Christmas story for school children

High up in the sky, well hidden in a sea of clouds, once lived a little angel named Gabriel. He was very young and didn’t know as much as all the big angels up in heaven. Therefore, he studied diligently in heaven school to be able to take on the important but difficult task as a guardian angel one day. Whenever the grown-ups left to work as guardian angels, Gabriel had to stay in heaven and was not allowed to go to earth. He was often annoyed about it, but Ariel, one of the big ones, always said the same thing to him, namely: "Learn to fly first, then we’ll see."

Flying was such a thing. His wings were just small too, and not as strong yet. He practiced every day, but he quickly got tired. When Ariel saw this, it said: “You see, Gabriel, if you are already tired, you can never make the long way from earth to heaven. We would be so missing if you were no longer there. Have a little patience, you will become a real guardian angel soon enough! ”

Even if Gabriel always nodded well, it made him deeply sad. He didn’t want to wait! He found waiting awfully stupid.

One day, school was long over, but the angels weren’t home yet, he sat very close to the edge of a cloud and looked down at the earth. "Pah! It’s not that far! ”, He said to himself and slipped a little closer to the edge to see more. Admittedly, it went down pretty well, but everything looked so nice down there! He saw everything glitter and sparkle in the moonlight and wondered why everything was sprinkled with sugar. He leaned a little further forward when a gust of wind suddenly blew him upside down from the cloud. First he held on and dangled at the top of the cloud for a while, but then he just let go.

A little trip like that wouldn’t be too bad, he told himself, not thinking about how to get back. The wind whistled past him and the earth came closer, he put the wings on as he had always seen the big ones, so that he slowed down. It had always looked so easy with the others, but he realized that he was still far too fast. Not at all elegant, he plopped into a pile of granulated sugar and cried out in alarm, because the sugar was scarce! He was cold and wet and Gabriel was trembling, after all he had hardly anything on, as was customary with angels.

Shivering, he crawled away from the pile and stood on the cold street with bare feet. He walked down the street that was dark and as dead. Suddenly he felt lonely and wished he was back in heaven. He almost started to cry when he saw a house that made him curious. It was almost completely dark in it, only a flickering light came from a window.
He crept quietly on his toes through the front yard and peered through the window. What he saw in there was so beautiful that he held his breath.

A tree grew in the middle of the room, which was decorated with burning candles. In addition, large, shiny pebbles and glitter threads hung from the branches. Because he wanted to see everything exactly, he went closer and nudged the window with his little nose. He saw real people for the first time. A woman, that must have been a mother, as he had learned in the angel school, was sitting on the floor with a little curly head on her lap. There was also a tall man with his arms wrapped around two older children on the left and right. Gabriel was curious to see what was happening. He heard them sing songs and wanted to sit with them and stay with them. Singing was one of his favorite school subjects and he also knew the lyrics from each of their songs!

Suddenly a lot of the cold sugar, which was scarce, flew from the sky. A little bit of it flew right on Gabriel’s nose and tickled him so much that he had to sneeze loudly. Then it became very quiet in the living room. Gabriel quickly looked around for a hiding place, but his legs were so frozen that he could only walk very slowly. He hadn’t found any real hiding place when a door opened and the mother came out, followed by the older children and the father who carried the little one in his arms. Rigid with terror, he stared at them and they stared back.

"Oh dear!" Cried the mother and came up to him. "You must be completely frozen!"
When she was only a few steps away from him, she suddenly stopped and Gabriel knew why. In the middle of this white flurry, she hadn’t seen his little feathery white wings. Her eyes grew big and round and Gabriel didn’t know what to do. The children approached curiously and they too stared at him.

"Are you an angel?" Asked the girl delightedly.
Gabriel nodded.
"Mommy, daddy, a real angel, can he stay with us?" She called out and hopped up and down on the spot.
"Do you want to come in and warm up?" Asked the mother kindly but also a little surprised.

Gabriel hesitated. You shouldn’t actually show yourself to people, he knew that, but it was really cold and he was so terribly cold. He nodded again uncertainly. He had already broken all the rules anyway, there would be trouble anyway.

When he was sitting in the living room with the others wrapped up in a couple of blankets, nobody really knew how to proceed. Since Gabriel was a little ashamed that he had messed everything up, he started to sing his favorite song about the child Jesus very quietly. The others enthusiastically joined in and sang together so many Christmas carols until they couldn’t think of any more. Gabriel was amazed at what happened to people at a real Christmas party. A stack of packages that he hadn’t even seen from the window were unpacked, people laughed and celebrated, ate and everyone was happy. They were all very kind to Gabriel and pestered him with questions just as he did them.

In the meantime he also knew what everyone was called, because Suzy, the girl, had introduced everyone to him. She was playing with her new doll, Henry, the smallest, was sitting in a pile of wrapping paper and was very happy to play with the crackling paper. Joshua and his father Sven were sitting in front of a strange device that glowed and that Gabriel knew absolutely nothing about. The mother, Eleonora, was in the kitchen.
Gabriel was the only one to notice that Henry was crawling toward the tree, toward the last lit candles.

"Stop!" He called out loudly, jumping off the couch in one sentence, flying towards Henry and preventing him from burning his fingers.
"Ohweia!" Sven called loudly and hurried to the two. "Fortunately you have such a good guardian angel, Henry!" He picked up the startled little boy and blew out all the candles as a precaution.

Late at night, when Gabriel had been sleeping on the couch for a long time, Ariel floated into the living room and gently took Gabriel asleep in his arms. Gabriel woke up anyway.
“Everything is good Gabriel. It will only be time to go home. ”
“Do I get bad trouble? Do I have to stay in heaven forever now? ”He asked sadly.
"No no. I saw how you protected little Henry and I know that you will soon be a really good guardian angel. ”, Ariel whispered softly and flew with him into the sky.
"Oh, yes," he murmured before falling asleep again.
