  • Children need flat, soft pillows in the first months and years. These pads do not bend the head and do not bend the spine.
  • The cover and filling materials decide whether the pillow is flat, high, hard or soft. The material plays an important role, especially for allergy sufferers. But there are also special mite-tight duvets for people with allergies to house dust.
  • It is particularly important for items that are in daily contact with your children that they have been tested for harmful substances. Many children’s pillows have been tested according to the Oeko-Tex Standard 100.

Many parents experience the following every evening: The child steals the pillow so that it can sleep in the parents’ bed. Then, at the latest, it is time for the offspring to have their own pillow in the cot. According to statistics from the Federal Center for Health Education, the length of sleep for children decreases over the years. An infant between zero and three months sleeps the longest with an average of 17 hours a day. Children aged three years and older still need 12 hours of sleep.

When buying a children’s pillow, there are a few things to consider for parents. For example, the height of the pillow and the filling material are important criteria. If the wrong choice is made, the child can wake up with a tense neck or, in the worst case, form a deformity. To prevent this, we have compiled the most important information for you in our 2019/2020 pillow comparison.

1. Why do the little ones need a special pillow?

A pillow for toddlers should be as flat and soft as possible.

Anyone who spends 11-17 hours a day in bed naturally needs a good pillow. Since children not only dream and learn while they sleep, but also grow, good upholstery is an important basis. The pillow has an important role in bed, to support the neck and thus the cervical vertebrae and to keep them in the correct position. The spine should form a straight line when lying down in children and adults.

Not only the growth of the children is promoted during sleep, but also the knowledge. Your child will practice the whole day, the conscious and unconscious, again at night. This way, the little ones learn to walk, speak and swim in their sleep. The learning process can be interrupted by the wrong pillow, because the child cannot sleep well due to the lack of comfort.

Children emulate their parents and are happy when they finally get their own real pillow.

For these reasons it is important that your child has the correct pillow in the cot early on. Together with the mattress the spine is supported and nothing stands in the way of growth. The learning process can also be supported by the correctly selected pillow – your child has no problems falling asleep and does not wake up because of an uncomfortable position.

Although the topic of “child’s upholstery” is especially great for parents important is, the Stiftung Warentest has not yet carried out a child pillow test. We hope that through our purchase advice you will find the best child pillow for your child’s needs.

Some pillows also have an “organic” label. With down pillows, this indicates that no animals had to suffer for the manufacture of this cushion. Cotton can also come from organic farming. This means the reference was produced ecologically and sustainably. Plastics such as polyester, microfibre or viscose foam cannot receive an “organic” label because they are manufactured artificially.

Manufacturers like Sigikid, which specialize in children’s accessories, mostly offer upholstery that is also suitable as a cuddly pillow. Badenia, Centa Star or Zollner, on the other hand, are devoted to general sleeping comfort and, in addition to children’s pillows, also offer mattresses, for example. The Zöllner brand has concentrated on all baby equipment and sells baby pillows, among other things.

2. The condition of the pillow depends on the sleeping position

Not only the children, but also their cuddly toys must have enough space in bed.

The pillows of children’s upholstery rarely differ in size. There are other formats for many models to buy, but a children’s pillow should not be larger than 60 x 40 cm. A pillow of 80 x 80 cm or 40 x 80 cm is more suitable for children with a real bed. These pillows do not fit into a cot. Before your child starts their own child pillow test, you can read in our guide which type of cushion is suitable for your offspring.

2.1. Flat pillow: a must for belly sleepers

On flat pillow is particularly suitable for babies or belly sleepers. The baby pillow must not be too high, otherwise the child’s spine would be bent. This could result in misalignment of the spine. Children who like to sleep on their stomach put a strain on their cervical vertebrae from the side of the head. If the head were additionally bent due to the height, the neck tenses and the spine is bent. Flat pillows for children are no higher than 5 cm.

2.2. Higher pillow: Particularly good for side or back sleepers

The little ones can sleep anywhere without a cushion. However, this is not good for the spine.

This type of pillow can be between 7 and 10 cm high and is suitable for small children from 5 years. Due to the height of the cushion, it particularly supports side and back sleepers. For side sleepers, it is important that the area between the shoulder and neck is filled with the pillow so that the head is held up.

Back sleepers also need a pillow that supports the neck. That is why neck pillows are often used for this sleeping position. However, these neck pillows are often too firm for children and the head does not sink into the pillow and is kinked. A taller pillow of 10 cm, which is relatively bulging, is suitable for children who sleep on their backs.

2.3. Hard pillow: for toddlers from 4 years

The hard pillow should sink under the weight of the head and support the spine.

The more plump the pillow is filled, the harder it is. The material of the viscose foam is very firm and high. That makes them more likely suitable for small children from 4 years. The weight of the head should press into this ergonomic pillow so that the material gives way a little.

A baby pillow shouldn’t make this requirement because that little brains is not yet heavy enough to impress this material.

Some pillows for children offer the possibility, to regulate the filling. If the pillow is too bulky or too flat for toddlers, you can quickly change this condition. These pillow fillings are available from many manufacturers and brands. However, make sure that the filling type is always the same. Different fillings for pillows can otherwise be distributed unevenly in the upholstery or form clumps, which means that there is no longer any comfort.

Viscoelastic gel foam pillows are often thought of as orthopedic pillows. People with back problems should feel relief from the spine and relief from their pain through these pads.

2.4. Soft pillow: Suitable for every type of sleeper

Children not only grow in their sleep, but also learn movements such as cycling or swimming.

Most of the models from our children’s head cushion comparison are in the "soft pillow" category. Due to the elasticity, these pillows can be pressed together well. This is not only due to the filling quantity, but also to the filling material. Polyester and down are rather soft materials that are also used in sleeping pillows for babies. This soft material means that even a small, light head can lie comfortably and stably on the pillow.

For children who like to sleep on their stomach, but sometimes turn to the side, a soft pad is recommended. Your child can squeeze the pillow so that the head and spine are optimally supported in other positions.

Which A flat and soft pillow has advantages and disadvantages versus a hard and higher one?

  • also suitable for babies and toddlers
  • good for belly sleepers
  • can be squeezed
  • little material cannot slip quickly
  • not suitable as a back cushion for reading
  • unsuitable for back sleepers
  • not good for children with back problems

3. Purchase criteria for children’s pillows: you have to pay attention to this

Before you buy a supposed child pillow comparison winner, you should consider the needs of your child. Depending on your age and preferred sleeping position, there are some criteria, to watch out for before the cushion ends up in bed. The following categories are also examined in various child pillow tests.

3.1. Cover and fill material

Children’s bedding in a set

Once you have decided on a pillow, your child usually needs a new duvet so that the care is uniform. It is advisable to buy a set that includes the blanket and pillows. Bedding sets for babies in particular are an important part of the basic equipment for parents.

Most pillows are covered with a child pillow case at home. It is still important to know which material the pillow case supplied is made of, because the combination of filling material and cover can, for example, store heat very well. If your child sweats quickly while sleeping, a cover made of microfiber or polyester is recommended, as these materials dry quickly and are particularly breathable.

A Pillow filling made of polyester ensures that it is soft and malleable. Your child can squeeze it as they please without the pillow losing its shape. Down and hollow fibers are warm and soft. Such filling materials are good for babies and toddlers, because these pillows can give way under the heads.

3.2. machine washable

Sweat, tears, vomit – a pillow has to endure a lot. If you buy a child pillow, make sure that it is washable. Viruses, bacteria and also house dust mites are removed by a wash cycle and your child can sleep in a clean bed again. From a wash of 60 ° C the pillows are really hygienically clean.

The pillows are cleaned from mites, however there are also special bed linen and covers for allergy sufferers. These mite-tight covers are designed to keep the 0.1 mm animals away and make it easier for allergy sufferers to sleep.

3.3. Tests for harmful substances

Children’s pillows and mattresses not only have to endure sleep, but also extensive pillow fights.

Especially when it comes to your child, you should pay close attention to most items in your daily life Life are free of pollutants. Not only toys, but also children’s pillows are tested for pollutants by various institutes. These textiles are well below the limit for certain harmful substances.

The standard for pollutant testing for textiles is the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX. Various companies and institutes orientate themselves on the criteria that have been set up for this. The more skin contact the product has, the stricter the tests. Textiles that have been awarded this seal have been checked for the following:

  1. Prohibited chemicals: Azo colorants, formaldehyde, pentachlorophenol and heavy metals (cadmium, nickel, lead) are prohibited in the processing of textiles.
  2. Permitted chemicals: Non-hazardous chemicals are also used in textile processing. However, these must not be dosed too high, otherwise they will develop pollutants.
  3. Chemicals that have not yet been recorded: Substances of concern may not contain hazardous chemicals. Some substances hazardous to health are known, but have not yet been registered by law and have been banned in textile production.
  4. Health care: The pH of the textiles is checked for neutrality (pH 7). In addition, the fabrics must be colourfast.

Further seals with which textiles are awarded say nothing about the pollutant test. The blue angel, for example, stands for an award in the area of environment and credibility. So make sure that the manufacturer states that the pillow has been tested for harmful substances.

4. Filling materials and their properties

Cuddly pillows and children’s blankets are stuffed with different filling materials. Children’s bedding is also changed frequently with the seasons: in winter it is often filled with down to keep you warm, and in summer with polyester so that the child does not sweat. We show you the properties of these materials in the following table.

filling material characteristics
down feathers

  • soft and cozy
  • should be loosened up regularly
  • the looser the pillow and the better the preparation, the more better the thermal insulation
  • not suitable for heavily sweating children, as down pillows hold the moisture well
polyester

  • light and soft
  • depending on the quality of workmanship, the pillow has good moisture regulation
  • more suitable for allergy sufferers
  • material in the pillow does not slip due to stitching
  • If the quality is poor, material can form lumps
Viscoelastic gel foam

  • solid material that adapts to the shape of the head
  • breathable
  • supports the neck and spine (often as a neck support pillow)
  • can be too hard for babies and toddlers
  • well suited for children with back problems
Note: On some models, you can adjust the filling quantity with a zipper. If the pillow is too bulky, you can remove some material. If the pillow is too flat for your child, you can order the appropriate filling material from some manufacturers and then fill up the cushion.

5. Questions and answers about children’s pillows

5.1. From what age does a child need a child pillow?

The nursing pillow is often used by babies as a place to sleep after meals, but your child should have its own pillow after a few months. This would only be a very flat cushion, but could increase sleeping comfort. At the latest, however, with your own cot, your child will also need its own pillow. Children’s pillows are available with a lot of decoration, in animal form or with the child’s name. Which upholstery you choose primarily depends on your child’s sleeping positions and material preferences.

5.2. Which filling is suitable for a child pillow?

Not only cushions for toddlers like to be made themselves, but also hats and socks.

While many blankets or baby blankets are made of cotton, this is not a common filling material for pillows. Depending on which sleeping position your child prefers, the cushion should be flatter, softer, harder or higher. For belly sleepers and babies, we recommend flat and soft pillows. Harder and higher pillows are more for toddlers who like to sleep on their side or on their back.

5.3. Which child pillow is suitable for the car?

Many children fall asleep while driving. It is not really easy to sleep while sitting, but the little ones don’t care. A child’s pillow is not enough to make it a little more comfortable for your child. A pillow is best suited to prevent the head from kinking. A small neck pillow or a slightly thicker, soft pillow is recommended. These cushions can be clamped between the head and child seat or window, and provide a little more comfort.

5.4. You can sew a children’s pillow yourself?

A cheap child pillow is available from 6 euros, but it makes more sense if you sew such a pillow yourself – be it as a gift or because your child wants it. Even a children’s decorative pillow or a pillow case can be made quickly with a little practice. The following video shows you how to sew a pillow. But always remember how flat, high, soft or hard the recipient likes their upholstery.
