Cost comparison: water filter vs

Cost comparison: water filter vs. Mineral water

We used to buy mineral water in glass bottles. I remember regular trips to the beverage market and the tedious Schlepperei the approximately 17 kg water kettles. Since we have now switched to a water filter, I wanted to know more exactly what is actually cheaper. So I looked for some numbers and came to an impressive result. But let’s start from the beginning.

What is cheaper? The water filter or mineral water?

Based on a family of 4, I will calculate both variants. I calculate with 1.5 liters of water a day per person. For the whole family that’s 6 liters a day and a whopping 2190 liters a year.

Mineral water

A box of brand mineral water in glass bottles contains about 8.4 liters and costs about 5 €. Every year the family has to buy about 260 boxes of mineral water and pay about 1300 € for it. This may sound like a decent amount, but it can not be classified without a comparison.

How much does a water filter and the operation cost?

Of course, the tap water for the water filter also costs money and must be obtained from the responsible provider. Here I reckon with a total of 8 liters per day for the family, since in the morning first the stale water should drain from the water filter. There are 2,920 liters per year for the family. Our water supplier requires for 1000 liters of water including the sewage charges about 4.30 €. The annual tap water costs are therefore only about € 12.60. Of course, we must not forget the cost of the water filter in this bill. Our water filter costs in the Auftischvariante about 228 €. After 6 months, a new filter cartridge for about 49 € is due. In the first year total costs (filter + water) of about 277 € come together. In the following years, this sum is reduced to about 98 € per year, since only two filter cartridges are needed.

Conclusion – huge savings

The result amazed me a lot. Costs per year Mineral water about 1300 € and in comparison to that filtered water under 300 € in the first and under 100 € in the following years. That’s a savings of over € 1000 per year! Considering the additional fuel costs and the time required to procure the mineral water, the already significant difference is even more extreme. I do not regret that we switched to a water filter, because we save a lot of money every year.
