gymnastics

Device gymnastics (also artistic gymnastics or device gymnastics) is an Olympic individual sport. The aim is to carry out exercises on gymnastic equipment according to predetermined criteria (technique and posture) in different connections.

Gymnastics is originally derived from the word "tournament", which was the expression for sporting debate in the Middle Ages.

Gymnastics means: versatile movement in the sense of the variety of physical exercises. It includes diverse forms of movement and play as well as gymnastics and sometimes also dance. Gymnastics and recreational sports are often equated. For the German Gymnastics Association, gymnastics is the generic term for the sports and exercise activities it represents.

Device gymnastics is the standard-guided movement on gymnastic equipment, for the execution of which there are technical and evaluation criteria. The gymnastics is characterized as a sport by the use of the large equipment: high bar, parallel bars, pommel horse, ring gymnastics, floor, uneven bars, balance beam and the jumping equipment (goat, box, horse, diving table). A distinction is made between sports gymnastics geared towards general sports, in which competition plays no or only a minor role, and equipment gymnastics geared towards competitive sports, which until recently was also referred to as artistic gymnastics by the German Gymnastics Association.
