is usually required, but some models now have belt attachments.

The new regulation will take place in three phases:

  • Phase 1 (since 2013): New standardization of integral Isofix child seats (previous weight classes 0, 0+ and I)
  • Phase 2 (since June 2017): approval standard UN R129-02, new standardization of non-integral child car seats (previous weight classes II and III)
  • Phase 3 (beginning of autumn 2018): New standardization of integral child car seats for fastening using the vehicle’s own seat belt

Regulation No. 129 (like R129-02) does not replace the previous No. 44, but only supplements it. Approved child seats remain usable without any problems.

Graphic overview of child seat groups

To alleviate the confusion, you can see the whole thing a little easier here:

Which child seat group do I take and at what age?

What types of attachment are there for child car seats?

Isofix

The Isofix attachment is considered a particularly secure holding system for baby seats and child seats. Due to the easy handling, you can hardly make any mistakes in operation. Wrong belt guidance – one of the most common causes of injuries in road traffic – is thus excluded.

Isofix is already preinstalled on newer car models. Two small brackets are used, to which the child seat can be attached quickly, easily and correctly. This rigidly connects the body and seat and there is nothing standing in the way of a safe transport of your baby. Some models even give you feedback via acoustic / optical signals as to whether you have fastened everything correctly.

The disadvantages of Isofix should not be overlooked: the corresponding restraint devices are usually more expensive than models without Isofix attachment. In addition, not every vehicle has this bracket or the corresponding approval. You can check whether your (older) vehicle is equipped with Isofix here (source: accident research from insurers), or alternatively check the website of the respective child seat manufacturer. It should also be mentioned that this type of bracket usually only allows two child seats to be attached to the back seat. If you want to let another child ride with you, you have to rely on booster seats for space reasons.

belt attachment

Installation using the belt installed in the car offers greater flexibility, but requires more time and care to prevent incorrect operation. Many parents do not properly attach the seat belt to the child car seat. For example, the seat belt is twisted slightly or not attached tight enough, which affects safety in the event of a crash.

The belt attachment using the vehicle belt is available in different versions (2-point, 3-point and 5-point).

Top tether and low tether

A special form of belt attachment is the so-called Top Tether belt (next to it as Low-Tether mounting possible). The child car seat / Isofix base is not connected via the seat belt that is permanently installed in the vehicle, but – in addition to the Isofix attachment – a so-called top tether belt is used. This is stretched over the car seat or the seat back and fixed with a hook to a separate bracket (on the vehicle floor or on the rear seat). Low-tether belt systems are mainly used for rear-facing child car seats and shells and are tensioned towards the vehicle floor.

fixing base

You should be able to easily install a mounting base in any car. These are usually available both as a belt solution or as a connection via the Isofix attachment. Once the mounting base has been installed, you simply have to connect your child seat to the base using the click system. Incorrect operation is almost impossible, which in turn promises increased security.

What additional equipment is there for child seats?

Adjustable headrest

With an adjustable headrest, you can flexibly adjust the seat to the size of your child and thus allow the seat to grow with you and use over a longer period of time.

Side impact protection

Some seats offer better impact protection in the event of an accident from the side thanks to additional, padded side bolsters (example: the SICT version of the Britax Römer Kidfix SL). This ensures greater all-round protection for your child. Statistically speaking, every fourth accident happens from the side, but is usually more dangerous than a rear-end collision. Restraint systems with side impact protection are therefore always preferable to a variant without side impact protection.

Sun canopy / rain cover

An optionally attachable hood for sun protection provides relief from strong sunlight or annoying rain when transported outside the vehicle.

Finally to be mentioned.

Finding a safe child seat is very important. If you save at the wrong end, you take unnecessarily high risks and endanger the lives of those who need the most protection. We hope the child seats test 2018 can present you with a few good restraint systems that are easy to use, tested for safety, and have achieved a positive test result for pollutant testing.

However, tests and recommendations are one thing, but whether your child likes to drive in the seat may be quite another thing. Be sure to try out the allegedly new car seat and check whether your child likes it and sits well in it. Your child will not care whether the ADAC test winner meets the criteria of safety and low pollutant content. His judgment will rather affect comfortable sitting and good space.

Have fun and have a good trip with your new child seat
