Computer games and children: set seasons

In principle, all types of computer games are only recommended on all devices from the age of four. If you want to know when and how long children should play computers, you can use the EU initiative klicksafe as a guide:

  • 4 to 6 years: 20 to 30 minutes a day (in the presence of the parents)
  • 7 to 10 years: 45 minutes a day (even without parents)
  • 11 to 13 years: approx. One hour a day (even without parents)

For older children, you can set a media budget per week, because it is precisely these that play more demanding games in which you can spend more than an hour in one session.

Note age markings

Above all, parents should also keep an eye on age restrictions and recommendations. At usk.de you can check whether the child’s current favorite game is approved for his age group. You can often find the age recommendation of the USK (entertainment software self-control) on the games. But this is not always the case, especially with online games. Parents can then take advantage of further advice such as the NRW game guide for guidance.

Parents should advise and support your child with regard to the transfer of data and the release of personal data and pictures. The following points are particularly relevant:

  • Limits the chat options or warns your child not to disclose any personal data in the chat
  • Checks when installing apps which permissions they require (access to camera, address book etc.) This is especially relevant for social games, which often ask players to share game successes and the like on the network.
