Children’s clinic on the bult

With more than 40,000 young patients cared for each year, the children’s hospital "Auf der Bult" is one of the most important medical care facilities in northern Germany. In order to keep up with the high demands in the future, the entire ward of the children’s hospital was extensively renovated from 2015 to 2017.

What applies to adults also applies especially to children: we feel at home and in a lovingly designed environment can Recover faster. The children’s hospital “Auf der Bult” in Hanover has also taken this fact to heart. Together with architects, color designers and lighting planners, a joint master plan was created, from which patients and staff alike benefit.
Scientific studies have shown that light has a direct influence on the psyche and the body and thus on the potential of our health. This makes careful use of light in the health sector essential. The present lighting concept is based on extensive studies of the biological rhythm and other non-visual effects of light on humans.
The most important instrument of the present lighting planning is the conscious control of light color and illuminance both in patient rooms and in work rooms. This is where the knowledge of circadian rhythm is applied and supports patients and employees with artificial light control that is based on the dynamic course of daylight (Human Centric Light). The control of the respective rooms is derived from the master plan previously created with the customer and is tailored to the needs of people depending on the room requirements.

By increasing the light intensity and light color, an activation takes place in the patient room until midday. In the evening, these two parameters are lowered and the patient is thus prepared for the evening and bedtime. Optional and switchable examination lights as well as a color-adjusted orientation light guarantee an undisturbed night’s sleep for the patient.
The workrooms are also equipped with an HCL-effective lamp. Here, the focus is on the staff, whose workstations enhance the light and are accompanied by day and night scenarios. Night work and the associated circadian phase shift are thus supported and the willingness to perform is increased.
The lounge can be used as a patient room if required and is therefore also equipped with biologically effective lighting. In addition, round luminous ceilings are installed, the activation of which via buttons shows the desired animation. This enables the users of this room to directly influence the function of this lamp. Direct intervention in the world of experience of the patient and visitor has a positive effect on the mental image of the hospital and the reduction of fear of thresholds.

The lighting concept described for the children’s hospital "Auf der Bult" is the first Plant throughout Germany in which the principles of circadian rhythm were implemented across the board. It is an exemplary project in which a coordinated and future-oriented concept emerged through interdisciplinary cooperation that focuses on people with their emotional and biological concerns.
