All day or by the hour, publicly or privately, in the daycare or at home – there are many options for childcare in Munich. Which one suits you and your child?
Day care centers
In a child daycare facility, also known as a daycare center, trained personnel look after children groups during the opening hours. Depending on the age of the children, the daycare is called differently: a crèche looks after toddlers up to the third Age. Then comes the kindergarten. Finally, elementary school children can visit a day care center. In Munich there is with the House for children also a kindergarten form, in which different ages are looked after together. There are many different daycare providers in Munich. The most important are:
- State capital Munich:
The city is the largest provider of childcare for families in Munich. Kindergarten places are free here, the fees for crèche and after-school care depend on the booking time and income. Pedagogically, the city focuses on diversity, inclusion and participation.
- Workers’ Welfare:
The AWO runs crèches, kindergartens, after-school care centers and houses for children in Munich. It also offers midday care in primary schools. Many institutions are funded by the City of Munich and thus offer the same fee regulations as municipal day care centers.
- Church sponsors:
The Catholic Caritasis responsible for a whole range of daycare centers in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. For the Evangelical Church, among other things, the Youth welfare Upper Bavaria, the Inner Mission Munich and the Diakonie Hasenbergl as a daycare provider.
- Parent-child encourage initiatives:
Parents can also open a daycare center themselves. To this end, they join together in a non-profit association, a so-called parent-child initiative (EKI). An EKI can also receive financial support from the city. So it is often possible to keep the visitor’s fees low.

- Child Day Care:
A childminder looks after up to five children in their own household, for at least ten hours a week. The youth welfare office of the city of Munich provides financial support for day care for children and helps to find qualified day care workers.
- Great day care:
In a day care center, two to three day parents join together to look after up to ten children. For this, they rent suitable premises. Like day care in families, day care is also supported by the city.
- Nanny:
A nanny, also called a nanny, works for the family at home. Sometimes, in addition to childcare, small household tasks are also part of the tasks. A nanny is hired and paid privately.
- AU Pair:
As an au pair, young adults from abroad take on the tasks of a nanny for a certain period of time. You live and work with your host family for meals, accommodation and pocket money. Au pairs require a contract with the host family, a residence permit from the Immigration Service and in a lot of Apply for a visa.
- Baby-sitter:
Babysitters come into the family and look after children by the hour, for example for an evening. Babiesitters are often young people from family or friends. There are also professional agencies that provide qualified babysitters.
