Which animals live in Greece?

The Greeks are not animal lovers, but of course live in Greece, the classic Pets like cat, dog, donkey or sheep. But many animals live abandoned on the street, such as the numerous Greek cats, which can sometimes be a plague, because they also occur in restaurants in droves. Often they are chased away, which impresses most but little. They’ll just come back, maybe a snack will fall off the table?

Reptiles can be found in Greece numerous lizards. A particularly beautiful example is the Green lizard. There are also frogs and turtles. Dragonflies and butterflies like to accompany hikers on their forays through the woods. A very important insect in Greece are the bees. Many bees are bred and honey is an important source of income.

Living in the hot and stony regions of Greece scorpions. But they mostly hide and sting only when they feel threatened. A sting is unpleasant and in the worst case dangerous for an allergic person.

Although some snake species live in Greece, snakes are also very shy animals. Anyone who is on the move with good footwear and firmly, scares the animals in time and hardly anyone will encounter. However, there is a snake that should really be avoided and that is the one sand Viper, which is actually poisonous.

And in the sea?

One would assume that a rich sea life spreads on the many Greek coasts. But unfortunately this is not true or it is not true anymore. Especially the fish stocks have declined. This is partly due to the overfishing, because large fishing fleets have simply pulled far too many fish out of the sea. Almost nothing remains for the Greek fishermen.

In addition comes the water heating, which makes it difficult for some species of fish. So many fish are now bred in Greece or imported from abroad. But who in Greece’s waters you might get to see is the dolphin.
